Customers are saying

Customers are delighted by the great protection and water resistance this case offers for their Samsung Galaxy S4 phones. Many appreciate the ease of use and lightweight design, while some find the fit to be excellent. However, negative feedback focuses on sound quality issues and difficulties with the charger port.

This keeps my middle schoolers' phone safe and sound. My only complaint is the earphone jack cover has broken off on both kids' covers within the first few weeks.

Great if you don't use your phone to call people

I've been using this case for almost a week. It looks great, and I'm sure it would do a great job protecting the phone from water, drops, and dust. The screen is pretty responsive through the screen protector, but the menu and back touch areas are tricky to hit because of the huge flange around the home button. However, the sound quality pushes this case into the "return it" category. People can't hear me very well when I use the phone normally, and voice search and commands don't work reliably. I tested using a voice recorder with and without the case, and the sound without the case is 3x as loud as with the case. Blowing on the mic membrane helps a tiny amount, but the fix doesn't last long. I'm really disappointed with this case, and I hope Bestbuy will accept the return.

    Not worth the money

So after 6 months the case has not held up to what I think a $80 case should. The adapter for the headphones is so rediculously difficult to remove, not only has the adapter broken, but the rubber plug for the port has broken off as well. You have to use a vigorous grip while removing the adaptor. Now dust gets inside the case, so I have to open the case and clean it, because it gets under the screen cover...leading to further cracking. My phone fell off my nightstand (2ft) and the case chipped at the seal....It's supposed to be rated for a 6ft fall. Overall the idea of the case is brilliant, it looks great, however I think Lifeproof is trying to slim down so much that its just not as durable as they advertise...and for $80....its just not worth it.

Pleasing to the eye, but don't be full!

The good part: The lifeproof case passed the water test. Lifeproof does have a 1 yr. waranty. The bad part: The plug broke off from the earphone jack. When I make a call, my voice sounds muffled. I tried blowing air with a duster though the mouth piece of the case, but it didn't help. Lifeproof customer service saids they had a bad bunch and to try another one. I took it back to Best Buy and tried another case in the store, but no luck. Don't waste your money on the Lifeproof Fre case for Samsung S4.

I love this case, but it does muffle the sound from the back, and people on the other end of the line cant hear me that well. But i have dropped it in a pool, the toilet, the sink, im not very cautious with my phone but with this case i can do anything with it. Love it, i just should of gotten it in the white...

This is an expensive case, and I am throwing it away after 4 months. While I was using the case, people complained they could not hear me talk on the phone. After a few weeks, the pieces covering the charging port and earphone port broke off. I tried to return the case, but I could not because it had been more than 30 days. I was offered a replacement, but I don't want another one.

As others have noted - audio (mic) quality is poor

I thought I would give this product a try. After all, many negative reviews don't turn out to be accurate. Sadly, the negatives for sound quality are quite accurate. I purchased a new fre case, performed a successful 30-minute water test and then tested the audio quality of the phone (via my home answering system) without, and then with the case. Without the case: hand-held, speakerphone with display facing up and speakerphone with display facing down were all acceptable. IN the case, the answering machine never even detected my speaking (loudly) into the handset mic. Speakerphone usage was a little degraded, but the mic used for hand-held mode essentially "heard" nothing. I tried blowing in both directions into the membrane port over the mic with the phone out of the case and had no luck. Customer Service at Lifeproof claimed complete surprise that their product had this problem and suggested I try another article. Did so, this time without getting the case wet at all - just an audio test that again failed miserably. I really did want this case to work, but as a hand-held phone user (as opposed to mostly bluetooth) this case was unusable - back it went. Now waiting for a "Seidio CSWSSGS4-BGOBEX Waterproof Case for Samsung Galaxy S4" to see if that does better.

The case looks great and keeps water out but I didn't know it was sound proof as well. Nobody could hear me talk and I had trouble hearing people. So the case is great unless you want to use the phone for what it is meant for. Talking to people. For the high price you have to pay the case should be flawless. They need to rework this case.

I am in the military as well as a part time firefighter, needless to say I break phones easily ( I could prob even break a Nokia) When I bought my S4 i knew that I would need a case to stand up to the abuse. Upon recomendations from the bestbuy staff I chose the Lifeproof case. The one good thing about the case is that it is very slim and not nearly as bulky as Otter Box. It does not look like I am carrying around a brick in my pocket. That being said that is about the only good thing about the case itself. The worst thing about this case is the durability, before I even got a chance to drop my phone on concrete or in the water to test its shock protection capabilities or waterproofness the charging port door broke. I charge my phone about 1 time a day (far from taxing on the case) in the span of about 3 months the cheap plastic that holds the "door" to the case itself broke. The warrenty on the phone is actually quite good, it is basically a no questions asked send in a picture process where you just send in a picture of the broken case and they send you a brand new case. unfortunatly in the span of 8 months this same problem has happened twice. for that kind of money I can buy a waterproof otterbox and just deal with the brick in my pocket.

