What would you do if you found yourself orphaned, alone and in the middle of the ocean? Drown, surrender, pray? Now imagine you had company in the form of a dangerous predator. We join the story of Piscine Molitor Patel in adulthood. Piscine, known as Pi (played by Irfan Khan) is an Indian living in Canada. One day, a young novelist comes to his door after being referred by a friend of his. Named after a swimming pool by his parents, Piscine came by his nickname after exhaustive chiding of his given name by classmates in school. His father ran a local zoo and Pi took an intense, and as far as his father was concerned, unhealthy, interest in the zoo's sole tiger. Named Richard Parker as the result of a clerical error, the tiger is fed a live goat while Pi bears witness in an effort by his father to instill an appropriate amount of fear. Though raised as a Hindu, Pi (played as an adolescent by Ayush Tandon) discovers Christianity as the result of a dare from his older brother and, by sheer chance, discovers Islam sometime after. As an adult, he refers to himself as a Catholic Hindu. At 16, Pi's father decides to close the zoo, sell the animals and move the family to Canada. This is a crushing development in the life of our main character as he has just fallen in love for the first time. The family and the animals make their journey west on a Japanese freighter. Woken by a severe storm, Pi goes to the top deck to marvel at the magnitude of the waves, wind, and rain. It is that extremely questionable decision which lands him in a lifeboat while his family and the rest of the crew sink with the ship. All this would make his chances of survival slim enough, but for better or worse, he's not alone in the boat. With him is Richard Parker the tiger, an orangutan he refers to as Orange Juice a zebra and a hyena. This is an incredible movie. Some would say elements of the story are too fantastic to be believable but, with the first film in The Hobbit trilogy and the alleged final chapter in the Twilight saga currently in theaters, those objections seem hollow, to say the least. The struggle between man and beast and the eventual development of a symbiotic relationship between the two make for an extremely gripping tale. It's made even more so by the trials and tribulations they both encounter in their fight to survive. I thoroughly enjoyed Life of Pi, and wish I'd seen it sooner.

What a beautiful film Life of Pi is! The film starts off pretty slow, but eventually, it shines! The acting is perfect. The story is good. The cinematography is amazing thanks to Claudio Miranda! The CGI is truly amazing and watching this in 4K makes it even better! A lot of the scenes are just amazing to look it! I definitely recommend this!

First off this movie on Blu Ray was beautiful and I didn't think if could be improved. Then I picked up the UHD version of this movie and wow is there a difference. The colors and detail are outstanding. I'm seeing detail that I had missed on the HD version. My family even commented on how good the picture look in UHD. This is a reference disc to be sure and will show off any 4K TV with HDR.

Life of Pi is an example of fantastic interpretation of a wonderful work of fiction. Such a project can be very daunting to a production team, especially given the popularity of the book. But the story is indeed faithful to the book and only enhances Martel's message to readers. Visually, the film is a masterpiece to the highest degree. It was my first time watching a 3D Blu-ray at home and I must say, I was floored. The CGI is first-class and the depictions of wild animals are incredibly life-like. Having read the book, I'd say my only wish for the film would be that it was a bit longer. Pi and Richard Parker's experiences at sea were effectively presented, but I feel more time could have been taken to present their struggles and their developing relationship. The film does run 2 hours, so I'm sure there would be a hesitancy to lengthen it at all, which is understandable. Oh, and don't let the PG rating make you believe this to be a film appropriate for children. While some of the more gruesome imagery from the novel is tastefully limited in the film, the subject-matter is for adults. Kids might appreciate some of the beautiful imagery (especially in 3D), but the plot and deeper meaning behind the film will likely not be grasped by children under the age of 12-13.

Amazing movie with an even better 4k transfer, a must have for anyone wanting to show off a 4k TV.

Ang Lee's film "Life of Pi" is a technological marvel, perfectly blending 3D and state of the art digital effects with a great adventure story which is also remarkably spiritual. It all comes together for a deeply moving motion picture experience. The Blu-ray is stellar as well. The film features some of the best usage of 3D since James Cameron's "Avatar" and Martin Scorsese's "Hugo". It's perfectly replicated on this 3-disc collector's edition. This set also includes a standard 2D version of the film which also looks amazing. Audio is fully immersive and perfectly replicates the film's sonic power. The extras are spread over the 2D and 3D Blu-ray discs. These include deleted scenes, a detailed hour-long "making of" documentary, and additional features which explore the film's Oscar-winning visual effects. Also included in this version is a DVD copy of the film and digital copies (iTunes & Ultraviolet). For a limited time, this set even includes an $8 off coupon for other Fox titles and if you can find it, Best Buy has an exclusive version offering $10 towards the eBook for the novel upon which this movie was based. Overall, a great value and a great Blu-ray package!

This was a complete and total blind buy, and I am thoroughly impressed. I wasn't sure what to think of the film at first. I was worried that it would be a slow moving affair and would end up bogged down in religious sentiment. Fortunately, my worries didn't last long on either front. I ended up loving the film. It gets my vote for best of 2012 and is now one of my all time favorite films. The cinematography and visuals are amazing and the 3D stunning. It has to be seen to be believed. The ending will blow you away. The 3D version is definitely the version to get, even if you don't own any 3D equipment. There are special features present only on this 3D edition that are well worth the premium. And if you're not yet on the 3D bandwagon, this is the film to put you there.

