The keyboard must be attached in order for it to work. It uses the smart connector not Bluetooth like others in his class. If contemplating this unit over the Zagg alternative, I highly recommend this unit. I had two of the Zagg units break on me before I finally purchased this one. This unit does have the ability to lay nearly flat. It will fold on top of its self and you can use it in tablet mode. In fact, it works pretty well while in the tablet only mode because of the smart connector integration. As a keyboard, it works really well. The typing is clean and you know what you’re hitting the keys. Others that I have used have been spotty.

Sadly it effectively doubles the size and weight of the iPad pro, which defeats the purpose...had to return it because of this. Hopefully they will make a thinner version in the future.

It feels solid and sturdy and the keyboard is awesome. Hopefully I will not test it's drop worthiness, but i feel it will do the job.
