Awesome camera, great improvement over the D3100

24.2 megapixels for $700. That is just incredible. I had the Nikon D3100 and loved it to death, and when I got this camera it was just remarkable how different and similar it was. Its performance in every way is completely different and using it is very much the same. The screen is absolutely crisp and clear, which, other than image quality, is the most noticeable improvement over the D3100. I also notice that the battery lasts very long and much longer than it did in the D3100 when taking pictures and video. Also live view doesn't time out like it did with the D3100 and it doesn't seem to be as taxing to the battery life. The manual movie controls are a new and fantastic feature. If you are going to film a time lapse and speed it up, you do not want to use an automatic mode because the exposure will flicker when the footage is set up. However, for time lapse videos the camera only records for 20 minutes, although that is twice as long as the D3100 could record for. I also love the new 3.5mm stereo mic jack. I bought the Nikon ME-1 stereo microphone and I love it, the sound is spectacular. The built in mic actually provides stellar sound as well, but it records in mono rather than stereo and it picks up the noises made by your hands on the camera a bit more than the ME-1 does. I would say that the only downsides to this camera are noise at high ISO settings, (but this only occurs when there is not enough light, if you use a high ISO to take a picture with a flash of say people in a poorly lit room, not much noise will appear in that photo. However, if you use ISO 100 when there is not enough light, there will be absolutely no noise even in the spots of the photo that are completely black.) and the 20 minute video limit, but I also have to say that for the price, I would expect a video limit and 20 minutes is very generous. I would also expect noise at high ISO settings, and I think that the amount of noise you will get is really quite low considering the price of this camera. I love this camera and I recommend it to all who read this review. And if you are thinking about getting a better Nikon than this, then I think you should wait until the next D7000 and D5100's come out, because I think that this camera is ahead of the current versions of those cameras in some ways.

First of all, I've never in my life written a review for a product before. However, I loved this camera so much I felt like it deserves my effort to right a review because it truly is amazing. This is my first DSLR camera. I did a lot of research and asked around before purchasing and I was recommended this camera. I purchased as a bundle with a bag, memory card, cleaning pen, and 55-200mm lens. After watching a few tutorials online, and with no prior experience in photography, I was quickly able to start taking amazing quality pictures. It's very easy to learn and use and if you don't want to put in the effort you can always just use the automatic mode. I do recommend getting the 55-200mm lens as well. It's really great for outdoors and getting close shots without having to be too close to the subject. The lens it comes with is great too especially for portrait shots. I was really surprised by the quality of video this camera can take. If you mess with the fps and you have the right lighting you can really get a great recording. Final thing I recommend getting with this camera is the Wu-1a wifi adapter. You'll be able to control the camera from your smart phone and quickly transfer photos to your smart phone wirelessly to share your photos on social media. got this as a present for my dad for father's day as an upgrade from his point and shoot. the camera was easy to set up and a breeze to use. it is light in the hands, even with the lens. the low light performance is quite nice as well. pop up flash not needed as much, if you know how to tweak your ISO settings. it produces much better pictures than his old camera and he can put it on auto to treat is as a better point and shoot until he learns more manual functions :) if you are looking for a starter dslr, this is great jumping point!

    Fantastic Camera for beginner/affordable Secondary

I have been shooting with this camera for about 2 months and i have basically learned on it with help of some online videos and magazine articles etc. to gain knowledge on fundamentals. In other words, i am not a pro! However for me, going from shooting pictures on camera phones since they started putting cameras in phones, to a short stint with a Panasonic bridge camera (which was also very good for it's purpose), to finally going to the big boy DSLR has been great. This camera has the biggest sensor you can buy for any new camera (APS-C or DX) under $1200 or so, those sensors being FX for Nikon, or "full frame". It captures awesome pictures even in dim light and it has a high Mega Pixel count which is great for printing large photos or for me, cropping into photos to essentially zoom into the picture and it will STILL be clear, even doing this (to a point)! I have used ISO 1600 and even 3200 and there is noise, of course as there would be with almost any camera but it is not obnoxious and is well controlled. I'll even upload a picture taken with ISO 3200 just to show this rather extreme range (most shots will not need to be taken over ISO 800, unless there is very little light and/or you want to shoot at high aperture (f-stops). I have both the kit lens and the 35mm DX f/1.8 AF-S G which i also bought a best buy, it is one of the most affordable DX lenses and also is much faster than the kit lens, f/1.8 compared to the lowest-f/3.5 for the 18-55 Kit lens which is a considerable difference in available light and of course, background blur bokehhh :) ! This camera is relatively basic, there's no built in WIFI, the LCD screen does not flip or swivel but is sharp, the physical camera body does not have image stabilization- if you need it-its important on long telephoto lenses and long shutter speeds-slower than 1/60s or so- the LENS will have to have it BUILT IN (It's called Vibration Reduction VR, on Nikon's) the kit lens will have VR, there are "only" 11 auto focus points- i personally haven't had a issue with this but if you photograph sports or take pictures with a lot of movement in your scene this may be an issue and you will have to buy a higher end body, and really any other gripe would be nit picking and even still this camera is amazing for its price point and i tried to make this review easy to understand, but put as much information as possible. If you have any issue understanding just look up the terms online or watch some videos as i have! The picture i've uploaded is of my dog and isn't by any means the sharpest (the shutter speed was too slow) but plenty of people have put up pretty pictures showing the camera's prowess but this will show you the pretty remarkable NOISE PERFORMANCE which is also very important!! It was taken with the 35mm DX lens at night with only the TV light in the room.

