Mushi Shi is one of those rare shows that tries to do it differently at a risk to its own longevity. Most of the time when you watch anime you expect fast paced action, robots, aliens, ridiculous plot complications, or in other words a silly romp. Or, on the other hand, some take only a few aspects and run with it. Mushi Shi does none. Here is a thoughtful, thought-provoking, slow-paced, character and story driven anime who's central figures aren't the weird and bizarre but the humans that the weird and bizarre are happening to. The story follows Ginko, a medic of sorts that specializes in treating a strange, spirit phenomenon called Mushi-Shi that are not unlike bacteria or viruses. They're neither good nor evil, but their effects can be either beautiful or devastating. Each episode is an independent story that follows his exploits. What results is alternatively a scathing and beautiful reflection of the human spirit. As a fan of intense action and/or violent anime, this show took me by surprise. It comes highly recommended.
