It is automatic.

Selected this annual, 365 subscription to maintain updates and compatible files. Was easy to perform update per included instructions from Geek Squad.

Also I don't like the fact that you have to subscribe and pay every year but I guess if you want to use the latest software it works out.

Best buy needs to be sure to activate before shipping & also needs to make sure employees are trained better.

Then the salesperson convinced me to try Office 365. I'm glad I tried it. I have access to everything on my iPhone now and also have cloud storage for my files. A nice feature.

I believe it's only a one year subscription though. This is my fault for not researching properly. I'm familiar with these programs so I expect a good product.

With this feedback, Microsoft came out with Office 365 (subscription based only) versions and Office 2016 versions sold at a one-time retail price and you own it forever. You know how it goes old programs do not talk to new computers. Do not want to be a conspiracy theorist, however seems like Planned obsolescence. The program is great.

I wish I had bought the version I could load on to my computer instead of pulling from the internet. It's not convenient when I don't have internet access. Guess I'm kind of an old style girl and prefer to have my software readily accessible.
