This camera is a major upgrade from the original D3100 I had initially. The flip out HD screen, the almost double megapixel count.......It is wonderful!

I really liked this camera, but the deeper I fell into the photography quicksand I realized I needed more options with flash photography. I upgraded.

I'm a sports writer and I bought this camera for work in the field. It's been awesome so far, especially in tough low light situations.

Love my D5500. Very compact but has front focusing issues with my 35mm 1.8G lens. D7200 is a better camera.

I own the 5d mark3, 6d, 70d & the new 7d mark2. Two of those I mentioned are full frame and I pair all of them up with fast glass (Canon L series). I know of other friends that have recently switched from Canon to Nikon and I figured with all the positive reviews I've read on this one I'd give it a shot since its new and relatively low priced. Let me say I absolutely fell in love with this little camera. I took it out of the box, charged the battery and shot three indoor basketball games at different gyms the same day I bought it. The weight of the camera is fantastic, it does not have a magnesium alloy body so it does not feel uncomfortable/heavy around your neck, and those heavy cameras and lenses aren't fun to lug around either. It's deceptively small, which I really like too. The pictures were superb, and that says a lot with the challenging lighting these gyms have inside. The camera dials, weight and size are beginner like, but don't be fooled because the results are simply amazing. I'm stunned to be writing this review with such an inexpensive camera setup, but the photos speak for themselves. It's important to note that I paired this d5500 with the 1.8 35mm&50mm Nikon glass I purchased when I bought the camera - another Nikon marvel at a low price. I'll end this review mentioning I didn't use the kit lens at all, it's way too slow for indoor sports and would never be tack sharp for most portraits, maybe it would be ok for sunny outdoor soccer games? If you feel that the more you spend means it has to be better, or it needs to weigh a lot to justify a price kinda like I used to be - go for it and waste your money, otherwise buy this little joy with a pair of Nikon 1.8 primes and stun your friends while saving a lot of cash. Good luck!

I may have had more problems because I am used to the Sony system. I felt this Nikon was not nearly as user friendly.

This camera is wonderful. A few more bells and whistles than I expected but has been money well spent. I am by no means a professional photographer and this camera allows me to take great shots. Once i take their free training course I will be able to take even better photos. Great thing is this camera allows me to do basic photography but has bells and whistles that will allow me to do even better later on. So this camera in great for now and several years in the future!

    Best Picture Quality Ever...

First, I'd like to say I do not work for Bestbuy nor any camera company. I've taken commercial photography in college and been taking pictures my entire life. I have had many previous top brand pro-cameras and I have to admit after taking many test pictures with the Nikon D5500 it produces the sharpest digital pictures ever, day or night.

This is a great entry-mid level DSLR!!! I'm relatively new to DSLR photography, and searched for a new camera for MONTHS. Read every EVERY review, from baby beginner to higher DX, considered FXk, mirrorless options, and kept coming back to this. I was worried, since Nikon is releasing an update to this camera this year, but honestly, this was the most bang for my buck out there on the market. I am so so happy with my choice. It is a great little camera. It's great for beginner DSLRs, but also for hobby photographers as well. Its lightweight, easy to use, and super fast (faster than a LOT of the pricier options out there, which is why I went with it ultimately). I do a lot of nature, pet, and family photography, so I needed something that could keep up with my lifestyle. Photographs are great quality for this price range. The Wifi app could be a little more functional, but honestly, no major camera company to date has made picture transfer as easy as Apple has with iCloud, so my expectations are pretty high :). For this camera's price and performance, its an easy complaint to have. I'm here to take pictures, after all. Its not even worth docking a star over. I bought it with the kit 18-55mm and 55mm-300mm telephoto lens. I personally don't like the 18-55mm lens. It's too slow for action photography, and anything but bright daylight. Photos look good, but I felt like it would be easier to take pictures with my iPhone, if it was darker (even cloudy), or my dog was running around, if I was inside. Its decent for a kit lens, but its a kit lens. I ended up buying a friend's pricey 17-55mm wide angle f/2.8 IF-ED lens that he outgrew for a deep discount, and sold the 18-55mm kit lens. I felt like I was seeing the ocean for the first time haha. I got the 35mm f/1.8mm prime lens on sale for $150 (its a steal at $199 too). The 35mm prime and 17-55mm wide angle lenses are the only ones I really use now, unless I'm shooting from a far distance. If you're already into photography and know your way around a camera, and switching from another brand, skip the kit lens, get a refurbed 17-55 f/2.8 IF-ED lens. If you're a beginner, not sure if you're ready to shell out $600+ for a lens, the kit lenses will suit you just fine. If you are a beginner and only going to spend money on two lenses, I'd say don't get a telephoto lens, but do consider the 35mm f/1.8mm prime lens. You'll be stunned at the quality of photos you take.

    Excellent beginner camera

The title says beginner camera, but the D5500 is a step above beginner; a big step. This is my first venture into the DSLR world, and I have hardly put the camera down since we brought it home. I have fallen in love with it quickly. So far, I've taken shots of the sunset, my kids, the dogs, and my beautiful wife. All of the shots are gorgeous once you get used to the settings and framing them properly. I recently began shooting in raw and AP to really get the most out of my shots. The touch screen is very intuitive and fluid (great for the smartphone generation). The built-in WiFi is also a nice feature, but not a huge selling point. I haven't explored the video recording features yet, so I can't comment on those. Overall, this is an amazing camera for the price range and won't leave any novice photographers disappointed.

I don't have much training with advanced cameras, and this camera was very user friendly with many great automatic options. I am still learning the special settings and have gotten many compliments on my pictures! Love the wifi feature too - makes it much easier for me to put pictures on my phone anywhere to add to Instagram. Great investment - I suspect this camera will last me many many years. This camera is my baby now :)
