Review: Marshall Kilburn III Portable Bluetooth Sp
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really liked the Kilburn III compared to other similarly priced and featured speakers. The sound quality is rich and balanced, and having dedicated bass, treble, and volume controls gives it a level of customization most competitors skip. The build feels premium, and the black-and-brass design adds a classic touch that stands out. It’s portable, powerful, and delivers exactly what I wanted without compromise.

Loud and strong bass!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was looking to upgrade my Bluetooth speakers besides of JBLs speakers, they sound good but I was looking for that extra bass in the low frequencies. After several reviews de used to go with Marshall Kilburn III and very happy to say that this speakers delivers! Strong low end bass, clean, my friends won’t believe the sound is coming from only this small speaker during the last party. Also mids and highs are great! Battery is outstanding! Finally what is better than my JBL Boombox and Xtreme or Charge is that the speaker will deliver full sound even on battery, with JBL I had to connect to AC.

A Luxurious Speaker that Encapsulate Rock History
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As someone who appreciates both design and performance, I had high hopes when I unboxed the Marshall Kilburn III and let me tell you, this speaker lives up to the hype. From the moment I turned it on, I knew this wasn’t just a Bluetooth speaker, it felt like a centerpiece to show off in my living room. Setup for the Marshall Kilburn III is very straightforward. Just hold the Bluetooth pairing button down and find it in your Bluetooth devices list as “Kilburn III” and you're good to go. If you want more customization with your speaker you can download the Marshall app from the app or play store, which then gives you the ability to customize the EQ and you can store up to two audio profiles and can switch between those profiles via the “M” button on the speaker. I love actual physical controls, and Marshall nailed it here. The signature knobs on top allow you to fine-tune the volume, bass and treble, and they feel smooth and responsive. The joystick-style knob for power is just a delight to flick on and off. The play/pause, and track skipping switch is responsive and never miss-clicks, pauses or double skipped. Carrying it around is super convenient thanks to the sturdy faux leather and velvet guitar-like handle strap. It's got just enough weight to feel premium without being a burden. I’ve taken it to the park, the patio, and even set it up with my projector screen to be the main speaker and there was zero lossless with the Bluetooth connection. And the Strap is removable if you want to take it off when it's staying in one place. One of the most impressive features of this speaker is the 50+ hours of battery life. I've charged it once since I’ve got it, and after a full weekend of use playing music in the kitchen, outside on the balcony and with the projector it still had juice left. It’s freeing not having to worry about keeping it charged and plugged in all the time. A nice little feature that this speaker offers is that it can also charge your phone. I didn’t expect to use this feature much, but I found myself using it a few times. It’s a subtle but a nice handy feature to have and I hope to see more companies add this feature going forward. Now where the Kilburn III truly shines is with its sound using the Marshall’s True Stereophonic technology. This allows for no matter where you are standing, you are able to hear the sound evenly with no dead zones, just balanced, rich audio all around. The mids are full, the highs are crisp, and the bass digs deep without getting too muddy or raddling. A kind of disappointing but understandable feature is that this speaker is only rated IP54 for dust-resistant and water-resistant and not dustproof and waterproof. It's a trade off you have to make for that luxurious aesthetic the Kilburn III has to offer. So, I would not recommend bringing this to the beach or the lake. Pros: Over 50 hours of battery life per charge 360° sound fills any room or space evenly Rich, dynamic sound at any volume level Customizable controls for bass, treble, and presets Doubles as a phone charger via USB-C Iconic Marshall design with solid, retro build quality Cons: No smart assistant or Wi-Fi support On the heavier side for a portable speaker IP54 water/dust resistance. Not waterproof or Dustproof Overall, The Marshall Kilburn III feels like a speaker built for people who really love music and appreciate sound quality with a bit of rock-and-roll flair. It’s not the most feature-packed in terms of smart tech, but it's all about the elegance and pure sound, and that unmistakable Marshall aesthetic, you can't go wrong with this speaker.

Perfect midsize speaker
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This speaker looks real nice, a perfect size for portability, and I do like the handle on it. The controls are easy to work with and simple enough to customize a better sound for your taste if you want. With the Marshall app, you can further manage the equalizer among many other options. On top of it, I used it throughout the week and barely put a dent in the battery. Here a few things I’m sharing from my experience. Marshall App This is where you really get full control of your speaker. It syncs with your Marshall devices to get additional customization options, monitor battery from your phone, and will update the firmware on your device. The M physical on the speaker can be customized for equalizer settings on the app, you can manage your battery maintenance settings if you choose to prolong the battery, and there is a speaker placement option that helps fine tune sound settings based on your location (ie near walls or in open area, etc…). Performance The speaker has been great so far. I’ve been wanting a mid size speaker that’s easy to carry around while still having good battery life and sound levels, and this hits the nail on the head. Bluetooth range has been good, I’ll move my phone between rooms while the speaker is still 30-40 ft in the other room and no issues with the connection. The volume is pretty good for its size, but don’t expect room shaking sound. When indoors and outdoors, you can hear it pretty well, but you might struggle to get some over-the-top sound if you are in a noisy environment. I put it on our golf cart and heard it pretty good while driving, but I imagine areas like a beach where it can get windy you might struggle to push out sound to a large area. Its nice that the speaker does have a “360 degree” sound, where the back emits music as well. Not sure if its quite 360, but you should clearly hear the music in an area where the speaker is in the middle. Other Some other things to note, I really like the USB C connection. Having one USB C cable to charge devices is so much more convenient than bringing a bunch of unique chargers when traveling. Charging my phone from the speaker works great too, the charging speed has been pretty decent too. I like the feel of the ON switch for the speaker. It has a nice feel and its quick and easy, not a typical hold the ON button for a few seconds like you find in other speakers, this is much better. A couple of things that could use improvement in my opinion, is the waterproof rating. I feel like if it gets splashed too hard or it finds itself in a good rain, it might damage the speaker. I think most portable speakers have better water/dust proof ratings these days, and their description of it being able to handle a “little spill” isn’t very reassuring. Hopefully this won’t ever be an issue for me. I also wish they had an option to sync with other Marshall speakers, but that does not appear to be possible. Overall, I do feel it’s a great speaker that has a unique look that I think will impress people, and good sound to it that will work for most settings. For the price, I feel like there should be better available features such as the ones I just mentioned. The battery life has been super good so far, and that is one of the bigger factors that make this a strong buy IMO. Using its’ battery to charge devices is a win-win as well. For reference, I have attached a picture of the speaker next to a hat so you can get an accurate idea of its size.