In my opinion.... I love movies with great story line. I like the ones packed with action and not just action but unexpected action scenes. If I watch movies such as this, I then like the cleverness of how it was written and a bit of a twist to keep things interesting. Well, the good is that the guy who wrote the book from which this was taken from is a genius. How can someone think of things that may happen on a boat with a kid and a tiger... ? Needless to say, it's a clever movie with a pretty good story but it is not something I would be watching over and over. Maybe once in a few months. Another thing is that this movie has some religions attached to it - just thought I'd throw it out there too for other people who are particular with religion. I collect 3D movies but not just any kind. I want some good 3D effects like you! So as far as the 3D effect, it is not too terrible. There are a handful of parts where the images pop out pretty good but other than that I don't think it was actually utilized highly. It could have been better..

When some people I know heard that at the heart of of the stunningly visual, family-friendly, adventure-filled "Life of Pi" is a story that is essentially a meditation on faith, I witnessed them groan and not want to give it a chance. But the beauty of the film is that is let's you decide. It is not heavy-handed; it is an open book. That the Oscar-winning Director Ang Lee and his cast and crew were able to accomplish this while making it the visual masterpiece it is should be talked about for years to come. "Argo" may have taken home Best Picture for 2012, but "Life of Pi" is the type of film that can and will endure longer and appeal to a great range of people of all ages and all nationalities worldwide. Lee and Co. have truly made a globally important film here. The Blu-ray disc features reference quality picture and audio as well as a nice array of bonus features. And the 3D at home is tremendous!

This is perhaps the best movie I have seen in years. I rented it and then had to buy the 3D version because as I watched in 2D I thought some of the scenes would be amazing in 3D. I was not disappointed! The plot was excellent and the young first time actor, Suraj Sharma, was an amazing actor. Though there is a lot of philosophy and spirituality in the movie it does not offer answers to the great questions and leaves you to ponder that which is presented and the ability to draw your own conclusions. I thoroughly enjoyed the extras that came on the discs also. This is definitely an excellent addition to my DVD library and I am sure I will watch it again.

This Movie By Far Is One Of The Best inspirational Movies For Me. It Made Me laught, Cry and smile. It Has a great Message Of Faith And To Never Give Up A Must Watch!! You Won't Be Disappointed.

This review will focus on the merits of the Blu-ray presentation. Life of Pi's 3D quality is stunning to say the least. Do not expect any gimmicky pop-out shots, you will get outstanding depth and dimensionality. The DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 soundtrack is as stunning as the picture quality. Fully immersive and dynamic when needed. No problems whatsoever with center channel dialog. Special features are excellent. There are several featurettes including a full-length making-of documentary. Videophiles looking for material to demo their 3D home theater need look no further than this one.

I will leave the merits of the film to the real critics, although it is beautiful and deeply moving. What truly impressed me about this film was the masterful use of 3D. It was a nice combination of stunning depth and some good use of out of screen. Also, this is one of the first titles to have a selection of 3D bonus features. These features give a nice overview of the 3D process and there is even a selection of 3D deleted scenes which is believe is a 3D bluray first. This is a great showcase for your 3D television and a stunning film in general.

"Pi," in 3D, is a audio-visual feast for the senses. From beginning to end, the movie draws the viewer into a world of animals, nature, and drama. "Pi" was made for 3D media; filmed with that in mind. And the result is an Oscar-worthy work of art. And for those of whom are watching very carefully, the end of the story will leave you thinking deep thoughts. Which was the correct story? A mystery within a mystery. That's entertainment.

I own 12 of the new 4k UltraHD Blurays and this one was by far the most visually striking. HDR content was noticeable and I was able to experience minor details that I had not seen on a regular bluray.

Mom and I were just waiting for a Samsung rep to come back from lunch to get our new phones and decided to hang out in the Magnolia section of the store. There were some comfy seats in front of a large TV so we decided to rest....and then we became captivated by the movie on the screen. We ended up having to buy the movie and are not disappointed. It is even better on my not as huge but 3D TV. Just buy it - all of you regardless of age will love it!!

This is a beautiful movie to watch in 3D. The use of 3D is not gimmicky or trite, but rather keeps the viewer immersed in the "world" created by the film maker. It is a very different kind of story with a lot of depth (no pun intended) and is thought provoking. Even my wife liked it and stated that it was the best 3D film she had ever seen. That's saying something!

I saw Life of Pi in cinemas in 3D, and WOW! This is truly one of the most beautiful (visually and emotionally) movies of the year. Life of Pi almost equals The Hobbit in vivid, lush, gorgeous cinematography. The story is BETTER than the book, to say nothing of the acting, and CGI. This CGI is better than Avatar! WOW! That is all I can say - my mind is stunned by this film.

The visuals are absolutely amazing. Suraj Sharma as Pi is great and really makes you feel for the situation he's in. Not for the animal lover as it will make you cry. Cannot stress enough how spectacular the effects are. A must for 3D-TV owners!

This is one of the most beautiful films ever made imo. From the story to the jaw-dropping special effects, this movie has it all.
