Got this a while back on sale and it's still running great. First time buying MSI laptop so wasn't sure on it but now I know it won't be my last because of the awesome prices and build. Would last me a while until I can upgrade to another gaming laptop in the future.

Great laptop and great gaming laptop. The fan control is extremely useful when gaming and you can customize the rgb on the keyboard lights. Giant track pad for when I'm away from my desk. Might upgrade storage as 1tb these days aint much but great buy.

Benchmarks crash, thermal throttles HARD

I bought this laptop, and returned it the very next day.
Firstly, as with every laptop I've ever owned, I opened up the bottom to repaste the CPU and GPU with new thermal paste (Arctic MX-4) as the paste from the factory is almost always bad with these laptops. Sure enough, the paste from the factory is super milky. That doesn't bode well with me, but it's not a huge deal, as I just repasted it myself.
With the machine opened, I swapped out the 1TB NVME SSD inside the machine with my own so I can install a clean, bloat-free version of Windows 10 Pro. A quick comment on that, I like how servicable the machine is - two NVME SSD slots, swappable WiFi card, both RAM DIMM slots accessible.
With my own copy of Windows 10 on here, I started my benchmarks, and that's where I ran into both problems, and inconsistencies. I ran Intel XTU to check for CPU thermal throttling, along with OCCT to stress test the CPU. I ran the test for an hour, and the CPU consistently ran at 81C at about 2.9-3.01GHz with no thermal throttling. Not bad so far. Then when I try to run both 3DMark and Unigine Heaven benchmarks, things went wrong. 3DMark tests literally took about 30-45 minutes to load, and when it finally did, it would crash, assuming it would eventually load at all without crashing. Tried Unigine Heaven, and the test would lock at only 5FPS every time, regardless of telling it to use the dedicated GPU in Nvidia Control Panel, and ensuring the machine was in performance mode. So, what, can I not run any GPU benchmarks on this machine? Never had this problem on any other computers I've had, or currently have.
I could almost live with that if not for this last thing - in games, it throttles HARD. Makes no sense to me since Intel XTU reported no thermal throttling during the 100% load CPU stress test. I tried a game not too demanding - Black Mesa (the Half Life remake), and even after just a few seconds with the game running, CPU temperatures between 90-97C, and it's constantly thermal throttling. As soon as I saw that, I put the original untouched NVME SSD back in the laptop, put it back in it's box, and took it straight back to the store.
Is the excuse that you can ONLY use their default bloated Windows 10 installation? It's a computer, you should be able to use your own OS, and if all these problems are a result of that, then that's MSI's fault. I have never had such bad thermal throttling, and software instability on any other computer or laptop besides maybe Razer. I also understand it's possible I got a lemon, maybe that's the case, but given my experience, I'd say don't get this one.

I wish I’ve would’ve waited just a little longer because there are so many good processors coming soon or already have. Based on reviews from other owners and videos I’ve watched on this website it’s not worth the buck for what one can get with other laptops now. All I have to say is do your research.

This is my second gaming laptop, i can say that is amazing. The only isue that i found is that if you touch any part of the computer you let your fingerprints on it. Battery life is normal for this tipy of computer, average i can use it without connecting to Ac for about 2h.

Awesome! I'm a software engineer by trade, and was developing on my son's Surface Pro with only 4gb of RAM... it was awful. This has the specs I need to be able to run beefy programs that support development. I also love me some video games, so that's an added bonus. :)

Great laptop, includes a webcam which is perfect for me because of zoom meetings. Also the keyboard feels amazing for a laptop and every game runs smooth with no issues. The 240 Hz display is also a huge bonus for e-sports titles. Overall great laptop highly recommend it.

Poor Build Quality and Heat Management

TL;DR: It's bad and you (MSI) should feel bad!
I am not impressed with this laptop. Just for reference, I test out a fairly large number of higher end gaming laptops, and this is one of the worst I have used to date, particularly at this price point. I have been using a 2020 Zephyrus G14 for about a year and given its popularity I will include some comparisons here:
Screen
Decent, but quite a bit dimmer than the G14 (or the Alienware M15 R1, or the Razer Blade Base) that I have been using. I am sure the response rates are better than my G14, but I do not play enough high paced games to tell. In my daily workload (lots of typing and occasionally playing large open world games) the G14 was definitely nicer looking.
Keyboard + Mouse
They are... fine. The keyboard felt nice and was easy to use. The glass touchpad is nice, but was somewhat inaccurate. It also clicks if you press down just below the keyboard... which does not instill confidence in the build quality.
Noise + Heat
Awful. This is where this laptop totally fails. It ran hot and incredibly loud, particularly compared with the G14. Even at idle, the fans were very audible. I set up a custom fan curve and even then it would ram up as the processor would get too hot and need to ram up the fans to cool down. Not a laptop capable of quiet office use.
Performance
The overall performance was decent, but the CPU (I7-11800H) struggled to match my last generation Ryzen 9 4900HS. Running similar benchmarks it also ran ~10 C hotter than my G14 despite the larger chassis. The GPU had decent performance, but was running in the low 80s with the CPU in the 90s to keep it up. Overall, it looks like Intel's H45 chips still require too much power to compete against Ryzen in these thin and light platforms. Given the power scaling differences, Intel might beat out Ryzen in larger/thicker designs (still waiting on more reviews to see if this is universal or just specific to this implementation).
Build Quality
It was poor as it was generally flexy when being picked up off the desk. The flex was particularly notable when the laptop was turned over. You can press on the bottom cover and it will flex and hit the heat sync below it, which is crazy! The keyboard deck also flexes a bit, with a particularly large amount of flex just above the touchpad. I know this is supposed to be an improvement over the older GS65, but compared against other laptops in this price range it is absolutely not acceptable.
Battery Life
Mediocre. With the screen at 70% brightness and 60 hz on power saver I was just able to eek out ~5.5 hours doing basic office work. Comparing it against my G14 where I can easily get ~8 or 9 hours it seems somewhat low. Even my older Alienware M15 R1 could get about 7, so this is not a great result.
Overall, not impressed at all. I get that I have somewhat high standards, but there are many better options within the $1500 - $2000. Razer, Asus, and HP all have better options available. It is also worth noting that AMD likely still remains a better option than Intel in the portable workstation / gaming laptop segment. I do prefer the feature set that Intel provides, but it is not worth the trade off in heat and efficiency, at least for my use case.

I was so excited when I first got the laptop, it was kinda overwhelming at the start but I got used to it, I really enjoy the graphic quality and just how much I can do on it besides gaming. the mouse pad does confuse me when Im trying to click something but it drags it instead.

I was needing to upgrade my computer and was looking for a laptop that could replace my old desktop. This fits the bill perfectly. I hooked it to a MSI monitor, now it replaces my old desktop for gaming and I can still have it portable.

Such a great deal compared to other laptops like the macbook pro. Compared it to the most expensive 13" macbook pro and it had better specs for a cheaper price. Definitely glad I found this laptop before buying the macbook.

The hinge broke multiple times, but it was covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Eventually, it stopped charging. Had geeksquad warranty, sent it in for repair, but they couldn't and at the end of the day they only sent $1050 out of the $1550 I paid for the item. Very frustrating as this is a delicate laptop and I paid for the warranty thinking it would cover the damages, but at the end of the day it wasn't worth it.

Great gaming alternative desktop basically. Battery life is my only issue as far as laptop but if you can keep a plug in by then your good to go.
