If you wiped away all the labels and made the keyboard blank you’d think that the Surface Laptop Go was a MacBook Air. If their goal was to match the MacBook Air to a T, they did it. If you have been pining for a Windows experience that matches the Apple experience in a lightweight form factor, this is it, hands down. The laptop is not perfect, but it is an A+ laptop in my opinion. It is super elegant and a real dream to use thanks to its careful design - weight, lid, keyboard, touchpad. And the screen is beautiful. So brilliant. Do I recommend this laptop? Well, it really depends what you are going after. If you are looking for a super portable well-performing laptop to bring for a traveling non-graphics intensive job or for easy movement around the house or traveling lightweight on a flight, HECK YES I do. Excellent price, excellent design, super portable, excellent quality. Now, if you are looking for something portable for a graphics intensive job (for example, closet design companies), I probably would not recommend this laptop. You’ll probably be disappointed only because the specs of this computer max out at a low-power Core i5, 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM. These specs are sufficient for casual use, but certainly not for anything graphically intensive – but I don’t think this was Microsoft’s goal with this laptop. If you want something that is portable for graphic intensive use, then the standard Surface Laptop is where it is at. I specifically mentioned a closet design company above because I recently had one of those companies come out and the rep was using a Surface Laptop to produce designs. If you are in the market for a new portable, definitely consider the Surface Laptop Go. Just get rid of the S mode after you get it and you’ll be set. Things they got right: *One-handed lid opening (thank you!). Man it is smooth. *Beautiful screen that is touch *Aluminum chassis *Solid solid keyboard. Such a dream to type on. *Design. I am in love with the size and weight. So portable and fun to bring around the house. Such a pleasure. *Great touchpad. So nice to use and click. *Both USB C and USB A ports. Would have been a real annoyance if they only provided a USB C with the intent of matching Apple and their one port requiring-a-dock-for-everything design. *Same charging plug as the other Surface products (Pro, Laptop, etc.) for interoperability. Things they got wrong: *No backlit keyboard. This one stings. It is not a deal breaker, but using this in the darkness is not fun. *The corners of the screen are rounded. It looks awesome aesthetically, but just be aware that you are losing a few pixels in each corner as a result. *No right CTRL. Ugh, another stinger. *720p camera. Not horrible, but could have been 1080p easily. *Only 1024p on the vertical resolution. I guess the idea was to save battery life by not going higher. More pixels require more battery and Microsoft was probably trying to maximize battery on a device that, admittedly, was not created for graphic design. 1440p was possible considering the Surface Pro 3 is 1440p. But whatever. *I’m writing this review of the max model, with 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD, which is sufficient for casual use. But the base model, which everyone will be attracted to for its price offers a paltry 64 GB eMMC hard drive and 4 GB of RAM. This is barely useable today. Windows plus Microsoft Office 2016 will require ~35GB of space. A 64GB drive will probably be 59GB formatted, so you’ll be left with 23GB free. Ouch. *Windows S Mode. I’m glad there is an easy way to change to Windows Home with a quick download from the Microsoft Store (which will require you to login just to download unfortunately – can’t get away with an offline, non MS account). Windows S Mode sucks. You can’t install anything, including Chrome. I’m sure the app will be the #1 app on the Windows store soon! Hah!
