Magic Jack was unable to interface with our router
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We were anxious to cut our phone bills dramatically, but unfortunately Magic Jack was incompatible with our router, and their customer service is so minimal that it was not helpful.

we did not like
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Unfortunately our excitement to buy this item did not last, when we could not find easy access to customer service! Having worked in customer service for a company for over 10yrs and being a consumer myself I feel that it is the #1 most important thing a company can offer and if it is right off the top that hard-- NO WAY!!!!

The concept is perfect, the hardware is not
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Buy it if you want to use the phone as a secondary form of communication not primary. Maybe even a third form. The device is not consistent.

Low cost but not without disadvantages
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Up front, I am not a techno guru. I've had the Magic Jack Plus for 6 months and just renewed the service for $30 for another year. I have invested a total of $80. Originally, I wanted to try 'cutting the cord' on my phone service since I was paying higher costs for broadband over DSL internet service. I paid $50 for the MJ+ at Best Buy and installed it via a laptop and ethernet cord to the broadband modem/router. The laptop connects it to the internet so you may set up your account preferences and phone number and such. It also powers it via USB. Once you get your preferences set, you can plug it directly to a USB charger and a 110 wall electrical outlet...this is the PLUS part....no computer required for everyday usage. So, basically the device is a USB device with two slots for cords #ethernet and telephone cord to your ph#. As far as keeping your phone number: I wanted to keep mine, but it seemed next to impossible as I kept having no response from their customer service. My town was out of numbers also. So, I opted to get a number from a town 90 miles away. Things I like: 1. low cost ph service 2. I have my preferences set so voicemail goes directly to email form and is emailed to my smart phone no matter where I am 3. ease in setting it up. Things I don't like: 1. dropped calls #at least one a day--but my parents have a cellular home phone and they also have dropped calls and pay more a month# 2. intermittent tone sound when numbers are dialed....some calls require it and I am not always able to comply 3. no fax capability 4. must replace your wall charger as it goes out periodically--look in the battery section of large box stores, they're easily found 5. didn't get to keep my number due to lack of customer response #though when my subscription was up, they were quick to respond# 6. no number was available in my town 7. no security--this is basically a phone over the internet...I would think it would be possible for hackers to invade. Just keep that in mind when using it. If I rate this MJ+ against a regular phone line, the only advantage is cost. That's a good advantage though. I, however, don't compare it to a phone line. I compare it to having nothing but cellular service or no phone service. So, for less than $5 #$80/18# a month, I am fine with a few flaws to have another method of reaching the outside world.

Not so great
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Well I can't receive all of my incoming calls. It would be a great deal if it worked all of the time. But it was just to good to be true, if it was , you would have to pay a lot more than $50 for it. Lol

Horrible
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. They say it's free international, but you have to purchase plans in order to call outside if Canada. That seems to be the only free area to call with this.

Inexpensive and works very well!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought my Magic Jack Plus 11 months ago. Have been very satisfied and even after switching from dial up to DSL broadband and buying my own Dish modem and the $50 for the Magic Jack Plus, I have already saved over 100$ on my phone bill in year one and will be saving about $200 this coming second year since I now own the MJ+ and the Modem. I plugged an ATT wireless base phone into the Magic Jack +. The wireless phone has 4 total wireless phones connected and all work fine throughout the home using the VOIP from the MJ+. Phone works well, free calls around the nation and to Canada etc. Have the ATT base phone answering machine set to answer calls after 3 rings prior to going to the MJ+ answering machine service so I can use the answering machine that way. Sound is a bit soft with some people on the phone based on their connection, but usually is fine. Had to unplug the MJ+ from the modem/power a couple of times in the past year to reset it when it seemed to hang up, no big deal. I had great success with their customer service which is handled over the internet by messaging them (typing back and forth). Was very helpful in answering my initial questions that first few days after buying the MJ+. Anyway, cutting the monthly basic service phone bill from $360 a year down to $30 a year sold me on it and still happy with the choice. Their web site is vastly improved from a year ago. CALL is their NYSE symbol and you can read about the company and how it is growing and gaining users yearly with over 3 million and counting. You might consider buying the 2 year Best Buy guarantee on the product if you are afraid it may fail you. So far, mine has done well for a year. Good news also was that since I picked a new phone number to use, I have not received any more annoying political calls or other solicitations I had been getting bombarded with. Happy, Happy, Happy.

