Customers are saying

Customers regard the Cassette Player with AM/FM Radio as easy to use and appreciate its portability and inclusion of AM/FM radio functionality. However, many customers express concerns about the sound quality and the reliability of the cassette player mechanism itself. Some also find the price to be high for the perceived quality of the product. Additional issues were noted with the battery compartment and the lack of a rewind function.

Not the greatest but you can take what you get

MP3/Ipod players have pretty much taken over the portable music market. Anything with a cassette in it is extremely hard to find. I went into my Best Buy and was surprised to find these. There are some here that complained about the tape playing like the Chipmunks. I found that I had to press on the door near where the heads are and the tapes play correctly. To comment on another product sold online here, avoid the Jensen-branded radio-cassette for 14.95. I bought one at another store which lasted a week. . This one looks more sturdy but not up to the quality of the old ones but you can take what you can get.

I thought that this would be a decent product since Memorex is a respected name, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Not only did it not work - couldn't hear the radio, not even static - the headphone jack only worked for the first few minutes if I used all my might to hold it in. The tape player didn't work at all, even with two different sets of brand new batteries. Not only all that, but I could immediately tell that it was very cheaply made. The dial for the volume was very difficult to turn, as if it wasn't installed correctly. The buttons for the tape player were crooked. It was almost impossible to install the batteries because of the poor design. What a waste!! Thank God Best Buy instantly refunded my money. And I found a perfect tape player at Goodwill for less than this piece of dung.

Probably the worst purchase I have ever made

I went to Best Buy because I assumed they would have a decent portable cassette player. They only had one model: Memorex MD 2280. I knew that at $28 it was probably not going to be something I'd listen to opera on, but I just needed a basic cassette player that could play books on tape reasonably well(someone had given me a bunch). OMG! This thing was garbage right out of the box. Utter garbage. It felt like it was held together with chewing gum. Neither the battery compartment nor the tape compartment fully opened. And the tapes played at 2 or 3 times the appropriate speed, making them sound like chipmunks. Pure garbage. I will be going to to Best Buy tomorrow to get a refund. And never, ever again will I buy a Memorex product.

great cassette player to burn in fireplace

Just shows to go ya, a big name don't mean squat. All I wanted was something to play tapes on at the gym, so I could work out and not be bored to tears. Worse than no music is when it's uneven speed. Gevalt! It's also very hard to get tape in and out, esply while working out. And there's no fast-forward: how pathetic is that?! I now have big questions about Best Buy; judgment is not so great, guys. And I'll buy Memorex again when the messiah arrives.

I took a chance on this item as I have about 400 cassettes from my early music days that I would really love to be able to listen to. It simply did not play any of them -- either the machine simply didn't play and automatically stopped, it played too slow or it played too fast. I've never seen a product created that was simply garbage! I didn't expect great quality but this was a shock. Unfortunately, I didn't keep the receipt or packing materials to return it.

This is great for what it's made to do. It plays my cassettes perfectly & I'm able to listen to the radio stations that I like. If you don't compare it to the modern day gadgets that are available for music these days, you'll appreciate this gem. Great purchase. =)

I never thought that Memorex will make something so cheap and useless. You cannot even insert the batteries (not included and tried my store customer service). Also the volume bottom was defective. DON'T BUY IT! Best Buy should remove this junk from its website.

I bought this cassette player reluctantly. I had wanted a different brand but this was all there was. My son had to put the batteries into it for me, it was so difficult to open, and I found the operating button to be so stiff and clumsy that I gave up and took it back. I did play one tape in it and was not satisfied with the sound quality. It is cheap plastic and not well made.

I generally read reviews before I buy any product. This, however, was an impulse buy, possibly my last one ever when it comes to electronics. I can't overstate how useless this thing is. It looks OK in the package, but really starts to reveal its cheapness once it's unwrapped. Cassettes don't fit properly, the cover won't close all the way, volume and tuning wheels feel alternately wobbly and like they're grinding on something, and–most importantly–cassettes play at AT LEAST double speed. The radio works OK, but that's not why I bought this thing. They ask if I would recommend this product to a friend. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend this heap to an enemy. Avoid! As for me, I think I'm stuck with it, as my receipt seems to have disappeared.

I bought this today to listen to books on cassette a friend lent me. It's absolutely HORRIBLE. It speeds up and sounds like chipmunks talking and noise from the earphones is worse than intense. Piece of junk. Junk. Do not buy. I repeat. Do not buy.

    Chipmunk Casette player

My son really wanted this and against my better judgement, I thought I'd give it a try. (Even though it had gotten bad reviews.) Best Buy: Please find a better product to carry as your only personal cassette player...please! Kids are again becoming interested in casettes due to the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and the use of one by the main character, "Star Lord". There is likely a larger market for a decent player, if one was offered. Thanks! As for this one, it started playing tapes at a very high pitch after the first day. Just like others have said. So it's a bad design-- no doubt about it. Tried several tapes. It is the player! Very disappointed.

This doesn't even deserve a star! What a horrible waste of time & money!! I purchased one in Madison, WI (for a Christmas present) & it plays EVERYTHING fast forward. Everything sounds like chipmunks. So I exchanged it to a different store (Davenport, IA) & this one DOES THE SAME THING!!! Don't waste your money on this at all! I've called both stores & they are both removing them from the shelves (or so they said). If you buy one, don't say I didn't warn you!

I have bought and returned 3 of these cassette players. Everything you read in the other 1 & 2 star reviews is true. This is a complete piece of garbage. When it does play a tape, it sounds awful. Don't buy.

I can't say for sure that the old cassette tape I tried to play was in the best condition but ... it dragged badly and The Low Spark of High Heel Boys was unrecognizable. The radio reception was marginally better but still quite poor.

Looks nice--and that's the only good thing about this piece of garbage, Intermittently speeds up, then slows down. Skips a lot. AM radio only OK. FM gets horrible reception . This is not worthy to be sold in Best Buy. It should be sold in a 99 cent store--and it would be OVERPRICED there!
