Finally an answer to the M-class Apple machines!

I am in an Apple household for sure, but have always preferred Windows because I’m a tinkerer at heart. Being a die-hard Windows fan whilst surrounded by Apple M and A processors is difficult at times. Short battery life, hot processors, howling fans, and laggy performance are pretty well-established cons of owning a Windows machine. Trouble is, Windows machines have been this way for decades, only getting “better” with monster desktops with 1200w power supplies, etc. I prefer laptops, so I’ve been tempted by Apple’s ARM processors…until now. Microsoft has tried ARM processors in the past, and they have been slow and mostly disappointing. Well, this has finally been addressed with the Qualcomm ARM processors. Microsoft is definitely on the right track here and are able to go toe-to-toe with Apple’s silicon. Build: the fit and finish of this machine is incredible. It has a premium feel and is very sturdy, with no flexing of the chassis. I actually appreciate the bottom case…it’s beveled which makes it really easy to pick up off of a table. Screen: I’m glad I got the 15” since it’s really compact for the size. The panel is very bright (600 nits!) and is incredibly detailed. I like that it’s a touch-screen since it makes it easy to scroll with your thumb as you use it. I can’t seem to get the Surface Pen to work with it, although it will pair via Bluetooth. Since it seems like it doesn’t have pen capability which is a (small) bummer. Lastly, there is lots of reflectivity if you use it in a bright environment, so it would have been nice if the anti-glare coating was better. The 600 nits of brightness do help in this aspect. Keyboard: I much prefer a mechanical keyboard, so while the keyboard is nice and quiet, the keypresses feel soft, almost too soft. It’s a laptop though, so it’s to be expected. I would have preferred, however, a more crisp and “clicky” keyboard, although the softness of the keys are best suited for an office environment. Also the trackpad is finally a haptic design, meaning you don’t have the inconsistent presses of a mechanically based trackpad. You can press and click anywhere on it without having trouble like most every Windows trackpad out there. It’s a VERY welcome feature and finally puts Windows trackpads in the same league as Apple. Ports: Microsoft provided a nice array of ports, including a USB-A port, along with two USB-C ports. The right side has the Surface charging port and microSD slot. I’m not a fan of proprietary chargers, so I would have much preferred two more USB-C ports instead of the Surface connector. The good news is you can charge via the USB-C ports in case you find yourself in a hotel without the Surface power supply. Speed: It’s fast and efficient. Even under heavy processing, I don’t hear the fans nor does it get hot, which is a huge upgrade over Intel/AMD x86 processors. This machine has a huge “NPU” processor, which is certainly positioned well for AI, but as it stands currently, I’m not sure how to judge it’s performance as I’m not sure what the NPU is all used for. That said, I trust that this is a great thing that will only improve in time and I’m excited to see how AI/ML integrates into my daily workflow. Weight: Despite it being 15”, it’s really light and portable. I normally prefer 13” size laptops for their portability, but this 15” is very light-weight and portable compared to your typical 15” laptop. The overall rigidity of the construction makes this machine perfect for on-the-go use. Speakers: They are solid and full-sounding and are great in my opinion. They are no MacBook Pro speakers (especially the 16” MBP model) but represent a huge improvement over your typical Windows laptop “tinny” audio. Lastly, the battery life. It’s amazing. As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, heat, crazy fans, and terrible battery life have long-haunted PC laptops, until now. I’m very happy with battery life, and while I haven’t measured it, I haven’t felt the need to since it lasts a long time between charges. I no longer have to stress about the battery life while being mobile. In closing, Microsoft is really onto something here. When Apple released its M1 processor, it felt like a quantum leap in computing and made me question the future of Windows. I can say now that Microsoft and its many OEMs are absolutely back in the game with this Qualcomm processor. The future is exciting again for Windows fans all over and I'm very excited to see how software/AI updates improve these machines. Great job Microsoft!
