Not my favorite
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When I opened the box there was a strong smell of plastic. After running the first pot of water only as suggested, it was even worse. After several attempts to clean and leaving it open for 3 days I still could not remove the smell or taste. I never made any coffee with it because of the plastic taste and smell of the water. Did have a nice size and footprint though. Item returned.

Good Value for a Small Coffee Machine
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My 8-1/2 year old Mr. Coffee DRX5-RB programmable coffeemaker gave up the go this morning, so I redeemed some of my Best Buy Rewards points and replaced it with this new JWX3-RB machine. It's a minor upgrade from the old machine, mainly in that it can make a little more coffee at once. The timer feature, price and availability were the other main considerations in my purchasing decision. Since one other reviewer gave this machine a bad review because he felt its capacity is smaller than claimed, I'm going to begin my review by discussing the capacity of the machine, which is stated as 5 cups. In today's retail coffee market, with common serving sizes of 12 fluid ounces (fl oz), 16 fl oz and 20 fl oz (those would be your Starbucks' Tall, Grande and Venti sizes), many people have forgotten that the traditional coffee cup size is a mere 6 fl oz. (Coffee etiquette experts may be quick to point out that the actual volume of coffee in that cup is really just 5 fl oz, which leaves room at the top of the cup for creamer and to avoid spilling.) When you look at recipes that tell you how much ground coffee to use to make a cup, it's the 6 fl oz cup that they mean, and so that's the cup size that Mr. Coffee refers to when it says that this machine makes 5 cups. So, if you're expecting the carafe to hold 40 fl oz, which would be the case if the standard coffee cup were the common 8 fl oz cups in cooking and baking recipes, you're going to be disappointed. You'll be even more disappointed if you were expecting the machine to make enough to fill 5 Starbucks Venti cups (80 fl oz)! In fact, the carafe holds about 30 fl oz. As a practical matter for me, my favorite coffee delivery vehicle is a travel mug (named "Daddy's Sippy Cup" by my youngest daughter) that holds about 11 fl oz, so this machine can make enough coffee at once to fill it about 2-2/3 times. Now, I haven't taken a measuring cup and checked the actual capacity of the carafe against it, but based on this machine and others that I've used, it appears that the JWX3-RB's carafe's capacity is at least pretty close to the 30 fl oz that I expected. On to the important stuff: Using the machine is about as simple as it gets. Stick a small (4-6 cup) basket filter into the brew basket, add your grounds, place the brew basket in the receptacle, add your water and press the Brew Now button. (Recipe: I find that 2-1/2 tbsp of dark roast grounds and enough water to reach about 2-1/2 cups on the water gauge on the side of the machine fills Daddy's Sippy Cup with a nice, rich brew.) Using the timer is nearly as easy. Use the Hour and Minute buttons to set the time, then press and hold the Delay Time button and use the Hour and Minute buttons to set the time when you want brewing to start. Put in your water and coffee grounds as above, and press the Delay Brew button. Your coffee will be ready about 10 minutes after the start time you set. If you're making a full pot, allow another 5 minutes. IMPROVEMENTS OVER MY OLD DRX5-RB The DRX5-RB had a couple of annoying quirks. The first was that its lid had a tendency to pop up during brewing, which never caused a spill, but did increase brew times and sometimes resulted in a short cup of coffee. I worked around the problem by placing an object - usually Daddy's Sippy Cup, since its stainless steel construction made it unlikely to break if it were accidentally knocked off - on top of the lid during brewing. The JWX3-RB does not have this problem - yay! The DRX5-RB's buttons were located on the base of the machine, right in front of the burner, which made them susceptible to water spills that, I think, caused its delay brew buttons to short out quite some time before the rest of the machine quit. The JWX3-RB's buttons are located near the top of the machine, where they will hopefully be less susceptible to spills. They'll also hopefully be out of range of clumsy hands and children, which should help keep the time settings from getting messed up, which was a regular problem with the DRX5-RB. THINGS MR. COFFEE DIDN'T GET RIGHT It took a steady hand to pour water into the DRX5-RB without spilling, because the space provided was a bit tight and awkwardly located. Unfortunately, design of the JWX3-RB makes this problem worse. It's also harder to wash the JWX3-RB's carafe, because its rim is too narrow to fit my hand in. I will have to use a brush to clean it. (That was NOT a problem with the DRX5-RB's carafe.) THINGS THAT BEST BUY DIDN'T GET RIGHT The Specifications section of Best Buy's listing for this machine states that it has a permanent filter. It does not. I don't actually care about this, because I prefer to use paper filters anyway, but the listing error needs to be corrected. As of this writing, I've made my first mug of coffee with this machine, and as far as its primary purpose of making coffee is concerned, I'm pleased to report that it does the job quite nicely, just as well as my old machine did. So, while I'm deducting one star for the inconveniences and Best Buy's error, I'm still recommending the machine.
