Sleek, solid, lightweight laptop, good for travel
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is a sleek, beautiful laptop. It is very light, weighing in at 2.9 pounds. Not quite as light as the Go 2 model (2.5 pounds), but it has a 13.5" screen, compared to the Go 2's 12.4" screen. I used to use laptops with 15" screens and have decided that 13.5" is the optimal compromise between display area and overall laptop weight. The touchscreen is responsive and displays a beautiful picture. The sound is typical for laptops, clear and crisp in the high and midrange, but lacking in bass presence. You can turn up the volume and play audio very loud if you like. The keyboard/touchpad area is 12" wide and 8.5" in depth. Interestingly, the depth is about evenly split between the keyboard and 3" x 4.5" touchpad as opposed to devoting more space to the keyboard. The touchpad area is much larger than the 2" x 4" touchpad on my previous laptop, although it is not clear what the advantage of such a large touchpad might be. The keyboard is a good size and very solid and responsive. Typing and mouse navigation are a breeze. A cost of this sleek, light laptop is minimal port connectors. There is one USB-A, one USB-C, and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the left edge of the laptop and the proprietary Surface Connect port (for connecting the charger) on the right edge of the laptop. You will need to take good care of your charger because you'll not be able to use a generic charger in place of it. The Surface 5 model I got has a 12th Gen Intel Core i5-1235U processor and 8 GB RAM, which is plenty for the light use I intend for the laptop (Internet browsing, email, watching videos). A 16 GB version is available, but you cannot upgrade the 8 GB version to 16 GB, so keep that in mind when you choose your version. The limited number of ports in the Surface 5 mean that you might want to consider the Surface Dock accessory. The dock is used in place of your charger to provide power and gives you four additional USB-A 3.0 ports, an Ethernet port, a headphone jack, and two Mini Display ports for hooking up two external monitors. Other accessories you might want to consider are the Surface Slim pen and Surface Arc Bluetooth mouse. You will also want to protect it with a good sleeve, case, or backpack. All of these accessories are sold separately. All-in-all, this is a very nice lightweight laptop, especially for traveling. I give it high marks and a solid recommendation.

Love it
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm a Surface Pro/Surface Book user, and this is my first Surface laptop -- I also have the 16" Macbook M1 Pro and M1 Macbook Air, the latter which I consider the gold standard for ultraportable laptop performance and design. The keyboard on the Surface Laptop is more enjoyable to type on than the M1 MBA - it feels more responsive and more solid than the M1 MBA. This solid feel is a tradeoff between the slightly more premium chassis of the M1 MBA. That being said, both machines look gorgeous, my preference goes to the Surface Laptop. Performance was a surprise, because the Surface Laptop feels just as snappy as the M1 MBA. I didn't run benchmarks, and Microsoft's SSDs are typically much slower than Apple's, but in day to day use, Surface Laptop never stumbled through multitasking even though this only has 8gb. Windows 11 is snappy which certainly helps. The Surface Laptop has a touchscreen which doesn't feel as solid as writing on the Surface Pro (and it wasn't meant to), nonetheless - it's perfect for the occasional touchscreen use. The only downside is that there is nowhere convenient to attach the pen. The magnets just aren't strong enough to hold it in place. This isn't meant to be a pen-first laptop, so that's ok. This Surface Laptop is worth the buy if you're on the market for a premium ultraportable.

Great Laptop, Not-So-Great Operating System
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In general, I think the Surface Book 5 is a pretty solid machine. Build quality is good and performance is good for normal day to day tasks but overall, I'm not convinced it's the best fit for me. The only notable items in the box are the computer itself and its charger. The charger uses Microsoft's proprietary magnetic port which thankfully, I haven't had to use since we have actual ports as well. Specifically, There's a headphone jack, USB A port, and a Thunderbolt port - which is really nice to have. I was very glad to find out that this laptop would charge with any normal USB C charger as the last thing I want is to go back to having to carry a dedicated laptop charger. The overall body of the machine is good and free from any noticeable flexing. The keyboard is pretty nice once you get used it and while I don't think the trackpad is my favorite, it's definitely far from the worst I've used. In a shocking turn of events, I went with the pink model (normally I prefer black for all my electronics) and honestly, I kind of like it. It's a rose-gold-ish color that looks sort of like tinted silver in some lighting conditions and straight up pink in others. As far as physicality is concerned, I feel like this machine would hold up quite nicely to daily commutes, and general office/school use. I don't have any concerns related to build quality. The screen is pretty solid. It's got an aspect ratio of 3:2 which is a little weird but overall not a bad thing. The touchscreen feels nice and responsive. I'm a cinematographer and graphic designer by trade and would trust this screen for personal or lower-end professional work in a pinch. It's vibrant but still pretty true-to-life. The main problems that I have with this laptop can be summed up by saying "Windows 11". I'm not a fan. I've had a few glitches in my short time using it that make me a bit nervous. Nothing has been catastrophic, the screen has just randomly gone black for a few seconds before coming back, but it's enough to make me worry. I also just don't care for the general design and user experience of W11. Even though it's clearly designed to be mobile-focused, it just feels limiting. The reason I would chose a Windows laptop over the alternative is customizability and raw productivity. I don't think Windows 11 really lends itself to that. That being said, you can likely install Windows 10 (or Linux, if that's more your style) but I feel like a user shouldn't have to make those kinds of huge modifications to a product to get it to work well. I'm very particular with my computers so this may not be a big deal to you, but it's something I felt was worth mentioning. Overall, if you want a nicely built, compact laptop for day-to-day computing, are okay with Windows 11 (or just Windows in general), and are looking for something in this price bracket, I think the Surface Book 5 deserves your attention. I would likely recommend this to a friend if Windows was a must have, and it was on sale, as I think the value proposition is a bit lacking otherwise.

