That is necessary to keep the case waterproof while using the auxiliary port and to allow all third party headphones to be compatible with the case. The Apple headphones that came with your iPhone will work without the adapter but please keep in mind that the case will not be waterproof in this configuration. Dust and dirt should not be getting inside the FRE case. If this is happening we do apologize and we’ll be more than happy to get a new case heading your way through our warranty.
If the dirt and dust are on the outside of the case then it can easily be wiped clean with mild soap and water. We do not suggest using abrasive or corrosive cleaners that may damage the case. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to give us a call at 1-855-419-7418.

Changed cases and everything was great, so it wasn't the phone. No comment on the protection the case gives because he had it less than two weeks before he returned it.
