Blender meets Functionality
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Well we decided to try out a new blender that has the capability of doing some food processing. Our older blender is used for mainly making smoothies, but wanted the expanded options to save on appliances in the kitchen. This is my first Ninja product to own. This blender was packed with accessories, it took us a minute to really understand how it all came together. It comes with about 15 pieces, and not having much experience with these automated cutting machines, it was a bit intimidating at first, but once we starting throwing foods at it, it got pretty simplified. We decided to test it out by going through the included recipe book with instructions that are specific to the Ninja blender, then went to the store and stocked up on items we wanted to try out over the weekend. The first thing we tried was the slicer, decided to see how well it cut zucchini slices, while it did a good job, the slices were pretty thin and the hole to feed the food through is a bit narrow, so we had to cut the zucchini more so to fit, which affect the size and shape of our cuts, but it was great how quickly and smoothly it worked. Next we decided to chop up some Cauliflower with the chopping blade. This did a good job, but you have to be sure not to overdo it as it can chop pretty fine size pieces. We also tried the grating and shredding discs with some potatoes just to see how well it performed, we were hoping to do some hashbrowns for breakfast, but it ended up cutting tiny pieces, and again we had to cut down to small pieces to push it through the feeder. We ended up using the chopper for potatoes for the best results and made delicious potatoes O’Brien. We also tried a few options with onions, but the chopper again did the best job for our needs. I then did my traditional smoothie on this blender which worked really well. My older blender will usually miss a blueberry or piece of fruit, and sometimes had to be ran twice to get everything…the Ninja liquified everything perfectly on the first try. One issue we had was during the second day, the pitcher feed chute lid had a lot of trouble getting into the lock position. We couldn’t use it until we locked it for safety reasons, and it took us awhile to finally get it to work, but it required a lot of jiggling and adjusting. Still wouldn’t easily lock after, so not sure what the issue is, everything appeared to work smoothly until we put the lid on and then it wouldn’t lock. Still haven’t got it to work right, but at least we can get it with some extra effort. This is really the only trouble we have had with the overall product so far. The blender itself is nice and compliments any kitchen. The interface is looks advanced (still easy to use) and allows for automated intelligent options or a manual process. You can tell this product was designed around safety and will only work when items are properly secure. Blades are very sharp, so have to be careful handling and cleaning. Also, cleaning was real easy. There is no blades permanently mounted on the blender, so it makes washing it out simple. In general this is a great blender, I wouldn’t say it replaces a food processor, but does give you additional options which is always nice. It includes the recipe book for food, desserts, and smoothies which is a great way to start learning how to use the blender. I’ve definitely found new methods to improve my breakfast in the short amount of time of owning it.

Too Expensive
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Broke upon in first use. And due to Best Buy's cancerous practices, allowing only 14 days after date of purchase, I'm out $220 bucks. It was a Christmas gift. It was purchased exactly one month ago they day of writing this review. I also called the local Best Buy to speak to someone to figure it out. The number was a local number, but it redirected me to a call center in India.

All Around Great Blender and Food Processor
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Ninja Foodi is the swiss army knife of blenders. This is a blender, food processor, mixer, thick smoothie maker, and even has a nutrient extraction feature. To be honest, I've generally just used dedicated blenders and food processors so it's nice as while those are generally plug and play, I'll need to do some reading to use the different modes of the Foodi correctly. Proceeding to taking out the blender itself, the main blender cup is nice, large size, and plastic. Glass is a bit better where it comes to durability and ease of cleaning but the plastic looks good. I've not had any issues with plastic cups on Ninja blenders though I have had a couple break from other brands. The square-like top/cover of the main cup is normal Ninja fare. It has an interlock feature which will prevent the blender from operating if the top is not properly closed. That's a feature that I like, especially with the main cup where one sometimes will open things up to insert more food in the middle of blending. Note, I had to edit this down from a longer review I wrote to fit for Best Buy's system! I'll skip the unboxing description, you can check out what comes with the Foodi online. The blender base has the Ninja blender family look. This one looks a bit more professional or sophisticated than my last blender with a brushed aluminum like look. Controls are surprisingly simple for something that has so many features. There are three buttons (power, mode, and pulse) and a dial which also has a center button and two digit display. The dial lets you select a program (for example, smoothie, chop, or dough) in IQ mode or a speed (in percentage via the digits display) in manual mode. So in IQ mode, you'd turn the dial to select something, like smoothie, then press the start to have it automatically run through, adjusting the speed on its own and automatically stopping when done. In manual mode, you'd turn the dial to select a speed, then hit start to operate. Here, you'd need to manually hit stop when done. You can also adjust the speed while in operation as normal. Pulse is just that, press the button for an asynchronous pulse which stops when you release the button. Whatever cup you put on the base, you twist clockwise until you here a click to lock it into place. For testing this out, I pretty much did two normal things I tend to do repeatedly with blenders - make a stew, make a high protein smoothie , and one abnormal one - some chopping, shredding and grating for a salad. Blenders typically handle the first one well so the real test will be the smoothie and the salad. Blending the ingredients for the stew went well. For this I put the blender in manual mode, start at a 1 the dial it up. Having this fine grained control over the speed let me get things