Easy to use, versatile in kitchen
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was inspired to try out the Ninja Instant Cooker because I have been cooking with a standard pressure cooker and a crock pot for many years. I give the Instant Cooker five stars, but the printed materials rate only a three! On opening the box, I was pleased to find that I had received TWO gaskets, one light and one dark, to separate sweet from savory so as not to transmit smells or tastes. Setting up the appliance took moments and I first ran it through the recommended practice run with water only. I highly recommend you do this! My caution is to make certain that when you release the pressure that it is not beneath your upper cabinets or pointed in your face. One you have release the pressure you'll see what I mean. The first thing I noticed was the quiet. Old pressure cookers have the weight on the top that 'rocks' and releases some steam. I never saw any steam come out of the Instant Pot until I manually released the pressure. First food I cooked was sweet potatoes. The Pot came up to high pressure in less than five minutes. I forgot to slice the sweet potatoes or skin them, but it turned out fine as the skins slipped right off. Next, I made hard boiled eggs, or should I say pressured eggs? These are so marvelous from a pressure cooker. The yolks tend to be more centered and the shells slip off at the first crack on the counter. This is where I started not liking the instructions! The Quick Start instructions do not have a 'recipe' for hard boiled eggs! Or yogurt! I also did not find a website listed in the instructions where I could find more ways to use the Instant Cooker. To me, this was a major lost opportunity. Yep. You can make hard boiled eggs in about 15 minutes! Put a regular steamer basket in the cooker (the ones that 'fan out', like you would steam tamales in). I used the steamer thing that came with the cooker and it did not keep the eggs from moving and cracking. Place your eggs in the steamer basket straight out of the fridge. Set the pressure on high for four minutes, then let the pressure decrease naturally for five minutes. Remove the eggs with a large spoon to an ice bath and let them sit five minutes. So marvelous! Occasionally an egg does crack but it mostly stays in the shell (I guess it cracks later on). Just use any cracked eggs first. Now, the other great features of the Instant Cooker are the three pressure levels, five slow cooker temps, and large digital display. When you pressure cook, when it reaches the preset time of pressure, it turns off and starts the clock counting up so you know how much 'natural' pressure release time has passed. Having used stove top cookers, I can tell you that this is an unbelievable thing! So accurate! There is also a sear function which I am looking forward to when making chili. Currently, I sear my course grind meat in a stove top pan, then saute the onions and peppers on the stovetop, putting it all in a slow cooker. Now, I will be able to just use one pot! When you are done with the Cooker, be sure to use hot pads to remove the insert if it is still hot. The ceramic insert was very easy to clean. I recommend removing the gasket, washing and drying thoroughly, before storing it. Now, back to the printed materials. I feel that I am a pretty accomplished cook, having learned watching Julia Child in the 1960s and doing things the traditional way. Therefore, I already had a grasp of how pressure cookers work and how heat and pressure combine and impact not only the cooking time, but also the intensity of the flavors. A person who had not grown up cooking traditionally would likely benefit from a little science lesson in the book, as well as some recipes beyond pulled pork and such. Eggs! Such a marvel and no mention of hard boiled eggs!

One pot cooking
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Ninja instant cooker is really several appliances in one BIG pot. Out of the box the It looks large and is intimidating. Fortunately, the “Start” instructions are very good. After you follow the “first time pressure cooking?” tag using the pressure function is very easy. There are two pressure settings high (meats) and low (delicate foods). The touch digital display is easy to use and the functions pads are well identified. The stove top sear/sauté functions have a temperature range from 150°F to 400°F which should cover most needs. The slow cook function should eliminate the need for a separate slow cooker Steam function is very handy and will allow for healthy cooking. It weighs nearly 12 pounds and requires a lot of storage place. But, you can eliminate the need for a separate slow cooker, steamer pot and rice cooker. The Ninja Instant cooker is really very versatile and the ceramic pot is easy to clean. The 6-quart capacity is large enough for my family needs. The hard part is learning how to adapt your recipes to take advantage of all the features. The booklet indicates there is a glass lid available for the sear/sauté function, but the web site did not show one for this model. The included recipe book is rather sparse but as more instant type cooking appliances get in use I am sure there will be a plethora of recipes to try. I am eager to try different foods with my new Ninja instant cooker. So far it is very impressive and certainly very fast.

Easy to use, versatile, makes great-tasting meals
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This device is basically a pressure cooker on steroids. Pressure cookers have been around forever. They are useful for anyone, and they are particularly needed by anyone living at high elevations. What the Ninja Instant Cooker adds is an all-in-one flavor to the pressure cooker idea. In addition to pressure cooking, it can be used as a slow cooker to make stews and so forth, a steamer for cooking vegetables and anything else that can be cooked by steaming, and a simple cook pot for making sauces or anything else you might make in a Dutch oven. I have used it three times since acquiring it about a week ago, twice following recipes that were in the booklet that came with it and once to just steam some vegetables. The cooker is very easy to use, has plenty of control options, and cooks food quickly, which is one of the points of pressure cooking, and VERY well in terms of final appearance and taste. I made the white bean turkey chili and the risotto carbonara from the recipe book. Both turned out very well and give our family new options for regular meals. There is a tasty-sounding recipe for minestrone soup that we plan to try next, and we plan to make regular use of the cooker for routine preparation of vegetables, soups, meats, and sauces. Steaming broccoli worked very well and took only one minute plus heat-up time, which made it about six minutes total. Food cooks quickly and evenly throughout. Many different types of foods can be cooked this way. The controls offer a wide variety of cooking options. Overall, I would recommend this for anyone who wants to experience the world of pressure cooking or anyone who wants the ability to cook meals a bit faster than they usually do.

I wanted to love it!
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm a huge Ninja fan. It may have been a lemon, but we had all kinds of problems with this pot. It wouldn't pressurize and the controls thought it was. It took forever to cook. It only worked properly twice.

Goodbye crock pot!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We've had an assortment of crock pots over the years, and love the hearty stews & slow cooked ribs, especially on a cold winter night. What we didn't like was leaving a 1000 watt heating device plugged in all day & having to think about it when running out to the store, etc. The Ninja solved this problem beautifully. After a quick review of the directions, we first gave it a test of the pressure function. Added 3 cups water, secured the lid, hit the pressure button, set a 2 minute timer, and let it go. While in heating mode, the display shows a circling pattern, when it hits steam, the countdown function starts. Worked nicely, and shut down on target. We were at first leery about the pressure release on the lid, the way it loosely lays might give an impression that it's broken, but it performed as it should. If I had a suggestion, I would say to redesign it so it gives a positive click. First meal we tried was a beef stew with potatoes, carrots, celery, onion, in a tomato sauce base. Put a little oil in the pot and proceeded to sear the meat along with the onions. The Ninja heated up quickly and seared nicely. Added the rest of the ingredients and closed it up to begin pressure cooking. We went with the recommended 45 minute pressure time. I wasn't clocking it, but I estimate took about 10 minutes to come up to pressure. The result - a wonderfully savory stew in less than an hour. We had used baby Yukon Gold potatoes, and they were fork tender, as were the carrots. While I'm not going to say the old crock pot wouldn't have produced the same result, the Ninja put it out in 1/10 the time. The only thing missing was the anticipation from aromas wafting around the house all day, but I'll take the instant gratification instead! Great product, can't wait to try it for a variety of items.