What a great idea!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was moving & wanted to keep my old phone number because It had been my home number for about 15 years. Comcast couldn't port my old number to my new address - so I got MajicJack. Since it was so inexpensive I paid to keep my number for 10 years! Good Buy!

Pay less for home phone and cell phone.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I just started using the new magicjack plus after also using the previous two models. The new plus has even clearer call quality and also includes use of the magicjack app using the same number as your magicjack plus home phone service. The magicjack app can be used on apple or android phones and tablets.I use it for free phone service on a kindle fire HD.If I have a wifi connection,I get free phone service with the magicjack app.I use a tracfone cellphone for rare occasions when I am away from home and don't have access to wifi.My total phone bill for all phone services comes out to about $10 a month. The new magicjack plus includes six months of service. After that it is about $30 a year($2.50 a month) or you can save even more if you sign up for a five year plan for about $100($20 a year or $1.67 a month).Very happy with magicjack and tracfone service.I would take all reviews with a grain of salt, including mine, considering that magicjack is a company that is disrupting the profit margins of the bigger phone and cable companies and I suspect some of the online reviews are from people with different agendas who don't actually use magicjack.Try it out for yourself and I think you will be happy with the results.

Magic Jack is GREAT
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The magic jack I got works flawless and was so easy to install. I have ATT uverse for internet if that makes a difference not sure. Call quality is crystal clear but a little quiet compared to my Verizon home service. It just plugs into your router and then into power and your phone. Then you just register online or I guess you can do it over the phone. Setting up voice mail was easy also. I have not had to pay anything yet because you get 6 months free so I guess they will contact me then to pay for my year. It does cost 19.95 to keep your old # and 9.95 a year after so I just got a new number that was local. Great product if you wanna have a home phone and save a bunch of money. Call quality is just amazing :)

Great Device For Travel
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This Is an excellent device for travel. I travel frequently and find this to be an invaluable resource to stay in touch. As long as you have a good internet connection your calls are crystal clear. If your internet connection in not good you will experience "drop outs" in your call quality, but that is not the fault of Magic Jack. The only real complaint I have is the tech support. There is no live person to speak with, and support is only available via internet chat. Apparently they are given a script and do not deviate from it. I will not drag on this review by spending too much time complaining, but the long and short of it is simply this I was in Singapore and had a problem with long distance time I had purchased for my Magic Jack. I tried to get tech support and after spending the better part of two hours online chatting I kept being transferred to what they call a higher authority till finally they deactivated my Magic Jack, though it was functioning properly and had lots of time left on it. I ended up having to use my cell for a few days until I got home. At which time I again attempted to have tech support rectify the problem to no avail. Lets face it folks I really tried I did this every day for a min of 2 hours for an entire week. I finally gave up, and stopped using Magic Jack altogether. After some months of travel and huge cell bills later I reluctantly bought the new plus model. As with all units you get one year of service. So I decide to not take chances this time and after activation a month later I purchased their additional 5 years of service, figuring that I could look forward to a total of 6 years without having to deal this tech support for anything. Well the good news I got my five additional years added, the bad news, that was it instead of now having 5 years and 11 months, they knocked of my 11 months and only gave me 5 years of service, and yes you guessed it I have been trying to get tech support to correct this for over a month now with no success. I'm just going to settle for it working and my 5 years for now. It still saves me a fortune as I travel frequently

works great if your lucky
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It was fine for one year then there were problems. They updated their systems, and had no working hone 3 days, then no caller ID for 10 days. It then worked 2 days and now I can't get ANY incoming calls. You can only talk to them with :live chat"....very frustrating to tell your story over and over to different people telling you to unplug this and that and plug back in to no avail! They can't check what is wrong....they can only ask you to perform things to check your computer connection and working physical phone. I asked 3 times for a replacement unit....finally being sent, but taking 5-10 business days...and I still can't get any incoming calls for 2 weeks.....not work having Magic jack after all!! Not reccomending it, but some people are lucky.
