You pay less up front, but if you keep it installed a long time, you're better off paying the higher amount up front - but with the subscription, you're at least getting the most recent version.

Then if the Internet is down my information can't be reached. We also don't know if Microsoft will charge for storing data at some point in the future.

I wish it was one and done kind of purchase as my old laptop came with Office without having to renew it.