My speaker is so much cooler than your speaker
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bluetooth speakers are everywhere, and most of them look pretty futuristic and cool. Like sleek plastic spaceship beans! Or with a configurable array of flashing lights! And all of that is very fun and very hot. But this Marshall Kilburn III, it's the coolest. First though - it's an excellent speaker in function. It sounds great, and there's meaningful range on the equalizer options. It gets really loud for blaring music, and it's nice and clear for those more reasonable times when you're just catching up on podcasts or whatever. It's a new consumer electronic product in the year 2025, so it's required to have a companion app. I mostly find these pretty useless, but this one comes with a few equalization options and some nice-to-have configurations like a battery life extender and a "placement compensation" that adjust the sound if the speaker is on the edge of a surface or near a wall. It also connected with ease - my Pixel phone recognized it immediately and the connection is solid. Plus it includes actual USB-C charging - so it gets to capacity in a hurry. So it's a really good speaker that does speaker things really well. But the main draw for me is the physical look and feel. It's fun that it looks like a Marshall amp, and if that was just for cosmetic giggles, that would be fine. But the designers of this took their assignment seriously. The power button is a hefty toggle switch. The dials are substaintal, with nice ticks to indicated increments (I looked it up - this is called a "detented rotary encoder"). There are bright indicator lights for audio levels and battery llife, and a configurable button (I use it to switch the equalizer presets). It looks and feels like a vintage piece of equipment - and without being excessively heavy. It's not the most lightweight bluetooth speaker - but it's very easy to move around, and comes with a leather & velvet strap reminiscent of a guitar strap. If you're maybe a little fatigued on fog-colored, bevel-edged accessories that just blend in with all the other tech gadgets and you want a speaker that works really well and brings some style along while doing it, grab the Marshall Kilburn III.

Huge sound in a small beautiful package!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am going to start off by saying how much I love love love the design of the Marshall Kilburn III. It matches my game/music room so perfect also delivers on sound quality too. Do not be fooled by it's super portable dimensions of roughly 10 x 6 x 7, this speaker packs a HUGE punch. In the box you get the speaker itself, a USB C to C cable for charging (you need to supply your own power brick) and the quick start guide. Pairing is as easy as it gets. Once charged, turn it on and click the BT button and use whatever device you want to find and it pairs instantly. I would recommend downloading the Marshall App first as you can pair the speaker with it as well and also use the speaker to it's full potential. Speaker design itself is gorgeous. Looking like a mini amp with 100% fully functional tactile buttons and a leather look/feel. The speaker screams premium. From the speaker itself, you can turn it on/off. control/fine tune your EQ settings, play/pause/skip, see battery level with the red LED bar, and use the M button (accesses presets or you can use the App to customize it). On the rear is the Aux input and the USB C for charging the speaker or to charge your own device as a charging bank. They boast 50+ hours on a full charge and so far it is true. The App unfortunately does not show the percentage for me other than saying 32+ hours remaining (since full charge). Performance and sound is excellent! I use the App to create my own personal EQ setting and then you can fine turn it further with the physical dials on the speaker itself to get the very best of the music you want to hear. The Kilburn III can easily fill up a large house with sound and not even get distorted at high volume. Highs were great and Bass was thumping. I loved every minute of my playlists while working. For the super audiophiles out there wondering about Codecs, it looks like only SBC and AAC are supported. Marshall in my personal opinion blew it out of the water. Design, quality, performance, battery life and portability are all 10 out of 10s. I replaced my other big name BT daily driver with the Marshall and I never knew I could hear the difference in music until I did.

