My mouse sticks, skips, randomly open lists.

It sometimes sticks and doesn't open the (?) page or screen; or skips all over the (?) page or screen; or randomly opens those (?) boxes with options. I changed the battery. Do I need a new mouse or a different mouse pad ? The (?) indicates my unfamiliarity with the terminology, result of no manual.
