I'm so terribly unhappy with my camera purchase. I ordered it, we left for vacation and I didn't really look at or use it for days after. It's not what I expected. It's just too difficult to use.

Very limited control over settings. Best for beginner, frustrating for others.

The D3500 is, as you had mentioned, Nikon's DSLR for someone who wants to start their passion for Photography. It does have options that allow you to have complete control over your settings, however. For example, you can set your camera's lens to manual focus, as well as set the camera to Manual Exposure mode (M) and have complete control over your shutter and aperture settings. Nikon

I recently decided that I want to take up a new hobby. I went to Best Buy after having checked out a couple of cameras online. I am glad that I did go into the store as the Nikon D3500 seemed to be a better fit for me rather than the Canon Rebel T6. Both are entry level cameras, however the Nikon D3500 felt better in my hands. So far I have only played around with the camera trying to get more familiar with taking better photos. No complaints yet with this camera. The image quality is pretty great!

OK Camera but Disappointing in One Way

Pros: Photos as good as my Coolpix P600. Cons: No IR remote. I bought this camera on Black Friday with the 18-55mm lens as an upgrade from point-and-shoot cameras to a DSLR. I skipped the 70-300mm kit lens because it doesn't have VR, something that benefits telephoto lenses the most. A VR version of the 70-300mm lens is available and worth the extra cost. I'm disappointed that the ML-L3 IR remote that works with most Nikon DSLRs doesn't work with this one. Why would Nikon make a camera that requires a non-Nikon accessory like a smartphone in order to use all its capabilities? Even the new Coolpix P900 can use that remote. The new "special effects" option doesn't make up for the lack of the IR remote. Maybe they could bring back the mechanical cable release like I had on my Nikon film cameras.
