Customers are saying

Customers consistently note Windows 8.1's ease of use and performance as significant strengths, with many praising its compatibility and relatively smooth installation. However, some users express dissatisfaction with the user interface and find the price point to be a drawback. A few also reported issues with DVD playback and hard drive failures. Overall, opinions are mixed, highlighting both the operating system's strengths and areas needing improvement.

I purchased this product out of necessity for a computer I had just built. Even though I was looking for a different OS, due to my time window I ended up purchasing this and I have been very pleased with it. It is a clean and smooth operating system with easy set-up and installation.

Its a good product I would suggest that you have at MINIMUM 4GB of Ram. If you are used to win7 or vista. It may take a while before you are familiar with the navigation around windows 8

Pretty much went with 8.1 cause its all that best buy had and I wanted to start gaming as soon as possible. Price that Microsoft asks for is a bit ridiculous to me but what can you do.

My computer had crashed and I needed to reinstall my OS. I was using Windows 7 but the version was for doing an upgrade. Since I had to purchase a new OS anyway I had decided to buy Windows 8.1. The installation was very smooth. After installation I used Windows 8.1 for two weeks. The navigation to where I needed to go was not intuitive and even when i knew how to get to where i wanted to go i still had difficulty remembering how to get there. I hated the system and went out and purchased Windows 7 for a new installation.

What can you say about Windows? The new interface is decent but can be challenging to learn right out of the box. Luckily that will be addressed in 8.2. Otherwise, a solid performance.

I purchased this operating system to have added compatibility with business apps on my Mac. I use it with Parallels. It works reasonably well, but is not as intuitive as I would like.

Had an emergency rebuild to do and Windows 7 isn't on the shelf and costs more. Went with Windows 8 and its fine, especially using classic shell so it looks just like Windows 7.

Upgrading from Vista to Windows 8.1 I could see a big improvement on my desktop PC. Booting time takes a few seconds, connecting to the internet is almost instant, no more bloating with tons of add-ons. You install only what you need from Windows Store which in turn will keep your apps up-to-date automatically. With all the bells and whistles of new technology comes the steep learning curve for technically challenged users! Fortunately, there is a plethora of tutorials and help tips on the internet to walk you through. Eventually, you will learn to like Windows 8.1. Don't forget to install security update 1. Happy Windows shopping!

8.1 is an improvement over Windows 8

I performed a clean install on a new hard drive which will usually avoid alot of the upgrade problems. 8.1 installed easily and was pretty easy to configure. If you're looking to replicate windows 7 this comes fairly close by offering a desktop tile on the modern user interface. The tiles are a little clunky to use with a mouse because the operating system is designed for touch. Once you're on the desktop it's not much different from Win7. The app store is still pretty thin as far as content but I'm sure that will improve over time. Only thing I found annoying is that to power down your PC it takes 4 mouse clicks from the desktop.

I thought Windows 7 was fine but for the last year I had to keep re-installing it every 2 months no matter how careful I was. Even though Windows 7 was still supported, I figured I would go right to the top and get the latest and greatest from Microsoft. Now I read a lot of bad things about Windows 8. I seen it on display in stores and I wasn't impressed with it. But let me tell you that it really is the same old Windows just a more modern interface. Instead of a start menu, you have a start screen. That's about it. And you can create your own start menu if you prefer. The Apps and Games that are available are really cool. The only thing is to really enjoy Windows 8 you have to have a well specced high end system imo otherwise you might experience lock ups and system freezes, hence why it has such a bad reputation. But if your a computer geek and enjoy playing with pc`s, WINDOWS 8.1 really ROCKS !!!!!!

Windows 8 installs easily, and allows you to transfer files from your previous Windows install. However, the Metro interface is a train wreck, and brings down the value of the product significantly. Microsoft needs to learn quickly that the vast majority of PC users have no intention on converting to tablet style computing at home, and leave the mouse and keyboard interface intuitive. Thankfully you can download a free program called Class Shell which allows you to never have to deal with Metro.