Impressive Portable Bluetooth Speaker
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Marshall Kilburn III Portable Bluetooth Speaker is the coolest looking Bluetooth speaker that I have ever owned. I love how it looks like a guitar amp, and I think it would be a great gift for someone who is into guitars. It has a solid build quality with retro-styled tactile mechanical knobs and switches that feel satisfying when manipulated. The leather-like covering and strap also adds to the retro aesthetic. The package comes with the speaker itself, a USB-C cable, and a quick start guide. It does not come with a USB charger but I have plenty of spare ones around my house, so it wasn’t a problem for me. There is also an optional app that you can download from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store that offers additional customizations and the ability to update the firmware. At first, I wasn’t planning on downloading the app, but when I paired my phone’s Bluetooth with the Marshall Kilburn III, it presented a display suggesting that I download the app. The app allows you to set an equalizer to customize the sound to your preference. There are presets for the classic MARSHALL sound, BASS BOOST, MID BOOST, TREBLE BOOST, MID REDUCTION, and CUSTOM. The app also allows you to customize the behavior of the M-Button on the speaker. The default behavior is to have the M-Button engage an equalizer. The app also provides settings for placement compensation (for example, if you place the speaker near an edge or wall) as well as the ability to set the standby timeout value which turns off the Kilburn III if left unused after a selected amount of time. Finally, the app allows you to tune in to play any available AURACAST broadcast. I was not able to test this feature as I don’t have any AURACAST enabled equipment that I know of. When I installed and ran the app, it found a newer firmware (v1.1.1) for the speaker. The process of upgrading the firmware was very easy. Overall, I found the app to be very polished and easy to use. Key Specifications 45Hz - 20Khz Stereo Sound 1x 4-inch woofer and 2x 2-inch full-range speakers with Bass Reflex system 1x 30-Watt Class D Amplifier for the woofer and 2x 10-Watt Class D Amplifiers for the full-range speakers Bluetooth 5.3 (LE) and 1x Aux 3.5 mm jack USB-C port for charging the speaker and to use the speaker as a battery bank to charge other devices (such as your phone) Large replaceable Li-ion battery for 50+ hours of playtime Controls for Bass, Treble, Volume, ON/OFF, Media Jog, M-Button, and Bluetooth Dust & Water Resistant (IP54) Sound Quality The sound was very impressive. The speaker provides a good soundstage that fills the room. The overall sound seemed warm, full and rich while providing crisp and clear vocals. I think it actually produces sound that is as good or better than my amp and bookshelf speaker stereo system in my spare room. I’ve always heard good things about a Bass Reflex system and this did not disappoint. The amount of bass coming out of this small portable speaker was most impressive. The Marshall Kilburn III excels at playing rock music and any type of song with good bass. I was also pleasantly surprised that it also handles soundtracks and classical music extremely well. The Bluetooth connection was very strong and stable. My phone easily found and connected to the speaker whenever I powered it up and I never experienced any dropouts when playing. Summary I can easily recommend the Marshall Kilburn III for anyone looking for a portable Bluetooth speaker with long playback time. The Marshall Kilburn III has a very cool guitar amp retro-look that is very appealing, and the sound is really great. As someone who is concerned about E-waste, I love the fact that it also has a user replaceable battery. I also love that it can double as a USB power bank for charging your phone and other devices.

Marshall’s speaker looks and sounds like no other.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Marshall Kilburn III Portable Bluetooth Speaker is very much updated from the successful version I owned almost 6 years ago. It’s still unique in its design but there are so many new features that it might convince me to ignore the price increase. Well, I’m going to ignore the price, but mostly because this Marshall portable speaker is so special. First, and maybe least, it truly makes a visual statement, signaling that you are a knowing, rock enthusiast. Who else could appreciate what the brand logo means, or how this design ruled music venues dating back to Peter Townsend, Eric Clapton and many others. The design looks and feels great, because it feels substantial, rugged even, but with modern materials that perfectly draws out nostalgia with the attention to detail. And, most surprising, it plays in a way that is very convincing in its power, and its solid bass but accurate sound reproduction. It loves to rock out, but a Joni Mitchell or Miley Cyrus stays smooth while filling a pretty large space. SETUP and New Features: Marshall has increased battery capacity significantly, suggesting 50+ hours of play time. I’m gonna take their word for it, ‘cause I lack the patience to monitor for that long. Feel free to take it anywhere with an IP54 rating describing protection from dust and some water resistance. The Marshall App is not typical, except maybe for the desirable 5 band equalizer. But, then I’ve never seen the ability to quickly call up two saved equalizer settings by simply pressing the M button on the physical speaker. By the way, the buttons and all the knobs on the physical speaker are rich looking and feeling. The Marshall App allows an unusual adjustment, Placement Compensation, to correct for excessive bass gain when a speaker is located near multiple surfaces. A corner placement, for example, is compensated and immediately sounds very natural, with less muddled bass. As a user, I can manage the battery to extend its life in the Battery preservation settings menu or ensure maximum charge all the time. PERFORMANCE: The Kilburn III fills a large space with big sound, done cleanly. There is a bass solidity that far exceeds its modest dimensions (10.75W x 5.91”D x 6.65”H; 6.17lbs). The sound spills out from both the front and rear of the speaker. The resulting sound is a broad stereo stage. You can adjust the balance of bass, midlevel and treble sounds using the App Equalizer or the mechanical/electronic controls on the top plate of the speaker. Those older classic rock recordings are nicely corrected to deliver recorded performances that now seem live. Modern music is better equalized and the Marshall has no problem pounding out sound without distortion. I played recordings from across my large playlists. I wasn’t let down by any type of music. My favorite classic rock were dramatically improved. You will test your own favorites and I do think the Marshall is up to the task. SUMMARY: I said it 6 years ago with the first of Marshall’s portable BT speakers. The Kilburn III is a great sounding speaker, very much improved over earlier iterations and with a useful collection of App-based control settings. Many music lovers will recognize the historic design reference which adds to the fun. The Marshall will find its way into diners, coffee shops and anywhere else old rockers spend their time.

