BY FAR the best Bluetooth speaker I've ever used

I've historically had *very* poor experiences with compact Bluetooth speakers (an Amazon Black Friday one died a few months in, and a JBL's chassis started literally crumbling around it after 3 months; neither had great audio quality), so I came into this with extremely low expectations in spite of the prestige behind the Marshall brand name. So far, I've been very pleasantly surprised. Form factor: After unboxing, it's a bit bigger than I had expected, but is still fine for the space I had allocated for it. With a surprising amount of heft to it (the shipping label said 3 lbs, and it feels every ounce), it seems *wonderfully* sturdy. I'm not going to try, but I could probably drop it off a 3 story balcony with only minimal damage to the ground. The manufacturer's claims about its portability does raise an eyebrow given its bulk and weight, but I guess it is on the upper end of models meant to be "portable?" I certainly wouldn't want to go on a hike with this thing lashed to my bag; waist; or wrist (not that that's something I would do in general), but it's simple enough to move around the house. Though it's billed as IP67 dust- and water-resistant (30 min @ 1 m), the lack of an explicit cover for the USB-C port means I'm more than a little hesitant to trust that too much after having multiple Samsung Galaxy phone ports with higher IP ratings fail. I happen to have some little rubber gasket USB-C port plugs I bought for precisely this purpose after I replaced the last phone with a port that failed, so I installed one of those for peace-of-mind while using it in my shower. So far, so good, I guess? UI, battery: All the external surfaces and controls feel extremely high quality and comfortable to use, and the LED battery gauge is an *enormously* welcome surprise when I've been accustomed to only a single white/red indicator light. I love the discrete function buttons for power; Bluetooth pairing; play/pause (the one concession to "simplicity" with which I'm comfortable); and the comfortable 4-directional pattern for volume up/down and previous/next, as I detest the prevailing trend of consolidating core functions that should be separate hard-wired buttons into unnecessarily complex soft button-press "procedures." It came with about an 80% charge (based on the number of lit "notches" on the LED battery gauge) out of the box, which was also a nice little surprise. Charging it fully from that point took a little less than 30 minutes, which is impressive since that last 10-20% typically takes the longest. The app also displays numerical battery percentage, and as it's gone down by about 10% with ~3-4 hours of intermittent use (3-5 songs, pause for a minute or 2 while doing something else, rinse and repeat) across several days, I do not doubt the manufacturer's claim of 32+ hours of playtime. Sound: There is a Marshall BT app, because of course there is, and every hardware manufacturer wants to force us to use separate apps for what should be basic functionality <eyeroll>. The app evidently has *radically* different features for different device models, as the app store images and text did not resemble what I got in the slightest: the store page depicts full EQ customization, but for this model only allows you to choose 1 of 3 EQ presets (default, bass/treble boost, mid boost). While I found the "Marshall" default acceptable in general, I didn't notice much of a difference between it and the "Push" bass/treble boost beyond the fact I didn't care as much for the latter. Though it might be a form of sampling bias with the specific J-pop vocal examples I chose to test it, I found the "Voice" mid boost virtually worthless, as it didn't improve the vocals noticeably and tended to render everything else tinny and thin like the external speaker of a 10 year old cel phone. Unsatisfactory EQ customization options notwithstanding, the sound quality itself is *phenomenal.* I'm beyond impressed that this full, rich sound can come out of something so relatively tiny, and the volume is *shockingly powerful.* Results will obviously vary considerably with source audio, but I was getting an average of ~70-80 dB (I have a decibel meter phone app) from a variety of tracks about 3 feet away at maximum volume with absolutely no distortion or noise. I guess I shouldn't be surprised given the Marshall pedigree, but I really cannot overstate just how *great* this thing sounds. "360° sound" claims are not mere marketing hyperbole, as it sounds amazing from almost every angle except *precisely* frame-on at right-angles to the speaker mesh (and even then, it's just a little muted). Bottom-line: All-in-all, this is a *fantastic* speaker in general, let alone for either a compact or a Bluetooth speaker. I *highly* recommend it on the basis of the sound and build quality alone for even a discerning audiophile, let alone a garden variety consumer. My only *incredibly minor* complaint of any substance is the weird EQ settings in the app, and ultimately that's basically a non-issue when the default setting is perfectly fine. I genuinely don't know how I could be any happier with it.

Hi Peter, thanks for your review. You are correct: the size of the speaker is best suited to a smaller, more personal space like a bedroom or single room. If you are looking to fill a bigger space with audio, then we recommend the larger speakers such as the Middleton or Tufton.

