My first one lasted for years. This is my second one and it's reasonably priced.

LG - 8x External USB Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive - Black is pretty good and very thin and light weight. Does the job. It says it can work as dvd player if you connect with your smart tv. I need to try that though I have 4k player. Just in case.

Simple and effective

No software required, not even included software. CDs must be ejected with laptop eject button, and that’s all you need to know. I am going to try to play a dvd on my Roku later…no doubt it will work fine.
