Customers are saying

Customers consistently note Windows 8.1's ease of use and performance as significant strengths, with many praising its compatibility and relatively smooth installation. However, some users express dissatisfaction with the user interface and find the price point to be a drawback. A few also reported issues with DVD playback and hard drive failures. Overall, opinions are mixed, highlighting both the operating system's strengths and areas needing improvement.

Windows 8.1 was necessary at the time until 2015. After 2016, Windows 10 is extremely necessary to have for desktops or laptops.

PRODUCT IS TECHIE RICH AND MIGHT WORK IN HIDDEN COMMANDS OCCASIONALLY. TOO MUCH EFFORT TO GET IT TO WORK. NEW MAIL, CONTACTS, QUICK CONTROL OF MAIL TOO MUCH HIDDEN. RELYING ON APP TO PRINT BUT APPS NOT UP TO ABILITY YET. TO GET RESULTS ON ANYTHING, USER MUST REMEMBER TOO MUCH AND TAKES TOO LONG TO KEEP LOOKING UP COMMANDS, ETC, USUALLY CANT FIND IN EFFICIENT MANNER OR TIME. "WAY TOO MUCH TIME" TO MAKE ANYTHING WORK. I WANT MY WINDOWS 7 BACK!!!!!! CURRENTLY HAVE XP ON OLD SYSTEM, 7 ON DESKTOP, 8.1 ON LAPTOP. CONTEMPLATING LAPTOP AS ANCHOR. DOES ANYONE HAVE A 7 FOR QUICK SALE?

I would have to recommend Windows 7 over Windows 8 if you have the option. The changes to the GUI are not very easy to understand initially although they can be learned. I am not a huge fan of fixing something that is not broken and Windows 7 was not broken.

I'm not sure if I am completely sold on this version of Windows yet. I haven't had too many problems. It takes a little time to get used to going between the desktop and the windows tiles. Feels a little disjointed, like am running two different OS

Not sure why it's such a departure from previous windows but it definitely takes some getting used to. It is very stable however and there seem to be a lot of apps available which is fun

I don't know if I'm just old school or what but it's my opinion the windows 8 was really designed for tablets. Otherwise once you get used to it, it's not that bad.

Format is confusing and too many pop up screens. As a senior citizen it is difficult to navigate this new operating system.

    Better OS than expected

Pros- fast, well designed, 8.1 with update 1 addressed many previous issues, easy install, better os than its been given credit for, functional for desktop users with mouse and keyboard setup, just an easy OS to work with Cons - lack of standard dvd play back, have to purchase media center pack (that is if you don't know how to torrents correctly), a tad expensive I felt I was skeptical...to say the least...about trying the new windows 8.1. I had beta tested windows 8 and it left much to be desired. I needed a new OS though for my first computer build and, after searching reviews for 8.1 I determined that the new 8.1 with update 1 was worth a try. After installing...which was a breeze...I began playing with the UI and it was great. Far better than all the negative reviews I saw. It is different of course, but in a good way. It is honestly a beautiful OS and I started to enjoy the new features. Playing around with the settings can be a pain at first but that's just due to the lack of traditional start menu found in 7, vista, xp, and the previous versions. After spending two days with it I have found that most of the complaints related to the functionality for desktop users has been addressed. I have windows 7 on one laptop, vista on another (I basically killed that computer out of frustration though) and xp on a Dell dimension desktoo. This new OS has mixed the best of the previous installations and added in features that allow for functionality across various hardware pkatforms. I can see how this might be nice to use with a tablet or all in one pc. I do find it a bit annoying that dvd/blu ray playback is not standard, and Microsoft tries to address that by making you purchase more software (media center pack). Looking at the big picture though, ultra books, tablets and phones have no need for optical playback and those codecs can be expensive. It has been a while since this issue has been around though so there are plenty of work arounds. Overall it's a great product. Glad I bought it. It should be noted that I don't game so I don't know how much better or worse it is for those type users. I primarily run Spotify, chrome(with several tabs), word, excel, Adobe photo shop, dreamweaver, and other random programs such as vlc to watch movies. Windows 8.1 can handle all of it easily at the same time and make it easier to dance in between all the open programs. Specs: Mobo: Asus b85e-csm Cpu: intel i5 4570 Gpu: msi something. ..iit was cheap but works fine Optical: Asus bc-12b1st blu ray combo Mem: corsair vengeance 16 go Ssd: Samsung evolution 250 go Cooler: corsair h100i liquid Cpu cooler Case: thermaltake chaser a31 Monitor: monoprice 27" is ( this is my first build and I've always wanted to drop the specs on my rig ) Hope you find this useful and keep an open mind. Haters are gonna hate and windows 8 was an easy target. I'm glad I got it.

Haven't used it enough to know for certain. So far so good. Like anything, it's new so there are a lot of haters (IT IS DIFFERENT), but the more I use it the more I am comfortable with it!
