Wrong product for Mac purchased in late 2017

Downloaded Office 2016 as directed by the card but it turned out to be incompatible with my Mac! Had to call MS support number on the card, and they told me that it would cost an additional $150 to download the correct version of Office! Wish someone would have explained it to me at the store.
