So much to love, but also missed opportunities

There is much to like in Ninja’s XL 14-Cup Coffee Maker PRO, but also missed opportunities. One of my peeves with coffee makers is that I need to pull it from under the cabinet every time I use it to pour in water and coffee. Result is I need to leave a foot of cord hanging loose. Also, the bottom of past coffee makers I used have scratched my counter or otherwise left marks I need to clean or polish out. I can pick up the maker but worry that the carafe will fall out and break if I go a bit off level. Maybe it’s just that my coordination is not at it best until after I’ve had my first cup of coffee? The Ninja takes a partial step to solving this with a removable reservoir, but it’s on the back of the machine. It’s doable, I could make that work if there were no other obstacles but placing it on the side would work much better. Also, the coffee filter and grounds go in from the top, and the lid to access the filter basket hits the cabinet. A front swing out basket be one solution. The 14-cup glass carafe pours a silky-smooth stream into the first cup through to the last cup. Pour slow or pour fast, not one drip. Awesome job with that! Give the designer a bonus and forever use this design on all your carafes. So many coffee makers fail here. The carafe is not marked in any way with cups. Since the reservoir is removable, they marked the reservoir. Makes sense. The environmentally safe paint they to make those marks now tend to come off with washing anyway. Not like on the carafes from the 80’s. Why not make hash marks molded into the carafe glass or inside the plastic handle against the glass? The tall reservoir does not fit in the filtered water dispenser in my fridge except at an angle, so those marks on the reservoir are another miss for me. And no way to get it filled to 14-cups with it tilted. Also filling to 14-cups would require a careful walk and careful placement back on the Ninja’s base to avoid spilling water out on the floor or power cord. Or putting the reservoir down to put the lid on first. So, I fill the carafe with more water than I need, pour water into the reservoir left in place and dump any extra water in the sink as with a typical coffee maker. The Ninja uses all the water in the reservoir for each brew cycle, not just for the number of cups you want, if it had a choice to pick that. I brew about a half pot each day for myself. All that potential extra capacity to make a second half pot at the ready is wasted. And since I have pull out the coffee maker from under the cabinet to add coffee anyway, the removable reservoir does not do anything for me. it’s a total miss. Next home or kitchen remodel will have a coffee station with no top cabinet, or one set much higher. The coffee scoop is built into the lid of the reservoirs lid. That makes it convenient and hard to lose. No more looking through a drawer of utensils if it gets shoved back by someone putting utensils away. And one level scoop is 2 cups, so half the scooping is needed. Genius! However, it’s tricky to get a grip on it and get it out. There should be a finger hole in the handle and lid, or indents on the sides of the scoop to add a finger grip for easier removal. The Small (2-4 cups) and Large (5-14 cups) brewing options worked well when I wanted a make a small afternoon cup. A perfect brew. I used this on a full pot to see how much bolder the coffee would be. I found only a small difference. The Ninja may possibly extract nearly all the flavor there is from the beans I use on its normal brew cycle when brewing a full pot. The Ninja brews fast, but it’s a bit noisy at the end boiling off that last bit of water left in the heating chamber, as are most of the ‘brew all the water in the reservoir’ coffee makers. The warming plate can be set to keep coffee warm for 2, 3, or 4 hours. It also has three temperature settings to choose from. You can choose to drink coffee fast and hot before it overcooks, or back the temperature off for longer warming period. A great idea, I like the attention here. You can press the Freshness Timer button and see just how long the coffee has been keeping warm since it brewed. This can help you fine tune the warming plate temperature and time. Or let you know how fast you need to drink your coffee to get your next acceptable cup. There is a Clean Cycle to help keep the Ninja working well. Unfortunately, there is no indicator to let you know when you should clean it. That would probably be unreliable unless there was some memory backup of the number of brew cycles and time, or some measurement of the water flow. An engineer could have fun with this problem. The coffee basket has an extended edge on one side. This makes it easier to get out, especially when hot. I always remove the basket after brewing so water stuck in the grinds do not keep dripping into the pot after the brewing is done. Those drips can be bitter. The handle is a welcome touch. A permanent gold plastic mesh filter is included. Or you can use paper filters if you prefer. I prefer the permanent filter. I get more flavor; I think the paper blocks something. I do see a little fine coffee sediment in the bottom of the carafe, maybe that the extra flavor. Add a bit of extra water and pour that last cup a bit slower if the thought of it bothers you, but I never notice any grittiness or unwelcome taste from it. The instruction book is clear and concise. It explains the functions well and includes troubleshooting steps should a problem arise. I had no problem finding and figuring out the features with a bit of poking around. The control panel labels, and layout are very intuitive. However, the fine text on the silver buttons is hard to read with overhead kitchen lights. The print on the buttons needs to be bolder to hold up the overhead light glare. The Ninja coffee maker has the versatility of large 14 cup capacity when needed, and controls to brew just a few cups when you need just a little. Being able to tweak the warming plate temperature and time allows you keep decent tasting coffee longer. The coffee temperature is correct, and the coffee taste is particularly good, better than many others I’ve had. The removable water reservoir seemed like an innovative idea, but in practice did not add any real value. I believe making the tweaks to the design I noted would appeal to everyone with an overhead cabinet over their coffee maker. Go BIG on design Ninja! Otherwise, the removable reservoir doesn’t add much if any real value for most of us, it’s just a gimmick. Make the reservoir fixed and cut the price with the savings. Overall, I like the Ninja a great deal compared to others I’ve had. I see allot of missed opportunity and potential to take the next step toward the remarkably ergonomic coffee maker of my dreams. The one I would buy a spare of before the design changed.

