Keyboard Has a Weak Signal

If I plug the transmitter into the rear of the computer (which sits in a wood cabinet), the mouse works fine but the keyboard doesn't respond., even though the distance is all of 2 feet. If I move the transmitter to the front (which pokes out the front of the cabinet but also uses up one of two ports there), then the keyboard works fine.