Big sound in a big package!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This qualifies as a portable speaker, but I was not expecting something this big. The stated dimensions are 10.4” x 5.9” by 6.65”, and it weighs about 6 pounds, so it’s not something you’d carry around all day. Given that it has a stated 50-hour battery life and a bass reflex sound system, it needs to have a larger footprint. The build quality is great, and it looks as good as it sounds with a black case and brass tone accents. The battery is rechargeable via a USB-C cord, and with a 30-watt charger, you can get 8 hours of play time with a 20-minute charge, or you can fully charge the speaker in 3 hours. As long as the battery level is over 20%, which can be determined by the 10-level power meter in the control panel, you can use the speaker as a power bank. And the battery is user replaceable, should the need arise, which is a very uncommon feature. The unit also has a 3.5mm jack to input an auxiliary stereo or mono device. The top panel houses the controls, and you can turn the unit on/off with a toggle or adjust the bass, treble, volume, stop/start/rev/fwd media, along with Bluetooth. Additionally, there’s what is called an “M Button,” which can toggle equalizer modes. The housing contains one 4” woofer and two full-range speakers, all of which have dedicated amplifiers. The unit also and an IP54 rating for dust and water resistance! This truly provides 360-degree stereo sound, which is customizable via the companion app. Aside from customer equalizer settings, there are also positional settings that will adjust the sound based on how far away the speaker is from a wall, or in a corner, or near the edge of a table. And last of all, but most importantly, the sound is fantastic! At low volume or blasting, the sound is clear, crisp, and deep, covering all the ranges.

Rock & Roll All Night And Into The Next Night Too.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was introduced to Marshall’s consumer speakers with the Stanmore III a couple years ago. Of course, Marshall equipment has been a fixture at rock concerts for over 50 years. I’m not ashamed to say that, while I love the sound of my Stanmore III, I was initially drawn to it for its definitive styling including the legendary Marshall script with the music history it holds. The metal buttons, switches, and backlit dials that are a rarity these days and make a tactile, emotional connection in a way plastic or touch sensitive controls can’t. This is true of the entire Marshall speaker line including this Kilburn III. Marshall speakers, to me are timeless and handsome. HI-FI WITHOUT WI-FI IS GETTING LONG IN THE BLUETOOTH Still, while I enjoy my Stanmore III, it’s not perfect, so I was anxiously awaiting to see what update would come to, what I regard as the Stanmore III’s portable sibling, the Kilburn. I now played with the new Kilburn III, and it has a lot of nice upgrades, but I’m disappointed with the omission of one – it still has no Wi-Fi connectivity (AirPlay 3, Chromecast, etc). It’s still just Bluetooth, and per the spec sheet isn’t compatible with any high audio res or lossless codecs. At the Kilburn III’s premium level this is a legitimate reason to look elsewhere. This is the chief reason why I cannot give the Kilburn III a 5-star rating. Despite this, I ordered the Kilburn III anyway, because I wanted a portable speaker and appreciate the adaptability of the Marshall speaker sound and aesthetic. If you are not a fan of Bluetooth it has a 3.55mm mini jack aux input. So, while it misses the Wi-Fi bell and whistle it still harmonizes with my many use cases and room decor. Another plus, the Kilburn III’s Bluetooth range, at least in my use, is unyielding even at it’s far limit. I can move 40ft away with my phone in hand and the connection never cracks up or pauses. IT’S GOT THE POWER Easily, and literally, the biggest upgrade for the Kilburn III is it’s 50 hours rated battery. For a portable speaker, ultimately, that is more useful than Wi-Fi connectivity, so there is that. This marathon battery life is likely assisted by the efficiency of Bluetooth LE and certainly 50 hours couldn’t be achieved with Wi-Fi. Frankly I was suspect of the 50-hour claim until I let it play off and on for many hours over 4 days at mid volume. I got over 50 hours, but, of course, YMMV. I don’t think any Kilburn III’s competitor comes close to this mark. And there is more - the battery is replaceable. That is not a phrase I get to type much anymore. This is huge for both the consumer and environment. Marshall speakers can last “forever,” but batteries don’t. But wait, there’s still more! The Kilburn III can play all day, wherever you are but the mobile device you are streaming music from probably can’t. Cleverly, the Kilburn III doubles as a battery bank to charge up your phone or tablet if it gets low on power. There is a downside here too though. In my experience, the Kilburn III does not charge while it’s in use. To be fair I was only using a 60w charger but when it was plugged to the Kilburn the battery % kept decreasing. When not in use it charges up fine with this charger. BUILT LIKE A ROADIE The Kilburn III’s construction feels beefy and road ready. Marshall says 38% of it is from recycled material, a well-hidden feature to me. If Marshall didn’t announce it I’d never have guessed. The controls and front and rear grills are metal. Oddly the only detectible plastic is the Marshall logo. A weird choice with everything else feeling premium. I don’t know what the frame is made of but it’s covered in “vegan leather.” As a portable device, I question if that material can handle the punishment that comes with portability. But then again, this is the 3rd iteration