The Eberton III is a small speaker with rich, room-filling, sound and excellent battery life! Design I think this is an incredible looking speaker! It feels solid and well made. I think the grate on the front and back is metal. It definitely has a good "Marshall" look. It feels very solid - with quite a bit of weight to it for the size. It has speakers firing out the front and the back, giving it what I think is an excellent room filling sound that is more than you would expect from a Bluetooth speaker of this size. The controls, mic (it can be used with your phone to answer calls), and battery indicator are on top. More info below on those. There is a place to attach a lanyard on the bottom corner towards the back. but for some reason, no lanyard is included. It actually says not included in the manual. I looked because at first I thought I missed it in the packaging. It's waterproof (1 meter under water for 30 minutes) and dust proof but it looks so incredible, the last thing I want to do is get it dirty! It could be really hard to clean the dirt out of the front and back grills. When I paired it to my phone, it also asked if I wanted to pair using Bluetooth Low Energy. I haven't seen may devices use that. The USB C charging port is on the right side. Controls There is a four-way rocker button on top to control it. Press down for play/pause/answer (call functions), forward/backward for volume control, and left/right for next and previous. I would rather have separate buttons, but this works well and the fact that the control is so large makes it easy to use. It's recessed down in the top so it should be less likely to break. The top also has a power button and a Bluetooth button. Those are a bit hard to see in bad lighting but you can feel where they're at and they're easy to press. Sound When I first saw it, I was a little concerned that the sound would be a little weak, as small as it is. I thought it would be a little bigger. Then I heard it and I was nothing but impressed! It puts out amazing sound! Rap with deep bass, classical with frequencies all over the spectrum, and lots of other music, as far as I could tell everything was being reproduced faithfully. Highs were high and bass was very good - better than I expected from a speaker this small. And did you catch the part earlier where I mentioned it playing audio out the front and the back?! That's no joke! It seems to have duplicate speakers firing in both directions. I kept flipping it around while listening and moving around it, I couldn't tell a difference. Both sides sounded full and accurate - and the same volume. So it really does produce what I think it excellent, room-filling sound. Marshall calls it 360 degree sound. Battery Life Marshall claims 35 hours on a charge and I totally believe it! I've used it for many, many hours, at different volume levels, and it's still at 79%! Even though that wasn't all at high volume, I've used it a lot and I'm very impressed by the battery life! Besides that, there is an excellent battery life display with 10 bars! It seems most devices will have maybe 3 to 5 bars, if any. This is great because not only can see how much power is left, you can also get a better idea of the speed it's going down. Then, using the app, you can increase the lifetime of your battery. There are three levels of "Battery Preservation", "Standard" - which sets the maximum charge to 95%, "Medium" - which also reduces the charging speed if the temperature is outside the ideal range, and "Max" - which limits the charging speed all the time. All of those settings help the battery last longer over time. You can also set Battery Preservation to "None" if you want. Marshall Bluetooth App The App is pretty simple but offers a few nice features. One, you can set the EQ. There are three options, the default of Marshall - which I think is nicely balanced, "Push" - which boosts the bass and treble. It's noticeable and I think a great option to have. I'm still sticking with Marshall most of the time. Then there's the third option which is "Voice" to, as you would expect, bring out the vocals a little more. There are no other EQ settings available but for me and for this speaker, I'm very happy with that. The other main feature of the app is the "Battery Preservation" settings, mentioned above. You can also use the app to see other Marshall speakers as well as system things like upgrading the firmware. Summary The Emberton III, to me, is a high quality, refined, Bluetooth speaker. From the look and feel to the sound it puts out it shows that this is a "III" and not a first attempt. Here are some things it doesn't do, in case any of them are deal breakers for you. As far as I can tell there is no left/right separation for stereo - with it being so small the stereo may not even be noticeable anyway if it had it. There is no 1/8" inch stereo in/aux jack or even a USB-C to 1/8" in stereo. I wish it came with a lanyard, but at least it has a place to attach one. It would be cool if when you changed volume, the battery indicator would switch to volume level temporarily - maybe they could do that with a firmware update. There is no pairing with any other Marshall speakers. Some other Marshall models do offer that. But overall, for a portable Bluetooth speaker, it's got excellent sound, it's waterproof and made to handle some dirt too...and the battery life is incredible!