blended well without needing to open it up and move things around. I in fact used the cover that allows for adding additional items but ended not needing it. The cup was large enough to hold my half onion, 4 peppers, and habanero that were slightly cut and I didn't need to insert a spoon to help move things around to get blending started. Between the variable speed and higher torque, the Foodi handled this well and I didn't feel like I may be stressing the motor which is a normal concern (though to be fair, I've not noticed any performance loss) based on the sounds my previous blender makes. For my protein shake, I tried it first with the normal large blending cup using manual mode. Then the next day using the smoothie bowl. With the manual blending went well, nothing too special to report here. For the day where I used the smoothie cup, I decided to stress test it a bit. I deliberately cut down on the amount of milk I'd normally use so I could experiment with using the paddles in the smoothie maker. This also gave me an opportunity to try out the IQ mode's smoothie program. So, after loading up milk, some banana, peanut butter, and three scoops of protein powder into the smoothie maker cup, I then hit the button to switch it into IQ mode, rotated the dial to select smoothie, then hit start. The blender started - it seemed like it started a higher speed than I used when doing it manually, then it slowed down and kind of pulsed, speeding up and slowing down as it tried to churn through the ingredients in the cup. I started turning the paddles to help and found that made a difference, with the motor speed picking up. After it got to a point where it seemed to run near high speed for about 15 seconds, it then turned off. I realized that using the paddles seemed to help with another common shake issue - have some peanut butter or protein powder that's stuck on the side of the blending cup which doesn't get blended or mixed in. This is so normal, that I ignored it when blending with the large up. Testing the food processor function, first was to slice up cucumbers. These will fit through the feed hole as-is so the only prep that I did was to slice off the ends. I installed the disc blade spindle then the slicing disc with the slice facing up. What was interesting was that this sits relatively high up in the bowl, bit it makes sense since you'll essentially push veggies down through it and so you need the space below to hold the sliced product. I'm happy to say the slicing went well producing relatively thin slices. Not too thin for a salad, but kind borderline. I can imagine this is the perfect thickness if you're slicing up potatoes for chips. After emptying the cucumber into a bowl, I then flipped the disc over to the shredding function and grabbed a carrot. I initially I used the same larger opening with the pusher, it didn't really feed that well. Looking at the quick start guide, I see now why it hypes up the 2-part pusher. The middle of the pusher is removable providing for a smaller opening which fit the carrots better. And the removable part is itself a pusher. It now also makes sense why you wanted a flat cut on both ends of the veggie, it helps ensure that when you're pushing down things feed consistently against the blades. That said, my not super well prepared carrots did shred and well. It's not the same result you'd get using the handheld shredder that you swipe along the length of a carrot, it's more akin to what you'd tend to see at a restaurant (hmm, so now I can recognize when someone is likely using a food processor versus hand shredding) and maybe close to what you get with the rectangular device that has shredder, grater, etc on four faces. Anyway, I was pretty impressed. Note, for both of these, I used the blender in manual rather than any of the IQ programs. The final thing to try before switching to trying out chopping was the grate disc. I didn't really have a reason to grate some lemon peel, but I wanted to try it anyway. With what I'd learned, I used a lemon that was cut in half which I already squeezed then removed some seeds. For this, I won't completely push it through, instead just kinda press down in the center to see if I could grate enough to create a normal amount of "zest". This took some time to set up right as I wanted to make sure I could get the pressure right when pressing down. After running with grating, I'm not sure whether I'd use this with lemons/limes, maybe more with something like cheese. I've not usually grated my own cheese at home, but perhaps I'll try this out in the future. The result was a bit larger than I'd want with lemon/lime peel. I liken it to the rectangular metal shredder/grater combo where it has large and small holes/slicers so you can choose the size out that you want. Next was chopping. After removing the disc blade and adapter and rinsing the cup, I put in the main blade to first chop some apples I'd already coarse cut to fit in the cup, selected the chop program, and hit start. The Foodi pretty much just pulsed things, at least as far as I could tell. But I did get some nicely chopped apples. And I suspect if I hit it again, I'd get even more finely chopped apples. So, next I tried tomato. This is one of those that never seems to go well because the tomato tends to squish and juicify. While it wasn't as uniform as the apples, I actually did get chopped tomato without half or more of it becoming tomato juice! Nice. While I normally hand-wash everything with the blender, almost everything except the base (obviously) is dishwasher safe. So this time around I loaded them up with other dishes. To be honest, I think I prefer using the dishwasher, especially with the discs. Handling the spiral blade is ok for hand cleaning and I've got some years of experience from a previous Ninja that I've had. However, even then, I still cut myself once or twice a year. It's definitely nicer to be able to sue the dishwasher, especially when you have food bit that won't wash off with a strong blast of water. I didn't experiment with the nutrient cup during this week though I did look through the guide for the examples where it was used. It seems the main use is getting a single serving of whatever drink you're blending. I think given that you use the same blade as the smoothie cup, it means you can use it to get a finer blend for a drink and so if deciding between that and the main large cup, this may be less taxing on the blender if you're doing something like making a crushed ice mixed drink but aside from that, I'll probably tend to use either the large cup and it's associated blade or the smoothie cup for the drinks/smoothies that I tend to make at home. In review, I'm pretty pleased with the performance and features of the Foodi. The Foodi handily earns its five stars.
