My older camera (still using) is a D200. So definitely this is going down to a purely consumer level rather than the prosumer level. However, the specs for the D5300 on the component level are at about the D7xxx level. So far I have been very impressed with the quality and capability of the D5300. The ISO sensitivity is many levels above the D200 and I can get much better quality pictures with this sensor and processor combination. Although the ruggedness of this camera is not up there with the D200, it has been tough enough to stand a fall from shoulder level onto thin carpeting with no problem (plastic bayonet on lens broke, but was able to replace that). It is nice that it is significantly lighter as well. It makes it much more pleasant to handle all day. As for features, they are all there. I usually shoot aperture priority, but all the normal modes are there. Overall, after about a month of use, definitely very happy with this purchase. I also decided (and still believe so) that the touchscreen (D5500) would not have been worth the extra couple hundred $. Save that money for better glass.

This is my first DSLR camera, after a long hiatus from a Nikon F5 Pro Camera that I reluctantly traded in for cash over 15 years ago. I vowed to get a D1... well, obviously, we are up to D5 , which is about three times the price of what I got my new F5. While cameras have advanced, I haven't. This d5300 is just perfect for my re-entry into photography. While it is not as fast to shoot live action sports, it has all of the tools that I need. I can still get auto fucus through the Lenses, if I choose. It still has the weight ( while not weather proof), and is wifi. I have used nikkor lenses to shoot portraits and interior scenes over the past weeks and I am in heaven allover again. I am sure, as I advance, I will pick up a pro camera, and keep this one as a camera. Videos are professional quality as well. While this has an adjustable viewfinder screen, that makes it looks like a consumer model, I only use that for video shooting, preferring to use the larger screen for my settings, oppose to the optional live views for my still shots. The pop up flash? , well it is a consumer model, however it does take a hot-shoe flash. It is simple to use, with professional quality....

I'm 42 and have gone through my fair share of point and shoot cameras which have often left me unsatisfied. I need something fast that can take a great picture regardless of my surroundings. I think I've found that with the Nikon D5300. Out of the box and paired with the Nikon 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX NIKKOR Zoom Lens (a GREAT all purpose lens) I was able to get great pictures using the automatic settings. The included instructions get you somewhat familiar with all of the buttons and features but if you're a DSLR beginner like me, you're going to need additional instruction. Just go to YouTube for that. There are some great instructional videos on there for this exact model!

I had a D5200 (it's for sale now!) for about 4 months before they announced the D5300. It's essentially the same camera, but with built-in WiFi (for remote control & picture sharing) and GPS. Faster sensor, no low-pass filter are both nice, but tough really to notice the difference. Fantastic image quality, in-camera options. Battery life is good, body is rugged enough.

Surprise gift for my husband on Father's Day and he loved it! He wouldn't let it go and took pictures. He said he was shocked how it came out perfectly with the additional Len I bought to fit in the nikon body camera. He was very pleased, loved the quality, ease, light and great to use.

I bought this camera for it's size and weight. I shoot mostly urban and street with the D5300. This camera with my 50mm f/1.4 is a great combo. Image quality is stellar and the controls are just right for on the fly adjustments. The one thing I will recommend is to use a high quality lens on this camera. It will quickly out resolve lower end glass.

After researching how it has most everything that matters, purchasing it, and using it; I have found I don't mind using buttons instead of a touch screen. I've shot great pics, using it with a Nikon 77-200mm 2.8.

Purchased it for my wife for Christmas. We've been using it as much as we can. Great quality and very easy to use. It is capable of uploading pictures right to your phone although you do have to download the ap onto your phone. Felt it is a bit too pricey seeing that it is not much different from the 5200 version which is $799 I believe. I paid around $1400 for this camera. I would say go with the 5200 if you are on a budget. Pretty much the same camera except a few changes added to it such as a little bit better quality and the phone uploading ap. Overall great camera just a bit too pricey.

This is a very easy camera to use. It fits well in your hand and is well balanced. It comes with a lot of manual settings but I find that the auto settings take a very nice picture. I got this to take pictures of the kids at home, games, programs, etc. and it works really well.

It takes great quality pictures. And the wifi is awesome.

I am getting into shooting events and wanted to upgrade my camera at a price I could afford. This one is it. It has everything I need. From fast shutter speed to WiFi to being able to shoot in virtual darkness. I am loving my camera and look forward to learning moe about it and shooting as much as I can.

We had the 3200 before & loved it but were enticed by the direct camera-to-internet feature of the 5300, since we do a lot of photo- posting to Instagram & Facebook. We were not disappointed! The photo quality is superb & the Wifi feature is simple to connect. You will love this camera!

very happy with the purchase.Very compact and easy to handle for a SLR.Price is so affordable compared to the feature and flexibility you get from this SLR. Probably better than many SLR with 1k price tag in market.

This Nikon camera is so powerful because it has the capability in sending beautiful pictures via WiFi. It's light and easy to use. This camera is also especially well-suited to the beginner professional photographers. It has so much functions such as zooming and contrasting. The resolution of the pictures is marvelous. Love what this Nikon to do for us in every day's life.

I purchased this camera about a month ago I am loving It, the only thing is the placement of some of the buttons like the shooting mode other than that I'm very happy with this camera.

I bought this camera to replace my Nikon D70. The difference in features and picture quality is phenomenal. I use the camera just for fun, mainly when I go on vacations. Loving it so far!

I'm a pro photographer and wanted a new camera, but didn't want to invest a small fortune. This camera body was just what I wanted/needed and the price was right. I've taken roughly 6,000 photos within the first month of owning the camera and I'm VERY pleased. It's easy to use (very similar to other Nikons I've owned) and processes images quickly. Images are very clear. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.