Great Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) Camera

My daughter was getting married and I needed a camera for the wedding. But, I wanted a versatile camera that I could used for the wedding, action shots, landscapes, astronomy pictures, sunsets, wild life shots, and on and on. We have had point-and-shoot cameras in the past (even really good, expensive ones), and they just did not have the flexibility and capability I was looking for. I wanted a DSLR and a few lenses - at least to start. Previously, when searching for a DSLR, I found the prices were in the $1000+ - a bit more than I could afford. However, I was pleased to find the Nikon D3200 was both a high quality and reasonably-priced camera. The wedding photos came out very nice. I gave the camera to a 12-year old to run around and get pictures. She had no problem getting great shots, even though she was not experienced with cameras. However, getting low-light and night shots is not as easy as my film-based SLR from years past. Maybe I need to spend more time twiddling dials and playing with adjustments, but the camera has a few ideas about the kinds of pictures I should be taking and it is a battle to do something else. The flash it has is not bad, but tends to leave the people outside the center of the shot in shadows - I guess I will need a separate flash for proper area fill. Pluses - simple pictures are simple and the camera is easy to use. More complex pictures (such as a deer in the woods at dusk) fool the camera and there are so many options to tweak it becomes difficult to get the shot quickly and smoothly. In addition, the auto-focus can get confused in lower light levels and in diverse landscapes. Since there are several auto-focus modes, maybe I am not getting the right one. All in all, the camera is very good, the image quality of daylight pictures is awesome (low-light tends to be grainy). The lenses are very nice and easy to put on and take off. In short, this is a very good entry point SLR for the more demanding photographer.

A great camera for someone starting DSLR

This camera does tend to have a fair amount of noise, but that is really not a big deal to an average user. That's what the more $1000+ cameras are for. That being said, this camera is really nice for those just learning how to use DSLR cameras. For the price of the camera, the quality is great! Any sharpness issues I've come across has been my fault for general camera shake. It's capable of taking great pictures of my pets indoors and outdoors and whatever other thing I decide to go out to shoot. So far that has been still life, nature, landscape, dog sports, and even night photography. This camera is great for me because it has really helped me learn how to use it through its easy to access guide menus. If I am curious what a thing does in the menu, I just press a button and the camera explains it. This camera has no extra bells or whistles which is also nice because it's not overly daunting to learn how to use it. Of course, because of its basic build one can outgrow this camera fairly quickly if they find themselves really wanting to do more with their photography. But this should not be a big deal for an average user at all. With a few choice lenses, anyone can pick this thing up and have a blast! I highly suggest anyone who wants to try their hand at DSLR photography should start off with the D3200 or Nikons D5200. This has been a great camera for me and I'm so glad I got it!

This is a great camera for those who are looking to have more control over their photos but do not want or need excessive features. While there are better cameras out there(for a price), this camera gives you exactly what you need to learn how to take great photos without overwhelming you with options you are not going to use. This camera takes much better pictures than a point-and-shoot or a cell phone and allows for a lot more freedom with the settings. If you are not comfortable using the manual settings there is also an automatic mode that works very well. There is a learning curve to using this camera but if you take the time to learn how to use it you will be impressed with what you can do.

This is a nice little DSLR camera that I got for a good price. While I prefer the versatility and features of more advanced units, it is perfect for casual shooting around the home, nature walks, and informal gatherings. I'd bought the D3200 for when I went into situations where damage or destruction to my more expensive camera bodies seemed a good possibility (and I buy Geek Squad Black Tie Protection on just about everything). The lighter weight was also a nice feature for when my (senior citizen age) mother, 100 pound 5' tall sister-in-law, or very athletic friend and her toddler son decide to come shooting with me; hoisting a kid in one arm and a camera in the other is a tough feat for anyone to master. Bottom Line: if you're looking for a nice, entry-level DSLR that won't break the bank, this is a great choice, especially with it being phased out for the D3300... the D3300 is a fine camera (feels a bit more plastic-like) with new features, but if you don't need "all the bells and whistles of the new entry-level" you'll save a chunk of change on the D3200.

