No additional drivers or equipment is required. The first time I plugged into my laptop USB, it recognized it as new equipment; thereafter I can plug/unplug at will. The mute button is inline on the cord and blinks when the mute is active. The only drawback and the reason it did not receive 5 stars, is the clip to attach to your shirt is not hinged to firmly grip it. The button has a tendency to move and slide off wherever you've attached it to your shirt/blouse.