of this model and it looks like it’s worked out fine all these years. Sonically, this is a genuine stereo unit with two 2” drivers and a 4” woofer. It’s notable because there’s a lot of sheepish speakers dressed like wolves but possess just a single driver. Now I don’t confuse the Kilmore III’s channel separation with a proper home stereo, but it beats mono every day. In keeping with the Kilmore III’s burly build, it’s IP54 rated dust and water resistance and pool or mountain side ready. That means a product can handle water splashes, a brief light rain, or moderate dust. To be clear, the speaker is not sealed so bathing it in large quantities of either will not end well but it should be robust otherwise. No truly portable device is complete without a handle so a removable one top covered in vegan leather to match the speaker and dark red faux suede on the bottom is included. I found the faux suede “icky” feeling so I reversed it so the vegan leather is on the bottom/palm side. (I included a picture for visual reference). Any strap with slits can also be substituted. The Kilburn III rocks an electric guitar riff on power up, a not-so-subtle clue about its nature, and pumps me up. This is a speaker that begs to party. Before taking the stage it must be paired to your device. The optional, but free, Marshall app makes it easy, but you can also do it manually on your device. I appreciate the app is not mandatory. It also makes the Kilburn III obsolete proof. If you choose the app no obnoxious registration is required to get the speaker working. The app does request it and also permission to have “anonymous” data sent to Marshall, but both can be skipped. However, be vigilant because the option to “skip” is obscured. The app has three main functions. 1. Firmware updates, which is self-explanatory. 2. Battery management options, which by the way, this function, by default, limits the Kilburn III’s max battery charge to 90%. So, when you full charge your speaker and the app reports it’s at 90% that’s why. You can change to 100% but it’s not advised, similar to your cell phone battery. And finally, #3 the custom equalizer. There are also a few pre-sets too. While you can adjust bass and treble on the speaker itself, you’ll need the app if you want to set specific frequency ranges. There’s also a feature to automatically adjust sound placement if the speaker is in a corner WARM UP ACT OR MAIN EVENT? Everyone loves features, but sound is what’s paramount. Of course, everyone’s ears and genres, even artists within a genre differ like spots on a giraffe. Still, in the endeavor to get a thumbnail sketch of the Kilmore III’s strengths and weaknesses, I sampled music from Beethoven to Big Band Jazz to The Beatles and Beyond. I also listened to a couple podcasts to hear its spoken voice performance. All the music was ripped from CD, encoded at AAC 320kbps and streamed from my iPhone 15 Pro Max. The podcasts were streamed from Apple’s Podcast app. After playing various genres over a couple days I detected a common thread. The Kilburn III, while competent playing softly it doesn’t come to life until volume is 33%. Between 40-60% of top volume is the sweet spot where the bass sounds authentic to the song and the music has an emotional sway. Distortion starts creeping in after 60% and, at least to my ears, it’s unlistenable after 75%. I note these tiers because, like I said, this is a speaker that want to make noise. It’s good, not great at being a background speaker, as some are. A great background speaker presents strong bass and mids even at low volumes. The Kilburn at low volume mutes these to the point they are not entirely flat but also not engaging. That said, even at low volume vocals – even Bob Dylan and late career Leonard Cohen, are clear. On the other hand, in the middle of the Kilburn’s volume range it’s a small room filling dynamo. The bass is pointed and expressive and gets me moving or at least gets me to pull out the air guitar. But that’s not to the detriment of the mids or highs. It doesn’t trade one for the other like some other speakers do. It’s just one great rocking package… or jazz club, symphony, whatever you like. I don’t need to say it, but I will, it can’t be an audiophile speaker and doesn’t pretend to be. It’s just a small portable powerhouse. That’s inside. Outside performance is going to hinge on uncontrollable external noise. I live on a moderate traffic street – tens of cars per minute, more during rush. So that is where I tested this aspect. Street noise with cars zooming by registered 66 dB, which is typical for an urban setting. I had to crank the Kilburn III to about 70% to overcome this level of external noise and hear the speaker. Even then the background noise mingles with the speaker sounds. Bottomline here, this speaker likes to party but it’s not a party speaker. Know the noise level of where you’ll likely use the Kilburn III before buying. Spoken word on this speaker is much more sensitive to the source’s production values and very much garbage-in, garbage-out. The equalizer can help if the sound is too tinny. But really, the Kilburn III is designed for music; spoken word is a bonus. Spoken word playback quality here is the reverse of music. With spoken work the sound is best under 30% max volume, rather than above it, and distortion starts creeping in around 40%. Listening at these low volumes is clear and loud enough though for a small 100-200 sq ft area. IN SUM I’ll conclude where I started. The Kilburn III’s handsome look and premium built is probably its biggest differentiator and reason to buy vs anything else. It’s sound ranges from capable to outstanding depending on where the volume dial is. It’s certainly feature rich, but noticeably lacks Wi-Fi.