I dreamed about this camera for two years, and, although Nikon has recently offered more updated models, I was thrilled to find this one on sale for $449 at Best Buy. However, I had later regrets for not purchasing the one-step-up sale, offering the same camera for $499 with a 55-200mm lens. So, a few weeks later, I came back and purchased--under a separate transaction--a 55-200mm lens. Fortunately, it was offered to me for half price, ($150, as opposed to $300). Yes, I now realize that I should have purchased the package deal, thereby saving $100, so I recommend that to anyone else out there to buy the bundle. Don't make the same mistake I did; the camera is definitely worth it. But the best part of is, the Nikon 3200 comes with an external mike input--not many cameras do. So you can either record movies with a standard lapel mike, or go for the Nikon Shotgun type. (I have both). The only criticism is that, I wish that they would have provided audio earphone monitoring, other than just a visual audio meter. Would be very nice to be able to sound-monitor what is being recorded. Anyway, most of my comments here have to do with movie recording. However, I assure you that I do both, movies and still photos. The Nikon D3200 takes extremely beautiful photos, and I am very pleased with the results. Hey--go out and buy the thing while the sale lasts.

Got this amazing little camera 2 days ago to go with my D300s, and taking a reasonable amount of both outdoor and indoor pictures. I must say its a great camera. Amazing image quality and great high ISO performance. The autofocus is a bit slow, but focus is accurate. I wish it was a bit bigger in size, because i have big hands, and sadly, Nikon does not make a battery grip for this camera. I also wish it had dual manual command wheels like my D300s. It makes it loads easier. Over all, i'm very pleased with this camera. I took this image today with my Nikon 50mm 1.8. Its such a sharp camera, especially with this paired lens.

This camera has been absolutely great! I don't have any background experience in photography but when we had our daughter I decided that I wanted to dabble in it a little so I had all of our best memories in beautiful pictures. The auto mode is great to start and I've branched out and learned so much more from the other modes just taking it with me everywhere and playing with the settings. The images turn out crystal clear, the details are amazing, and we've even had them blown up to put on the wall with no issues at all. I couldn't have asked for a better camera or an easier interface to use starting out and I have some pretty amazing photos of our little girl that we'll cherish forever.

I've been using this camera for approximately a month now and I absolutely love it. I also purchased the Nikkor 55x300mm lens because of the type of photography that I do. There was a little bit of a learning curve from my old digital camera but nothing a few you tube tutorials can't help you out with. The only negative thing I can really say about this camera, is the flash isn't the best in the world. If you plan on shooting a lot of low light situations I would highly recommend purchasing a flash.

I love this camera. It is a little expensive but you're purchasing a professional camera. It is very easy to use and if you get the guarantee you can bring it into Best Buy and they will replace it if anything happens. I had a smudge on the inside of my viewfinder about 3 weeks after I purchased it and I went in and they gave me a whole new camera. It's also very light!

To put this review in perspective...I'm no pro, in fact my knowledge about taking photos with anything other than pulling out my smart phone, is close to zero. So, with that in mind...what I think about this camera. Photo quality is very good. In fact...its great. Once you learn about all the settings, and modes, you realize there is so much more to a great photo then pulling out your cell phone for a quick shot. It takes time and effort, learning how to use a DSLR, but once you do, once you get that first GREAT SHOT, the feeling of accomplishment you get, feeling of pride, makes it worth the time and money you will put into this. If you are like me, and are coming from a point and shoot and or cell phone, and tired of bad pics....this is the kit to get. The lens is great for everyday shots. The build quality is there, and its a good price for what you get. Stick with it, don't get frustrated, you will learn how to use this, and once you do, your kids plays, your holidays, vacations, all the moments you want to remember, will be better for it.

So far I love it. I'm a novice when it comes to taking pictures, so the auto feature is great. One of my neighbors has the 3100, so he was able to show me quite a bit about the camera that i would have otherwise not known. Once he pointed a few things out to me, my manual pictures are starting to turn out a lot better. I don't know enough about it to point out any negative features, but so far i have been very impressed. I can't wait to go shoot some deer with it! I went to an airshow the first weekend after purchasing, and even at a pretty good distance the planes look pretty crisp. The pictures per second is fast enough that it almost looks like a video in rapid succession. The kit lens is not a bad lens, it is just designed for a broad range of pictures. This is a perfect camera for a beginner to learn photography. Also, I read some reviews where people mentioned poor battery life. I must say that I have not noticed this. I charged it up the first day, and I've taken well over 1000 pictures while playing with the different settings and turning it off and on again and I haven't had to charge it again yet. I've had the camera for little over a month. I gave it a 4 for Ease of use because of the many options. It can be a bit challenging getting the settings right for an amateur. I was tempted to give it a 4 on value just because it is so expensive, but there are a lot of *higher end* cameras that cost a lot more that do the same thing. So it's a good buy for what you get.

I have been using Nikons for years and as of late using a D7000 for bird photography with a Sigma 150-500 lens. I bought the D3200 yesterday as a backup and let me tell you, the quality of the photos area as good if not better than what I've been getting with the D7000. Very surprised. The only problem is Adobe has yet to release camera raw with D3200 support.
