A "Cock-a-doodie" Classic!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My college professor once said you can tell a lot about a movie from its opening credits. That being said, "Misery" starts off with that doomed car ride through the winding roads of Colorado. The credits appear in an unflattering bold red font. That didn't matter to me when I saw this movie 28 years ago. However, watching it again so recently, I'm not sure if it was an artistic choice or the style way back then. Perhaps it may have been a low budget film as there were no big stars aside from screen legend Lauren Bacall. "Misery" is based on a Stephen King novel about a writer held captive by an obsessive fan in the middle of nowhere. James Caan plays the unfortunate author, Paul Sheldon, who has suffered two broken legs and other injuries from a car accident. Kathy Bates plays his #1 fan Annie Wilkes, a former nurse who fails to alert anyone looking for him that he is still alive. James Caan plays it straight as Paul Sheldon. He pretty much reflects the audience's reaction to everything that happens to him. However, Kathy Bates owns the movie playing "Annie Wilkes." She weaves between playing the friendly nurse and a raving lunatic with ease. She scared us and won an Oscar for it. It's a great movie and a good adaptation of the novel, but it looks like a TV movie on Lifetime. So don't expect a tidal wave of blood coming out of the elevator like in "The Shining." The movie "Misery" is pretty faithful to the material. It loses some of the novel's grotesque moments of Paul Sheldon's captivity, but the "hobbling scene" makes up for that. For all of you "dirty-birdies" out there who haven't seen "Misery," I highly recommend watching it.

One of the best Stephen King adaptations ever!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Cathy Bates gives an unforgettable performance that easily goes down as one of the greatest female villains in cinema history. However this film is so much more than that, and truly grips you for every minute of its running time. Even though many of its most infamous moments may no longer be surprises, this is one film that completely holds up after many repeat viewings!