Marshall For Music
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.[PROS] Supreme Battery Life: The battery life of this speaker is unmatched when compared to similar products. I have yet the drain the battery fully and have even managed to charge my phone fully without issue. Stellar Design: The Kilburn III was designed in an excellent way in every category. Physically, it has a sturdy body and carrying strap. It was also able to withstand the splashes of water I threw in its direction. Aesthetically, the black and gold compliment each other greatly with the metal finish. Finally, the interface contains all of the functionality that I can adjust on the fly without my phone. Rich Bass: Sound quality is great all around, but the bass stands out. It's not the strongest but does very impressive given the stature of the speaker. Intuitive App: The Marshall companion app is very lightweight and simple to use. I'm able to set my EQ profiles and tweak settings without having to get lost in a web of menus. [CONS] Limited Ports: Unfortunately, the Kilburn III only has two ports: In/Out USB C and Line-In port. I was hoping to be able to utilize for additional functionality, but I'll have to settle. [CONCLUSION] The Kilburn III is an excellent speaker for home use and on the go. With great sound and an extreme battery life, it's a great addition to bring fun to any environment. I would highly recommend it.

Great Quality Speaker but Lacking Sound Quality
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a speaker that works perfectly, easy to use, but lacks that perfect sound quality. This is a nice looking speaker. Build Quality: The build quality is impeccable in that everything has a nice feeling to it with high quality materials, feels tight, and is pleasing to look at. It also comes with a nice strap that makes it easy to carry. It is a little heavy though, but not too bad. Pairing: Pairing this to my phone really could not have been easier. I already had the Marshall app installed on my phone from my headphones and that helped, so installing the app first is the way to go. I turned on the speaker which automatically went into pairing mode. The app automatically came up on my phone and asked me if I wanted to pair the speaker to my phone. I said yes and that was it. Connection done. I assume that if you don’t already have the app installed, it would be more of a manual operation. I also have not had any connection (or disconnection) problems so far and it works when my phone is in the basement and the speaker is in the bedroom on the second floor. Sound Quality: This is where things are lacking a little. It has very strong clear bass, however, the mids and highs are not so clear and strong. If having a lot of bass is important, this will probably fit the bill, but if you are looking for a flat EQ curve, you might be disappointed. There are ways of adjusting the EQ, but it doesn’t have much effect. Based on this speaker and my Marshall headphones, it seems they prioritize bass over everything else. Controls: All the controls are on the top of the unit. You can set the volume, bass, and treble using your standard knobs. There is a power toggle switch, with a ten-segment battery indicator. This is great in that you can really know with a lot of accuracy how much battery is left. There are controls to start/stop playing and fast forward and rewind. There is also an “M” button that you can change function within the app. All controls work great and are easy to use except for the treble and bass knobs which feel nice but don’t have much effect. The back has a USB-C port for charging and a 1/8” aux jack. The app: The app is simple but has everything you need in it. All controls in the app work as expected. There is a five band EQ with 6 presets. While the EQ works, it does not provide enough change to make the music sound perfect. It also has a setting called placement compensation where you can enable it if the speaker is close to a wall. All it seems to do is increase the bass so I’m not sure why this is useful. The “M” button’s function can be changed such as setting the EQ preset. It can listen to broadcasts, but when I go to that page, it says it is searching but never finds anything. I use this for streaming Amazon music and Google music and those work fine. One great feature of this is that battery save mode that you can enable which only allows the battery to change to 90%. All rechargeable devices should have this setting. You can update the firmware through the app as well as set the time the before unit should go into standby if there is no music playing. Summary: This speaker works great, looks great, feels great and has great bass. The mids and highs are lacking so you have to decide how important that is to you versus the strong bass. Unfortunately, there were no settings I could find to really correct for this. If that is not so important, you will not be disappointed in this speaker at all.

Marshall Rhythmic Rock Power House Goes Anywhere
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Marshall name is well established since Jim Marshall built his first amp in 1962. Many powerful amps & speakers proudly bear the Marshall name ever since. The latest speaker is the Kilburn III, a monumental upgrade from the Kilburn II. It measures 10-3/4"W x 6-3/4"H x 6"D, weighs 6.2 lbs. & is available in black w/ brass for the classic Marshall look, or cream. Both include a leather hand strap. Featuring a replaceable Li-ion battery rated to deliver up to 50 hours of music; charge with industry standard USB-C & even power your phone using the potent battery. This portable powerhouse delivers 50 watts of audio! A 30 watt Class D amp powers the 4" woofer & 2) 10 watt amps each power 2" full-range speakers producing a 45-20,000 Hz frequency response. It ROCKS!! I am most impressed by the Dynamic Loudness feature that alters the equalization to maintain the same balance as you change the volume! Set the EQ with the free Marshall amp, then choose various curves directly with the "M" pushbutton. Kilburn III is Auracast compatible, so you can connect it wirelessly with other Auracast compatible speakers to fill a room with multiple speakers. CONCLUSION: The latest Bluetooth 5.3 lets you stream from approximately 32.8'. Kilburn III is the top-of-the-line portable speaker with rockin' sound & looks that draw a crowd & easily earns my highest recommendation.

Vintage Look and Tactility with Hi-Fi Sound
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Retro portable elegance, Marshall continues to infuse modern technology with nostalgic aesthetic and truly delivers where it matters, in sound. The Marshall Kilburn III is a portable speaker with high-fidelity sound that can be taken anywhere whilst providing a tactile experience like those of days-gone-by. ~Quality of Product~ The Marshall Kilburn III is made of high-quality material that highlights Marshall’s iconic black, red, and brass look. The power lever is made of etched metal that provides a satisfying click when switching on/off. The knobs are surrounded by a soft rubber and give pleasing soft stops at every interval. The strap is wide and robust with a velvety red underside that softens the grip while carrying it. It weights 6.17lbs and because of its shape and weight it feels clunky to carry. ~Functionality and Features~ The knobs allow for easily customizing the bass, treble and volume. You can easily see the setting with the lights so there is no guesswork trying to figure out where it is at any given time. The M-buttons toggles through presets that could be set through the app. The switch is used for skipping forward and backtracking. Additionally, the battery level is easy to gauge with a light-up meter next to the power button. This speaker is rated IP54 dust and water-resistant, meaning it can handle a bit of dust and water splashes without damage. It can be used as a power bank to charge up a phone if needed as well. It is comprised of a 4-inch woofer and two 2-inch full-range speakers. ~Sound~ Marshall is renowned for their sound quality and this speaker continues their legacy by provided high-fidelity, dynamic sound. It is crystal clear and transparent, playing all the notes melodiously and allowing the listener to hear the sound as it was meant to be heard, every note presented beautifully. The bass is rich and resonant while retaining harmony with the rest of the music. I listen to a variety of genres and all sound wonderfully balanced in this speaker. It can get exceptionally loud for its size and has a wide soundstage. ~App~ The speaker can be controlled via Bluetooth through the Marshall app, which provides the ability to remotely change the equalizer, presets, allows for placement compensation, and several other settings. I already had the app because I have another Marshall device, and it found and connected to the speaker quickly. The app is intuitive to use with a streamlined layout. ~Battery Life~ It takes 3 hours to charge for 50 hours of playtime and, when needed, can quick charge for 20 minutes, providing 8 hours of playtime. ~Conclusion~ The Marshall Kilburn III is an amazing Bluetooth portable speaker that integrates nostalgic elegance with powerful, balanced sound. Its long battery life and robust composition allow it to be taken and used in a plethora of environments, and its tactile buttons and knobs take all the guess work out of setting the equalizer. This is a great speaker to immerse yourself in music with.