I do not recall what I paid for this coffee-maker, but it must have been pretty reasonable...or a skinflint such as myself would not have bought it. The coffee it brews is fine - certainly on par with Braun, Cuisinart & other coffeemakers I have owned. The carafe & filter cone feel comparatively heavy duty. The removable water reservoir makes filling the coffee-maker less messy. I especially appreciate the ability to warm the brewed coffee for up to 4 hrs, and restart warming if that is insufficient. Overall, I am quite pleased with this purchase.

With my husband being from Colombia you want to know that any form of coffee that we make for ourselves or guests must be perfect. In fact, we actually used two different pots one small for everyday and a full size for when guests arrive. Now we don't need to dig that bigger one out as this does a great job on small and large batches. YAY! Another thing that I have always struggled with is freshness. In the past I hesitated to use the auto function as once coffee is ground it starts getting stale. This unit is very well sealed and although not air tight I sleep well knowing all the coffee molecules will be ready for brewing at the appointed time while we are still happily in bed. This goes so far as the carafe lid having a tube that guides the precious liquid down to the bottom of the vestal and a lid that fits very tightly. Speaking of the lid it requires a slight turn or twist to remove which, along with a well engineered spout, helps eliminate drips. 14 cups is a large amount of coffee and as I mentioned earlier, we typically make smaller batches. There is a 1-4 setting that really makes a difference in those smaller batches. The removable reservoir is a feature that here to fore has only been available on much more expensive expresso machines and is very welcome here. With notches to make right or left hand retrieval easy this again improves on ease of use and the ability to clean. Speaking of cleaning it has a self cleaning mode which I have not used but is going to be handy because every Ninja device I have lasts a long time and our water is quite hard. All in all this is a simple to use elegantly designed device that will help many of us get our day going easily and tastefully. YUM!

Coffee makers like this one all have a common ancestor to which every one is ultimately compared. These updates to the original Mr. Coffee have water reservoirs, water percolating heating elements, filter baskets, and a carafe. Ninja has produced an attractive update to the generic masses seeking to clone the original. There are no surprises to the functional design, but Ninja has upgraded the experience of their user in a few ways. (1) The reservoir is removable to load with water. I have been accustomed to filling a reservoir after first filling my carafe to a specific level - now you simply fill the clear reservoir to your desired level. (2) The conical filter basket is removable for easy cleaning. A reusable mesh filter is included (and works beautifully here). & (3) The carafe isn't burdened by a flip-up lid (you don't need that since you're now filling the reservoir directly!) - the lid removes completely with a slight twist and that simple feature revolutionizes cleaning. I can't believe that a simple lid re-design can change my day-to-day experience so much. The multi-button face of the unit is intuitive and very easy to navigate. A "Rich" (bold) brew feature is available at the touch of a button. And I welcome the button that initiates a lengthy de-scaling cleaning mode. You know basically what you're getting with any coffee maker like this one. But this specific model has a few design features that feel well-considered. Sometimes a few simple modifications that are smart can upgrade your user experience surprisingly well. Bravo.

