Quiet Fast Sleek but Expensive
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I Love it.. you can even flip it more than one way for the tablet mode. 1. Laptop 2. Tablet only (remove it from keyboard) 3. Tablet w/ keyboard (remove it then reattach turning it around) this way you get the full 12 hours. Sometimes trouble reconnecting but that's expected.

Monumentally Overrated
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am coming from using a history of Macs, and bought the Surface Book based on reviews of long battery life and performance. I have now had this laptop for 7 months and it is probably one of the worst purchases I've ever made. Half the time I go to use it, the thing doesn't turn on. I've updated, tried shutting it down, putting it to sleep, etc. and it just feels like a big piece. Now to try and get a replacement, when I'd much rather have a refund. Never had these kind of problems with a laptop before, and this is a premium unit. Look up the issue, or long term reviews of surface products. Pretty common and persistent.

Very versatile
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a fast reliable laptop / tablet hybrid. It was a good deal with the college credit. I only wish Microsoft would make a few options for screen sizes.

A terrible product in the end
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Now that I've had the surface book for a year, I can say it is ultimately a terrible product. Although I liked it at first, I am glad I didn't write a review then. Windows is still an idiosyncratic operating system. The surface book freezes up, doesn't see Bluetooth devices, or is inconsistent at best. And I have even had to do a complete hard drive swipe and reload of Windows. Now the headphone jack isn't working. And you know you're dealing with a bad product when they can't fix it. It doesn't connect to other printers as easily as Mac; and don't even get me started on Microsoft Scan. What a joke. The stylus and ability to draw on the tablet is cool. And if the rest of the computer and operating system worked well, it would be great. But Microsoft just can not get it all right. It would be nice if the Surface Book worked as advertised and as well as any reasonable person should expect. But after a year, I can tell you that it does not. Save yourself the aggravation and get a MacBook. They're not perfect either. But my friends have FAR less problems with their Mac laptops then I have with this Surface Book.

Good mobile computer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Works well as a mobile computing platform, functions as both a tablet and a laptop. I purchased this device to act as a laptop replacement and it works well when used everywhere except docked and with another monitor. The scaling for the 2nd monitor is consistently inconsistent and requires settings changes when the 2nd monitor is either too large or too small to read easily. Per the Microsoft support pages and forums this is a known issue. I hope this will get fixed soon.

Great for work and play
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My only problem with this product is that sometimes my screen will start to turn gray and the computer will be unresponsive for a couple seconds, but then all function returns. Kind of a weird problem, but I know two people with the same laptop and they don't experience this problem.

On my second try, considering return
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was planning to buy a Dell inspiron 2 in 1 -- looking for a laptop because I prefer using them but figured I would try the dual functionality. While in the store I was sold on the much more expensive Microsoft Surface Book (base model - i5 with 128g drive and 8g memory). My first book had a dead pixel and some really wonky battery life (less than four hours total with minimal use -- which is worse than my three year old laptop). It also had some issues with making wireless connections. Anyway, Best Buy took that one back and I exchanged it for a new one which has basically been a lot better. I'm getting about seven or eight hours of battery life on web browsing with a quick recharge, and it holds a charge overnight (which my first one didn't). I'm getting a windows (I think) bug where it stays in sleep mode and won't turn on for several hours and 10+ attempts. But then it does wake up as if nothing happened. If that bug continues after the next rounds of updates, I may return this one. It's overall a nice machine to work with. I wish it opened a little further. The screen is crystal clear when it's bright enough, but it does some funky things with auto-adjust screen brightness. The feel of the machine is great. It does get pretty hot on the screen. It is reasonably fast for web browsing and basic word processing. I haven't put it through the motions for heavier processing. So overall, I'm pleased with it when it's working, but if I do have to return this one for the sleeping/startup issues, I'll probably go with another brand.

Get Incident protection plan
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have had my Surface Book for about a week now and I can tell you that the functionality is great. That is the only reason I gave this more than 1 star. I am the kind of person that wouldn't buy the Geek Squad plan because I am good with computers and there is nothing that I would have to ask a Geek Squad member. The problem is that in order to get incident protection you have to get the 2 to 4 hundred dollar plan which seems outrageous. This product is brittle. It is like a delicate flower that must be cared for and babied. I use mine for what it is designed for.. A computer that is also a TABLET. It took one drop from a short distance and the screen shattered and the corner of the tablet dented. Since Microsoft doesn't fix their own products I am stuck with having a $1500 computer with a shattered screen. Also note that if you want to use this without the keyboard very much the battery will drain very fast. You only get about an hour of use before it starts warning you to charge it. As for the pen.. I don't know if mine was a fluke but the battery that it came with died in about 3 days and it takes AAAA batteries so it is not generally something that a person keeps around the house. In conclusion, please, if you purchase one of these plan on spending the extra money for the protection plan so you can get your computer replaced WHEN it breaks because if you use it, it will.