Only good if you're careful by nature

I am pretty rough with my technology. Im an art student and an avid gardener and explorer. I've had two of these cases already and have not been impressed. The plastic stopper for the earphones will rip off first. Then the little door for the charging port will break the upper half of its latch, causing it to fall open. This allows water and dust to enter and become trapped in the case. The supplied earphone jack that maintains the seal around the phone is exceedingly tight when installed and requires a sharp pull to remove. This inevitably breaks the wires. The permanent screen protector is easily scratched (like, Day 1 scratched). I've had it replaced by warranty once a couple weeks ago and already need a new one. This would be my third since February 2014, it is now August. Most of the time I've owned it, the case has been broken. I'm 25, but have a friend who is 15 who had the same experiences with their case for a different phone. So not particularly teenager proof. The case did seem to work before the stoppers on either end broke, and has thus far provided enough impact protection to prevent the screen on my phone from breaking.

    Water proof case

Although these cases are water proof, I have not tried to put phone under water. At least I will feel comfortable and not worry about using my phone in the rain. I have always used Otter Box in the past until I found Lifeproof. These cases are better in the fact that they do not have the rubber outer shell that Otter Box uses. My daughter has been using a Lifeproof case on her iPod touch for about a year and has not had any problems, the case is the same as day one, unlike the Otter Box where the rubber shell stretches.

Do NOT buy for Samsung Galaxy s4

I bought this case for my Galaxy s4 phone today. I bought this one because I liked the waterproof feature as well as the hard plastic outer layer - that my OtterBox Defender series doesn't have. However, my boyfriend called me and he said that it sounded like I was mumbling and he could "hardly hear me". The sound quality was horrible!!! I had to put him on speaker phone just to have a normal conversation. I couldn't even last one whole day with this case. I am very unhappy with LifeProof, especially after spending $79.99!?!?! - Do not buy the LifeProof fre case for a Samsung Galaxy s4!

    LifeProof Fre Galaxy S4 Case

LifeProof designed a nice looking well fitting case. I like a waterproof case for daily use. I can not verify the waterproof claim. Every call I made I was told to speak up, talk louder or my voice was breaking up. I thought it might be carrier problems. I removed the LifeProof Fre case and all was perfect. My advise when seeking the perfect case is to look elsewhere.

    Has a design flaw

The over all case is well made and can take a beating, but the clip used to cover the micro usb charing plug is weak. I had mine less than a month and the hinges for the clip started to crack. I got it exchanged for a new only for it to happen 3 months later. My wife's case took 4 months to crack. After the the clip starts to fall apart and eventually falls off. Which in turn leaves the case no longer waterproof; which is why we bought this case to begin with. We have bought other lifeproof cases off Craigslist and the same thing has happened to them. I have even tried to warrenty the case throught lifeproof and have not received a response from them. I would try the $10 waterproof case offered online before getting this overpriced only waterproof as long as the clip holds out defective piece of refined dead dinosaur.

The Lifeproof covers really stands out from the rest, 'cause it doesn't look bigger, kind of like with the Otterbox ones (excluding the Symmetry line)

This seems like a good case, i bought it having high hopes. It is indeed waterproof as it states. i tested this myself, however after about a month the section of the case where the charger is protected cracked and eventually came off. Now water can easily enter since it does not close. after spending almost $100 dollars i expected better.

    Durable, but useless case

I wanted to get what I perceived to be the best case at the store when I got my new S4, so I assumed this one was just that due to it's high price. I was initially impressed when I attached the case as it felt very solid and durable. I don't make a lot of calls, so it wasn't until the second day when I discovered that my voice was being muffled significantly. I have since tried calling several different people, and they've all had to end the call and just text message me because it's impossible to hear what I'm saying without me shouting (an awkward public display that I'd prefer to avoid) . It seems like this is a common issue according to other reviewers, and I've tried the manufacturer recommendation of blowing through the mic hole for 3-4 seconds with no results other than looking insane. If you're looking for the perfect case, this is not it. Then again, if you never make any phone calls it might be just what you need.

For something called "Lifeproof" and the cost you think that it would be a decent product. But the first one had the rubber piece fall out of the headphone port and was lost. SO I contacted them and they were great and sent another immediately. But case number 2 had the same problem!! Just a couple weeks in the rubber broke again and you can not repair or reinstall in the case and the cover at the bottom that waterproofs the charger port also broke. All with simple daily use of closing and opening as I would charge or use headphones. Update your design and Ill consider buying again but for now this is junk and misleading.

Bought this case because my boss has it on his iPhone 5s, not the same thing at all. Litterally had it on for 1 day and bought Otterbox Commuter. This case makes your phone huge, it's hard to open charger port, very touchy on volume/lock/unlock buttons. Also read aabout people saying they are having hearing problem and I know I experienced tthem. Just do yourself a favor and don't buy it. Go a different route like me