I have a fondness for Marshall speakers as we’ve been enjoying our Marshall Stanmore speaker for quite some time. It has stood the test of time in sound and looks as these speakers are built to last. This Emberton III has been no exception. Obviously, sound is of utmost importance when it comes to speaker quality, yet an equal draw for me was the aesthetics of the Marshall speaker line. They are just a cool vibe, retro look that takes one back to concerts and Marshall amps. I love the black and gold combination that is eye catching and designed for use. The Emberton III packs a lot of sound in a small package. I’m not a bit disappointed whether listening to Let Her Cry, Don’t Stop Believin’, Sweet Emotion, Riptide or lots of other songs that I tried out the Emberton III with. Bass tends to be the thing that I often find lacking in portable speakers and Marshall has gotten it right with this one. Dynamic Loudness adjusts the tonal balance as one changes the volume. The volume put out by a speaker that is 6” long is impressive. Battery life is noted as 32+ hours with a full charge achieved in two hours. One crazy feature of the Emberton III is an IP67 dust and waterproof rating. I’m not one to purposefully try this, but it can be submerged in 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes so good protection for pool use perhaps. The speaker also has a bult-in microphone for hands-free talking which may come in handy for those using it in various places like their office or in the kitchen. The feel of this Bluetooth speaker is substantial and solid, yet with a weight of only 1.5 lbs. Portable enough to take along, but solid enough to stay situated on a solid surface. I like the feel of the center, gold dial to adjust volume or switch between songs. The battery level indicator is well lit and all other controls are intuitive to use. The Marshall Bluetooth app is available for free download and features three equalizer presets, a battery preservation option and over the air firmware updates. The Marshall speaker line hits all the winning marks for us and we’d recommend them highly. I’ve no doubt we will get as many years of enjoyment from the Emberton III as we have from our Stanmore speaker.

    Coolest Bluetooth speaker ever

Let’s just start with how cool this speaker looks. It gives that old fashioned Marshall rock-n-roll amp vibe. It feels very solid and has a little weight to it but not heavy at all. It is also a nice size, easy to store and transport. The textured outside seems durable and it is stated to be dust and waterproof so you should feel comfortable using it outdoors. It’s not really stated how waterproof so might not want to leave in a heavy rain or dunk in a pool. Easy setup, already in pairing mode when first turned on. I found the guitar-ish startup and shutdown sounds to be kind of neat. I do wish the supplied cable was USB-A to USB-C configuration rather than two USB-C ends since you must supply your own charger and most of the ones you have laying around are probably going to have a USB-A connector. The sound is phenomenal with speakers firing out of both sides, it really fills the listening space and makes you think that sound is coming from something much larger. There is a built-in microphone for taking calls from your connected device. I have not really utilized that feature yet, but it seems nice to have. It advertises 32+ hours of playtime. I’ve not done any scientific measurements but can say that I have used for hours at a time over several days between charges and have not run the battery down. The 10-bar power level is super detailed and way more precise than most other devices having 3, 4 or 5 bars at most. The red power meter stays on all the time but dims after a short while. If you download the companion app you can manage firmware, set battery preservation, and choose from 3 basic EQ presets. That’s about the extent of the interaction with the speaker from the app. You can also find guides and manuals to many other Marshall products in the app along with a support link that just opens a web page in your browser app. I also find it odd that the app’s name is “Bluetooth” on iOS. The only complaint that I could come up with is minor but the black embossed buttons and text on the textured outer surface of the speaker is hard to read and see unless at the perfect angle in the right lighting.

It looks great. I’ve got a couple comments on how retro/cool it is. The sound is just “mid” though. I read they use Sony components and dressed it up with Marshall aesthetics. I wish I had researched it beforehand but I was at the beach and had forgotten our superior Boom’s. Holds up great at the beach otherwise but if you want better sound look elsewhere.

The Marshall Emberton III comes in a well packaged box with instructions plus an app to download. It connected to my phones Bluetooth easily and immediately started playing good sounding music. I connected it to my Satellite radio app and it sounded good on a variety of stations and music types. It is dust and waterproof and can easily be carried from room to room or to the garage if you are working on projects. It holds 30 some hours on a single charge and charges with a USB-C. It will be ideal to take along on the boat or out into the yard when having dinner parties or doing yard work. The case is around 6x3x3 inches so it is nice size the delivers quality sound. Grilles at the front and rear essentially means that the audio is multidirectional so it really fills the room with great sound. It can also be used as a speaker for your cell phone. This is really a sweet little portable speaker. The one thing that could improve this would be to have a carrying strap like some other Bluetooth Speakers but not a deal breaker since it is quite light to carry.
