It gives the option of upgrading to the next version with out a lot of cost or purchasing the current version for way less than other retailers.

In any case, I purchased the software for my father's new laptop, so time will tell whether this subscription service makes sense or not...

I wish there was a less expensive version because there are several features that I never use that I'm sure drive the price up. Basically all I need are Outlook and Word.
