I have been using my surface book for a little over a month now and have been quite pleased. Upon unboxing it was definitely not without some headache, the graphics kept crashing and the laptop failed to reboot after updates. However, after the required updates processed all has been excellent. Rips through everyday IT work with ease and the windows 10 pro runs flawlessly with eveything I have hooked up or downloaded. Excellent work laptop for someone in the tech field such as myself that travels around and also does remote work without any slowdowns.

First, my Best Buy experience was a bust. I tried the buy online, pickup in store option. Buyers be warned, there is a strange delay between the online order process and pickup times. Regardless of the fact that the stock is showing as available at the store location. I arrived at the store and the Best Buy employee simply said: “You need to wait until the item is released from our system, I can't help you.” I pushed the issue, he looked it up, found the order but since it was not "released" he could not give me the Surface Book. There was no effort to problem solve. The employee just stared at me. I solved the problem for him by cancelling the online order and walking to the back to pick up the Surface Book myself. YaY! Then I get to listen to the sales pitch for extended warranty immediately followed by do you want a Best Buy credit card and save on this purchase. It's all these annoying interactions that I was trying to avoid in the first place.
Second, the Surface Book is just ok. As a tablet, the touch sensors will leave you longing for an Apple product and the laptop is nicely powered by does not justify the cost. The pen is nice but, it has nowhere to live so, I am 3 weeks in and already on my second pen. Which is slightly irritating because I can't really figure out a good reason to use it except for my kids to playing Fresh Paint. The Adobe products that are pen-aware were promising as well but I don’t feel like the device has the precision to be seriously useful beyond a novelty.
TLDR:
BEST BUY- Online buy, in-store pickup: Great idea, poorly executed.
SURFACE BOOK - is an above average (good) laptop and below average tablet.

I was looking for an all around exceptional computer as I enter college. I wanted a computer that would be capable of handling engineering programs as well as be good for typical every day use and writing papers. After looking at many different computers I narrowed it down to this and a 15" MacBook Pro. They both came out to about the same price. Many peoples online reviews showed that the fully loaded 15" MacBook Pro was faster than this surface book but this should be able to handle everything I need it to and is widely more versitile. It is jam packed with cool and convenient features that the Mac lacks. For such a similar price, the surface book has more to offer. The MacBook Pro is running on old processors and is planning to update with a touch bar to replace action keys. This is still ages behind the surface book with brand new processors and a touch screen with pen. If price is an obstacle, these features and this power is far from necessary. You can easily find capable laptops for much less. Pros: I love the camera on both sides, the keyboard is fantastic, mouse is good and has convenient shortcuts but is sometimes touchy, screen is excellent, battery is good, removable and reversible "clipboard" or screen is convenient and cool, pen is a huge bonus. I will be able to record lectures while looking at online PDFs or presentations and taking notes directly on them. Exceptional device, unparalleled by any. Surface book 2 will likely be even more refined. If possible I would hold out for that, but I needed a computer for this year.

I wanted to retire my old 17" laptop for something smaller, lighter and more "mobile". I also was jealous of my spouse's touch screen :-). The Surface Book was just the solution I was looking for. I thought that the screen size difference from my 17" would be difficult to work through but it hasn't been a problem at all. I find myself using the laptop more and more with the screen detached from the keyboard like a Surface Pro, but I'm still 90% attached. The small size and lighter weight... well the other day I picked up my Apple MacBook Pro and thought it was "gigantic" heavy and clunky.
Problems..... I found that the screen resolution caused some programs to be presented with extremely small fonts and hard to read. Using Google I found a solution to that so it really isn't a problem anymore. Also, being a former accountant I miss the 10 key numeric pad on the side of the 17" keyboard. That is still annoying....
End result is that I would never go back. Oh and I really like the touch screen too........ :-)

Video Editor here.
Gave the Surface Book Pro a chance over a mac book, at first I loved it. Boot up time is significantly short at around 10 seconds. Love the pen to do color corrections and design. Loved the touch screen and the transformability of the book.
However...
Many glitches kept me from keeping it an returned it for a MacBook for reliability....
Adobe Primere continuously glitchy and force closing... not sure if it was windows and the new version but it hindered my ability to get projects done.
Biggest problem was the glitch in which the surface book still thinks programs are running and you cannot detach the screen. you have to reboot the thing to just turn the screen around.... While this isnt the biggest issue in the world it was so frequent that it again hinders progress.
Maybe they will figure it out next time... Bummer.

The Microsoft Surface Book is a great Windows 10 Device. Since this is a first design for a new device there were some issues but Microsoft has worked hard to put out firmware and software updates to fix these issues.

After returning the device 4 times due to QC issues (screen backlight bleed, BSOD on initial setup, CPU temps in 80c while sitting idle ...), I found one that worked perfectly. The device is fast in terms of processing power, and the addition of the dGPU makes it even better. I can now run several programs that were near unusable on the HP Spectre that I replaced.

Bought this for my daily work computer to replace my desktop that stopped working. I purchased the dock as well and have many options for connectivity. This is one powerful computer. Everyone at work is jealous and wants one. Even though I just barely purchased this, I cannot wait to upgrade to Surface Book 2. I have had zero issues with mine. Looks like updates have resolved all known previous issues and this is now a really awesome function daily workhorse.

I bought the i7, 512gb with dedicated graphic card version and it was definitely a steep grab out of my pocket, but couldn't be happier. I take it everywhere, use it for everything; for work, gaming, watching movies.
The battery is okay, it lasts as long (at least 8 hours) as you'd expect when using it to the maximum.
The only but I have is that once in a while (once a month?) the screen goes black and I'll have to hard reboot in order to fix it.

Surface Book i7 quirky and slow

Purchased the Surface Book with I7, 16gig ram and 500gig drive. I purchased this very costly version for speed and it is light weight. I have found it appears to be slow for common tasks such as creating a new folder, copying files. Many times the Windows Explorer interface just simply stops "responding" for several minutes. Eventually forcing me to close it and try and again.
Would I purchase another Surface Book? Maybe when it has more ports, Microsoft improves the performance and when there are more apps from Microsoft. I use Android apps a lot but Microsoft does not have hardly any that are from the same companies.

Very happy with this machine. It handles everything I have thrown at it. It's a little flaky with dual monitors and the dock, but Microsoft has been active with patches and fixes.

I think this product works very well. As a laptop, the hinge is very solid, allowing you to adjust the angle of the screen in many ways. Battery life is strong and it runs fast. As a tablet, it's a little large, but the screen is thin enough that it's not unruly. I wish the battery as a tablet ran a little longer.

This laptop is really good and does what it is supposed to do. I purchased this laptop when it just came out. The number of issues this laptop had back than was enormous, and I had to return it back to Microsoft Store. However, several months later, I purchased it again and I think all these updates pushed by Microsoft actually worked and solved the majority of the problems that I had before (battery life, Microsoft Edge had pink color and would give me an Intel Driver problem almost every two minutes, attaching and detaching the tablet part of the product was a pain). Currently, I have one very annoying problem with "Hello" eye-detector feature. It works great for two-three days, then stops working (keeps saying Turning On the Camera), so I have to do troubleshooting very frequently. If you really need a laptop/want to show off and have an excess cash laying around, then go ahead and purchase this product. However, if you are patient and do not need an upgrade right away, I would wait for the second generation of the product. I am sure Microsoft will get rid of these small issues.
