I simply change dongles, insert battery and the thing works on almost any surface without hesitation. It works on my Mahogany desk,on my black surfaced side desk and of course white paper.

Nice size for my hand (admittedly smaller hand size) while still being easy to slip in my laptop case. Just don't forget to turn it off before packing it up to save battery life.
