Customers are saying

Customers often highlight the MAG X870E Tomahawk WIFI motherboard's excellent overall performance and extensive connectivity options, praising its many features and user-friendly overclocking capabilities. However, some users have reported issues with certain M.2 slots, specifically concerning compatibility and speed limitations with newer processors. The board's strong points appear to outweigh these reported drawbacks for most users.

Excellent board, good WiFi range, and what make this difference in this board is the built in cooling for all the plug in components.

This product is super nice, you can really feel the quality of the motherboard. The ease release pcie gpu slot is very helpful when you have big graphics cards. No issues at all and it looks really cool with the green accents. Loving it so far!

I've only had it a few days, but so far it's been great! The main reason I choose it was because it was one of the few AM5 motherboards that had what I felt was good lane sharing. The only thing that is shared is the 2nd M2 slot and USB4 with the option to disable one or the other for full bandwidth. It also has 4 M2 slots which was important to me for future upgrades. The other big reasons I picked was it also had S/PDIF out, great USB connectivity options, POST code LED, BIOS Flashback, anda clear CMOS button. All excellent features to have! It also has great VRMs, a 5x16 PCIE slot as well as 2 other PCI slots, and a large amount of headers on the board for all your expansion needs. The BIOS has been solid as well. If you want a great AM5 motherboard for a reasonable cost this is an excellent option.

    A Solid Board...

Okay, let's begin. This is a solid MSI board and if you have enjoyed the MAG series boards, then this one will not disappoint. Installation of CPU presented a bit of a challenge since the socket was not clearly marked where the "corner" was. However, if you call up the manual on your phone, the diagram will show you. If it is your intention to keep the board, make sure you get the CHK code before you mount it, because when you do product registration with MSI, you will need it and the serial number. Installation of M.2 SSDs is pretty user friendly, and if you are populating all 4 M.2 slots, then be warned that the M.2_2 slot shares a lane with PCI-e x4 and that goes to the 40Gbps usb slots in the back. If you use the M.2_2 slot, you need to be aware that your bandwidth will be reduced to x2. Another thing to note is that the M.2_2 slot will not operate with an AMD 8000 series processor. M.2_1, 2_3 and 2_4 will still operate though, but if you want to populate all four slots, then a 7000 or 9000 series Ryzen CPU would be the way to go. It has 2 USB 2 headers on the board, pretty standard, and 2 USB 3 headers as well, which is a change from the TUF board I had which only had one USB 3 header on the board. The number of USB ports on the I\O panel are good, but the color coding makes it easy to plug the right peripheral into the right slot. There is a 5G ethernet port I am itching to try out. once faster service becomes widely available and the WiFi adapter does a good job maintaining connectivity with my gateway. The first boot up took some time because the board had to get used to the DDR5 sticks and bios has to determine the boot drive and all of this takes a few minutes. Once the board learns what it has installed, then my boot times dropped to about 18-30 seconds, and that's with a Ryzen 9 7800 and G.Skill Trident Z Neo sticks set to 7200 MT/s. The PCI-e5x16 slot is ready for the next generation of video cards, but if you have the money for one of those, then you can splurge and get a Carbon WiFi board, or a MEG Godlike, just keep in mind how many SSDs you intend to install and research if those boards have the M.2 slots to accommodate your needs. All in all, it's a solid board for casual gamers, and MSI tends to stand behind their products, which makes the RMA process a whole lot easier. One negative, if we can call it that is it is a bit pricey now due to supply chain concerns. I purchased it at $299, but now it's about $100 more.

Great board, tons of both internal and external connectors. Setup was simple and went easily along with installing all components into both the motherboard and the case. Wifi is probably acceptable, although I do not currently use it.

Decent board with a wide variety of features, good vrm cooling, daisy chained prom21 chips if you have a lot to connect through USB, plenty of PCIe for expansion for a workhorse computer, two of the nvme's have 5.0 speed. Be aware, the qualcomm wireless module in this board, and the drivers (bluetooth 5.4 and wifi 7) don't support Windows 10. Period. So, the board itself isn't compatible with windows 10 if you want the wireless and bluetooth to work. It's not mentioned outright, I had to dig into the drivers to find this out. I run Win 10 LTSC IoT and Linux and will eventually need to swap my module out for an intel AX210. Also had an issue with ethernet not working when I first booted up and had to do the CMOS reset trick. Apparently a known issue - not cool for a $300+ motherboard. I shouldn't be troubleshooting as my first interaction with a fancy new pc. After CMOS reset, has been rock solid though. EXPO settings worked fine with my G.skill Flare memory. Haven't dabbled with PBO and undervolting yet, but everything you could want is there. If you go into using this motherboard with a Win 11 system planned you may have a smoother experience.

This board offers a lot for the price compared to other x870e boards. But there's one big issue currently that will likely cause you frustration. On the plus side, there's a ton of I/O options on the back. The easy lock / release for PCI-E slot 1 is awesome. The wifi antenna is far and away better than my previous motherboard's 3rd party. BIOS offers a lot of easy to access settings. The M2 SSD quick-release tabs are so nice, as are the tool-less heatsink panels for them. However, this board hasn't been perfect: The M2_1 slot has a notorious issue in which it boots with PCI-E 1x4 interface speed, vs 5x4 or even 4x4. To get the proper interface speed, you have to reboot over and over - 4 or 5 times each time to launch with the correct interface speed. Take a quick google search for "PCIe x870e tomahawk M2_1" and read more on it, how wide-spread it is, and what can be done about it. MSI Support claims it's an RMA issue, but then released a BIOS update that resolved the issue for multiple users - then immediately removed that BIOS update from being available for download. I'm sure it'll be resolved at some point, but it definitely isn't today. Just FYI.

The MSI MAG X870E TOMAHAWK WiFi impressed me with its excellent connectivity—especially the dual USB4 ports and Wi-Fi 7—which made my setup more efficient and future-proof. I chose it over others for its feature set at a great price point, and it absolutely meets my needs. Performance with DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 has been rock solid. Strengths include build quality and versatility, though the shared M.2 bandwidth and limited full-speed PCIe slots are minor drawbacks. Overall, a great value for a high-end AM5 board.

It was time to upgrade my system and i wanted to go team red with a 7800x3d. This mobo was top of my list of choices dut to the number of m.2 slots and usb ports. Runs well and the debugging led is a nice addition. The only issue is it would be nice to have a full list of debug codes, as documentation only has a partial listing. The board runs fantastic and hasnt had an issue since installation.

Really good motherboard so far. Performs well with my 9800X3D and it worked out of the box, no need to update the MOBO. Use M2 slots 1 and 4 if you got M2 drives and leave the rest alone or you might run into some performance problems especially slot 3 because it shares bandwidth with the fastest Type C port in the back, if you're not gonna use the type c port though you can turn off the Type C port in mobo and have full speed dedicated to the #3 M2 slot. Also a heads up, the Wifi on the board will not work unless you're on windows 11, if you plan on sticking with windows 10 make sure you are hardwired or get your own wireless card. It's not MSI fault honestly, windows 10 simply doesn't support WIFI 7. Overall I'm pretty happy.