Exceptional
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A couple of years ago I got the Marshall Action 3, and I absolutely love it. I use it in my office daily. Now, I wanted/needed a high quality portable. I like the Action 3 so much I started researching the latest Marshall products (I have two other similar BT speakers with brand names that start with 'S'). I'd looked at the Kilburn 2 a few months ago, and decided I could not deal with the decreased power output (36w vs 60w of Action 3). So I was ecstatic to see that the Kilburn 3 had a 80 watt amp. Compared to the other BT speakers that are about this size, one does not have an Aux input, as Kilburn 3 does. The Kilburn is slightly more expensive than the other two (not much). I did some quick side by side comparisons. This Kilburn III, was far better than the one from a well known Japanese manufacturer. The Marshall's bass and mids were much more well rounded, fuller, richer. Its high's are similar, both very pleasing, the Marshall's has a wider soundstage. Compared to the American "S" brand, which has a room tuning tool, the Marshall's bass was again fuller. But the mid's/voices of the Marshall were not quite as precise. But to be fair the room tuning tool of the American brand adjusts, equalizes the speaker based on the room's acoustics. The application that comes with the Marshall speaker is pretty primitive, it lets you choose the 'Marshall sound profile' or you can use an included 5 band equalizer for a custom curve, or some saved presets. The Kilburn has a button to select one or the other. You can also turn the bass/treble knobs from the app. Both of the other speakers have more sophisticated apps. Marshall's EQ is an improvement to their app. For years I've used an iPhone app called 'Equalizer Pro', it provides a sophisticated graphic/parametric equalizer. Using this I could dial in a better tone curve that I could get from either of the other speakers. So with the appropriate sound tool, I found the Kilburn better filled the room with a better sound than either of the other speakers. Marshall claims that the Kilburn 3 has a play time of 50 hours. This I did not verify. But I'm getting this speaker to travel with, and to use outdoors. The Marshall Kilburn III has an IP54 rating for water and dust resistance. This means it can withstand splashes of water and some dust, making it suitable for outdoor use, but it is not fully waterproof, an improvement over the Action 3, and this is the same as the 'S' brands. So out the door I went. I started listening to Boston's first album. I was about 15 feet from the speaker with the speaker close to a wall (I set this in the Marshall app). 'More than a Feeling', sounded quite airy, the speaker seemed to bounce the high's around. Quite pleasant. The bass was a little thin, so I adjusted the bass via the knob on the speaker, and that muddled the mids. I used the equalizer I mentioned before to kick up the bass from 40hz to 120hz about 8db, and what a difference. Another boost from 1k to 2k and the mid-high's from the speaker were much improved. As Boston's 'Foreplay' switches to 'Long Time', and the rhythm picks up, and the speaker sounds very sweet, very easy to listen to. Pretty superb. The bass of 'Smokin' was ok for a smallish speaker, I didn't expect chest thumping bass, and I didn't get it but it had a very even tone, just what I wanted. I was listening with the speaker turned up to 6, and it was plenty loud. But turning it up to 8 it was really loud (I expected to see my neighbors poke their head over my wall), far louder than my Japanese "S" brand could go, and a bigger, deeper bass. I then listened to some DSOTM, 'Money' sounded amazing, a little bass light but the midrange and highs were awesome. 'Us and Them' had a nice presence, the nuances of the girls' voices had a surprisingly good stereo separation. And the subtle voices in 'Brain Damage' and 'Eclipse' were superb. All and all this is an excellent speaker, the software they provide is somewhat deficient, but this is easily remedied. The bass and treble knobs do boost those frequencies, but depending on your listening environment some additional help will yield better results. This is exactly what a parametric equalizer is intended to do, help get the best sound possible out of a good speaker. Marshall's Kilburn III is a real winner, I've found my new travel companion!

