The Coens take on the gangster genre admirably
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Miller's Crossing is the result of the Coen Brothers, legendary writer/directors, taking on the gangster genre. The result is a complex and brilliant tale of betrayals, deception, and the bitter toll that a man's mercy can take upon him. This is the story of Tom Reagan, a lieutenant in crime lord Leo's mob during the Prohibition era. Johnny Caspar (Jon Polito, who is always brilliant in Coen Brothers films, giving what I believe is his finest performance here) is an up-and-coming mobster, who asks that Leo kill Bernie (John Turturro, brilliant) who crossed Caspar. Leo refuses, however, because Leo's girl Verna (Marcia Harden) is Bernie's sister. Reagan disapproves of Leo's choice, and when it is revealed that Reagan and Verna are together, Leo casts off Reagan. Reagan chooses to go join Caspar, but when he is given his first assignment, to kill Bernie, Reagan chooses to secretly spare him. Caspar's right hand man, Eddie Dane (J. E. Freeman, another brilliant presence in the film) keeps a suspicious eye on Reagan, particularly as Reagan continues to maintain contact with Verna and Bernie, forcing Reagan to play a fine line between the many different factions at work. This is a great gangster film, and really has nothing too much in common with other popular films in the genre, which along with the Coens's brilliant screenplay makes this a very unique film. The resolution is particularly excellent, and like many of the better Coen films, it's a very grim film, but not to the extent that it overwhelms the story. This is a great picture.

Coen Brothers At Their Best
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It's a bit unusual, as you'd expect from the Coen brothers. The Irish mob, led by Albert Finney, is at odds with the Italians, and there's trouble ahead. The script is brilliantly written and unpredictable. And the cast is perfect. I especially love the music score, memorable and haunting. This is a film that stays with you.

Another Coen brothers classic
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have been a fan of the these guys for years, and I didn't even know it. The plot twists, the ensemble cast, and great story line, along with the great technical aspects, lighting, sound, music, or lack of, as the case may be, are all trademarks that are included in all their films.

The Coen"s Brothers Best....
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Easily the Coen's best drama film. Great acting from all cast members. Great to see it on Blu-ray. The extras are a little skimpy...but, still a must own for fans of the Coen's..