Wow the power
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Wow what a beautiful laptop computer that’s compact and brilliantly fast like lightning fast. Over the years I’ve got to review some cool technology and being a technology savvy home it’s always fun to get the latest and greatest. Generally for a lap top all I need to be able to do is make some documents and excel sheets for my business so this review will be for the normal working person who wants a light compact laptop for traveling around. In my case we own eight tire stores and we are family owned so we make all of our own forms and documents since we don’t have like a HR department. I was using a two year old laptop which I thought was still really nice until I got my hands on the Microsoft surface pro. Unbelievably beautiful and well built and the packaging was immaculate. I love the everything about this laptop from the speed and processor and the ability to run multiple apps simultaneously to the outstanding external finish that feels like a haptic effect when you glide your finger across the surface. I also love the new chargers another great feature of this laptop. If you want a premium laptop to handle all your day to day task I strongly recommend you consider this one it is really impressive.

Great Laptop
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is an excellent laptop. I love how slim it is. Ultraportable. I love that it comes in different colors. I chose black. Very attractive but a bit prone to fingerprints. Battery life is excellent. I rarely have to charge and I use it everyday. If you’ve used the surface pro this is pretty much the same without the detachable keyboard. I almost wish the screen wouldn’t stop at a 90 degree angle but would go back a bit further. The keys feel very good to the touch so no problems there. The 13 in may be small for some. If you like bigger laptops it would be better to get the 15 inch version. The core i5 processor is more than powerful enough to handle your tasks. With 8gb ram I’ve used it for presentations, zoom meetings, Netflix, and more with no problems. 512gb hard drive is a good amount of storage for your needs. You can always add an external drive if more is needed. There’s only one usb input and one usb-c input. So if more is needed then add a usb dongle to help with expansion. If you need a laptop for school and ultraportability then this is a great laptop. Windows 11 is already installed. It’s a beautiful laptop. The graphics are very mediocre due to the entry level Iris graphics chip but it’s not a deal breaker. You cannot go wrong with this laptop if purchased.

Pretty and easy to carry...Love it!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My old laptop has been with me for over 5 years and I bought it used. I was very used to it and knew everything about it. However, I LOVE this new thing!!! The color is beautiful, it weights nothing, and it is very slim. I had great fear getting this as the last time I got a computer it took me and my IT friend a long time to get things set up. This took no time at all and I did it all by myself in minutes!! I love the touch screen however it is very touchy. Learning curve!!! The touch screen sometimes has a mind of its own. Easy to fix but still a pain in the rump. I have watched a couple of movies on this and it is amazing!!! Just like my big TV at home, but I can carry it anywhere. Thing I do NOT like...the charger. I thought we were going back to universal charger?!? This charger looks so dainty and I am sure easy to break or bend. It is NOT a good design to the point I took one full star off. For the cost of this it is aggravating they would do this but not surprising.

Best Laptop Ever!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Best laptop I've ever had. Super light and portable. I was juggling between a Mac book and this and I'm so glad I chose this. If you are already a Macbook person then I'd go Macbook but if you are a Chrome type of person this is no doubt your computer. It has all the looks and feels of a mac book with the ease of chrome.

Microsoft surface laptop 4
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Although the laptop was on the pricey side, it was worth every penny. I have had mine for two years and I have yet to experience any problems with it. It's very up to date as far as software and etc. The touch screen and rose gold color are my favorite parts about it.

Very Stiff Keyboard
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm a writer and I chose this laptop because of Microsoft's reputation. When my new laptop arrived, I was very pleased. It was well packaged and very light which I really wanted since I go to the library and coffee shops a lot. Setup was very easy. I connected it to my home network and it started installing the newest updates and software. I also installed all my necessary files and I was eager to get started exploring and working on my book. I noticed that the keyboard wrist rest was textured, almost like a kind of material. It felt really nice instead of the hard metal I'd become used to. But as I started working, I quickly realized that my hands and wrists hurt. My posture and the position of my hands and wrists were fine. The only thing I could attribute this to was the new laptop's keyboard. When I paid a little more attention, I realized that the keys felt stiff. I've worked with this unit on and off over the past several days and the stiffness isn't going away. Other than that, the laptop works great. It's very fast. The display is clear and apps load fast. But, to me, it's just not good for using in long stints, for example, in note taking or book writing. However, I can see it being used as a great unit for business needs like email, video chats, and such.

What sadist designed the power cord?
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The laptop is fine. Whatever. I don't ask much of it and it does what I ask. I shop. I watch videos. I manage my finances. It's fine. Whoever designed the charger should be beaten to death. The adaptor or transformer or whatever it's called is in the middle of the cable, and the magnetic connector breaks away with a stiff breeze. You have the heaviest part of the charging assembly in the middle of the cable, always sitting on the floor, effectively cutting the length of the cable in half. And then just shift your weight and the charger disconnects. Honestly, they had to be laughing their balls off when they shipped this charging cable.