Worthy of the Marshall name
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’ll confess up front that I have been a Marshall fan for decades. I have been playing Marshall guitar amplifiers for years, so when they decided to go into the consumer electronics market, I was excited to see what they would come up with. I have always loved the Marshall logo and aesthetic. It all started when I was a kid and constantly saw their amplifiers being played on stage by all of my favorite bands. Something about the loud wall of sound they produced mixed with the iconic look had me drawn in hook line and sinker as far back as I can remember. Enter modern day and I still have and play Marshall amplifiers, but now I also have Bluetooth speakers, and headphones that are worthy of holding the iconic Marshall logo. *** SOUND QUALITY *** The single most important aspect of any audio device is the sound it can produce. I am happy to report that, just as with my other Marshall products, this Bluetooth speaker sounds great while also being extremely portable, battery powered, and even dust and moisture resistant. The app offers users complete EQ customization options, as well as a dedicated “M” button to cycle between two of your favorite EQ settings. While this is a pretty cool feature to have on the unit itself, instead of menu diving in an app, I do find myself simply leaving the EQ in the classic stock Marshall setting. To me, this setting sounds the most balanced for the types of music I listen to daily, which makes sense because I am sure Marshall has voiced this unit to sound its best with all bands flat. I have owned several Bluetooth speakers in the past and the Marshall Kilburn III is among the best I have had for sound quality. The Kilburn is a fully stereo unit and there are speakers located in both the front and the back, which Marshall claims gives users a 360 stereophonic sound spectrum with no bad spots around the unit. When placing the speaker on a table in the middle of the room, such as a coffee table, the Kilburn does a great job of filling the room with sound in all directions. As with most Marshall products, they market them to be loud and proud. While the Marshall Kilburn III is plenty loud for its size, I do find that it’s best to keep the volume at 3 o’clock max. Pushing it to 10 on the dial does introduce a bit of distortion, which is kind of a bummer. This one definitely can’t go to 11, if you know what I mean. That said, I do like the stereophonic sound spectrum this speaker produces at reasonable volume levels and pushing it up to 75% (or 3 o’clock), is still very clear, and quite loud. *** BUILD QUALITY & AESTHETIC *** As with all of the Marshall consumer products, the build quality is excellent. For lack of a better term, this speaker is built like a tank. With the dust and water resistance, it feels like it will last a very long time. The knobs on top look like guitar amplifier knobs and have a slight click with each incremental turn. While this is really great attention to detail, there are actually 11 increments (and red LED lights) for each knob, going from 0-10 respectively. I feel like Marshall missed a naturally huge opportunity to make the knobs go from 1-11, or even 0-11. Yes, another Spinal Tap reference. Come on Marshall! The texture of the covering and the black and gold aesthetic is all there, and all classic Marshall. I also own the new Marshall headphones and they match this speaker in build and look. Whether I am bringing this speaker to a party, or camping, or wearing their headphones while grocery shopping, the Marshall look is front and center and fits my style perfectly. *** BATTERY LIFE *** After initially fully charging the speaker, I have used it extensively for a few days and haven’t even used half of the battery life. Marshall claims up to 50 hours, but I am guessing that is in a perfect scenario with a stable temperature and a modest listening level. Any way you slice it, if I can use it for hours a day without recharging, that is plenty for my needs. *** THE APP *** Marshall offers an app that lets users update firmware, set custom EQ settings, battery performance, and standby timeout settings. It will even let you listen to broadcasts, but I have not been able to find any when searching. It is a pretty basic app, but very much needed in case there is a firmware update. *** WOULD I CHANGE ANYTHING? *** Why yes, yes I would. This speaker sounds amazing on its own, but it would sound even better if you could use TWO Kilburn speakers in stereo. Whether you own two Kilburn III’s, or any previous Kilburn model, I think it would be nice for them to figure out how to make the app be able to see multiple Marshall speakers, to either sync, or use in a stereo situation. While I am not sure this is even possible, I honestly believe it should be. Perhaps we will see this in a future update, but until then, that is the sole reason I gave the Marshall Kilburn III a four star rating. *** IN CONCLUSION *** The Marshall Kilburn is yet another great product by the guys across the pond. As a lifelong fan of Marshall products, I am happy that they are now occupying the consumer electronics market space, and I will be eager to see what they come up with next.

EXCELLENT BT Speaker
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In Summary, the Marshall Kilburn III is the best Bluetooth speaker that I own. Fit & finish is perfect; high quality construction and materials throughout. The controls are intuitive and provide visual confirmation via the red LED lights. The app is great; it works well and is simple to use. Of course, the bass booms if you'd like and overall sound is clear and crisp. There are no compromises between sound quality, design, and function. They've done an exceptional job here; I'm truly happy with this product! SOUND The unit has a bass reflex cabinet. The sound is envelopes you, as it comes out the front and rear grilles, so you don't miss the music due to where you are located in relation to the unit. It sounds great; I like having the equilizer on the app as well as the 'M' button. Even at a low setting, the bass can be pretty powerful. At top volume and top bass, the sound can be bad, but I was trying to find 'that point'; I would not expect that during normal use. The sound is very clear. The cabinet is solid enoughto handle the 50W this unit can produce. Classical, Country, Rap / Hip-Hop, or electronic music, the sound is predictable and is not distorted at all. It doesn't matter if you are standing near the front grille or rear grille either. CONTROLS The controls on top of the cabinet are very solidly built with metal. The Volume, Bass, and Treble dials have rubber one the outside where your fingers would contact them, so you're always able to adjust them, even with wet fingers. The Power switch is large and prominent, and has cross-hatching one its cylindrical perimeter. The top of the Volume switch, as well as the 'M' (Marshall) and Bluetooth buttons, have raised concentric circles on the tops. During playback, one press of the Play / Pause button pauses the music; re-start playback with a second press. Pushing the Play / Pause button to the left acts to re-start the current track or skip to previous tracks, while a push to the right skips to the next track. Instead of black painted-on tick marks for the Volume, Bass, and Treble dials, red LED indicators are used, which I absolutely love. It's a very nice touch. The 'M' button cycles through each of three graphic equalizer settings; 'Marshall' is pre-set and gives a warm sound. The remaining two can be programmed with the genres, or can be customized by you, per your preference. The BT button is used to pair with a device. APP You pair the Kilburn III to the phone / tablet in Settings. If you are new to Marshall, just download the Marshall app, create an account, and add the Kilburn III to the app. The app allows you to set the equilizer, select the source (if you have multiple Marshall products), and control balance and volume. It also allows you to update the firmware of the Kilburn III. The app is simple to use, and it just works without errors. POWER The unit charges fully in ~3 hours via USB-C and lasts a very long time; the same USB-C port can be used to charge your tablet or cell phone. The battery in this speaker is replaceable, which is not something I've seen before. The red LED battery power indicator is to the left of the Power switch, and is a series of red LED vertical bars used to represent battery charge. OTHER ---The carrying handle has black leather on the top, and is pre-installed. A deep red suede-like material is on the underside that gives a great deal of grip, even with wet hands. Both ends of the handle are secured by a button, similar to a shirt; I actually turned the handle around, as the red suede sort of matches the red LED indicators on the top. ---The rubber feet on the bottom are thick and wide, so the speaker stays in place even with heavier base. ---The USB-C cord that came in the box is about 6' long.
