Customers are saying

Customers consistently note Windows 8.1's ease of use and performance as significant strengths, with many praising its compatibility and relatively smooth installation. However, some users express dissatisfaction with the user interface and find the price point to be a drawback. A few also reported issues with DVD playback and hard drive failures. Overall, opinions are mixed, highlighting both the operating system's strengths and areas needing improvement.

I just installed Windows 8.1 about 3 months ago and have not had any issues. I play most of the major MMO's and each run very well. I didn't change my graphics card, but even the graphics seem more vibrant under Windows 8.1. I would recommend this version for both PC and Laptop use... especially if you have a touch screen monitor!

I basically got this so I can play Battlefield 4 and yet it so fast when loading the OS. It does use your email to log in but once you get used to it then it's not a problem. I just love the features of the OS and I hope it's gets better than Windows vista. lol

Well it installs fine and fairly easy if you have the correct drivers. I used mine for boot camp on an Apple Mac. Dual boots perfect and runs the windows stuff just fine. Windows 8 you finally get used to it.

It's windows and is compatible with almost everything. Hate the way you close programs. Can't stand how email works. I want nothing to do with my info on the cloud. I am not on one social network and do not want to be and it felt like the program was demanding it. The email doesn't recognize pop email so I had to go through a convoluted setup to make it work through outlook. It is a very angering program that I am still trying to figure out. Hoping the next windows is less frustrating.

The whole Windows 8 and 8.1 software is coming right along as a new OS. I think there is still plenty of room for improvement to the OS but they are coming along.

I bought because I need an OS because I had a virus in my computer and the OEM Cd I lost, and windows 10 was not being selling, but it is for free if you have an older version.... so I bought it.

It's a touch better than Windows 8. They've cleaned up the UI a bit. Having a touchscreen equipped PC is needed to make the most of navigating the system.

Successful upgrade from Vista to Win 8.1 on HP DV5

Upgraded my HP DV5000 laptop purchased in 2009 to Windows 8.1 without much problem. Best Buy geek squad member said my computer could be upgraded but it would be slow. He was wrong. It runs like new now and runs fast. Had to reinstall all programs. MS Office 2010 still runs fast and have no issues with internet. Had to find a DVD player software because Windows 8.1 does not include a program to play DVDs. I downloaded and installed VLC Media Player from the internet (do a search on that and you will find it easily). Seems to work okay. Before I installed Windows 8.1, I downloaded and ran the compatibility checker from the Microsoft site - you should do that. It will tell you what programs will or will not work. My laptop is a 2009 HP Pavilion DV5000, Dual Core T6600 CPU at 2.20 GHZ, 4GB Ram, 300 GB Hard Drive, 64 Bit and 1280x800 Resolution. When doing the installation, at the start, some sort of message came up to select options 0 or 1. I think I tried 1 first and the installation stalled. Tried again and selected option 0 and then the install continued. When it finished, the computer seemed to be frozen when it rebooted. I removed the install disk then it booted up okay. The screen resolution looked stretched and I could not adjust it at first. Then I did the process to reinstall the monitor driver. It said I already has the most current driver but then after a few minutes, the resolution seemed to reset itself and it is perfect now. Overall, the installation went okay with only a couple of confusing steps I stumbled thru. But, it all works great now and I am very glad I switched. The computer runs like new and I was surprised at how much I like the new version of Windows. By the way, I use a Nokia Windows Phone and absolutely hate it in comparison to the Android and I-Phones I had. But, on the laptop, I really like Windows 8.1. Good luck if you upgrade. Make sure you first backup all your data onto a separate external hard drive, the cloud, or DVD or flash drive. Otherwise you will lose it all. But, I would recommend it solely based on my experience with this upgrade. I plan on upgrading my other computer too - it is on Windows 7 right now.
