Probably the former. Regardless, I can only use it if I connect it via a hub and not just a USB adapter. That's annoying because the adapter is much more compact. I wish I could've found a drive that worked with USB-C to avoid an adapter. All of this notwithstanding, it'll help you out if you still have discs you need to access.
