My first one lasted for years. This is my second one and it's reasonably priced.

No software required, not even included software. CDs must be ejected with laptop eject button, and that’s all you need to know. I am going to try to play a dvd on my Roku later…no doubt it will work fine.

Yeah, well there are some really old bits of media that I need to access still. Usually just to put on my backup hard drive. So, when my old one stopped working I had to get a new one. It works perfectly fine. I have no issues with it, although it does seem to be a bit glitchy with my definitely old version of Mac OS. But it works and I really like how compact it is. It makes accessing old DVDs and CDs a breeze. If it weren't for the hangups a couple of times (which did require me to turn off my computer), I'd give it 5 stars.
