Converted old MS Office 2003 documents fine

We'd read online that we might be unable to convert Office 2003 documents. It sounded like we'd need to convert the documents to Office 2007 before 2013 would be able to convert. However, the Office 2003 documents "converted" fine on our new HP 23-d284 (Envy 23' All-in-One), and even the Excel documents are "updateable" after conversion.