My family is needing a new coffee brewing station. The design on this is simplified, not much to assemble or take apart for cleaning. There are markers for amount of water for 1 to 4 cups on the reservoir and a reminder that the basket handle is folded down and the top is securely closed. Positives: it brews pretty fast; 6 cups are brewed quickly. The scoop in the top helps for how much grounds to use, one scoop for two cups of water. The water reservoir removes to fill which is easy and can be cleaned in the dishwasher. The classic setting was a bit watery for the coffee drinkers at my house, the rich setting was preferred. There is a button for 1-4 cups, to go along with a lower level of water in the reservoir, which brews even faster. A lot of the parts are dishwasher safe. The permanent filter can be swapped out for paper filters if you prefer. Both the delay feature and the timer feature worked as advertised to start coffee after an offset of time or at the setting of a certain time of the morning. The clean function worked well, also should clean the parts by hand or in dishwasher about once a week. The warm function comes on after coffee is in the pot, auto turns off after a bit. You can manually turn it back on. I would recommend this coffee maker for home use, should provide years of coffee for up to 6 or 7 people.

Ninja is a trusted brand when it comes to kitchen gadgets and appliances. Their products are made with quality and care. I have owned quite a few Ninja brand products are they hold up very well and served their purpose. This coffee maker is right up there with good quality. Let's start with the appearance. It's sleek and compact. It has a very modern look. The water reservoir can hold up to 14 cups of water. It has a reusable coffee filter that is easy to clean. There are a few different options when it comes to brewing coffee. It can be set to "classic" or "rich." Both options work well. I prefer the "rich" option because I like my coffee a little more bold. This coffee maker is also programmable so you can set it up to your morning routine. The coffee pot is the only part of the coffee maker I'm not a fan of. If you slide the base of the lid over, you can remove it. While I understand that this mechanism is supposed to make cleaning easier, I found it less reliable in keeping the lid on. Other than that, I really like this coffee maker.

I love the look of this coffee maker! It blends in well with my stainless steel kitchen appliances. It does not take up alot of space on your countertop. The box included the coffee maker, a 14 cup glass carafe, and a permanent filter. I really like that the water reservoir is removable for this system. If you are making a 14 cup pot of coffee, just fill the reservoir to the fill line. If you are making 1-4 cups of coffee, fill the reservoir only with the amount needed. The coffee maker will brew the amount of water that is in the reservoir. The coffee maker has the permanent filter included, but I chose to use #4 paper filters for a cleaner brew. I like the pause feature, I can grab a cup while it's still brewing, then unpause to continue the brew. This coffee maker is programmable, up to 24 hours, for a delayed brew. This is great for your morning cup of coffee! The feature that I like most is that the carafe has a wide mouth which makes it so easy to clean! Highly recommend!

Ninja - Programmable XL 14-Cup Coffee Maker PRO, Glass Carafe, Freshness Timer, with Permanent Filter - Black/Stainless Steel The Ninja 14 cup coffee maker has some very nice features. As well as 14 cups, it has a 4-cup setting. The 4-cup setting doesn’t just make a smaller pot, it adjusts the water speed and temp to allow for a better small pot of coffee. It has a standard 2-hour timer with an option to adjust that time up to 4 hours or down to 0. I love that you can remove the warming time because we use only use cold coffee, so once it is done, we let it cool to put in the refrigerator. Not having to remember to go turn off the warming plate is very handy. If you do use the warming plate, it is adjustable with 3 temperatures to choose from. It is only slightly confusing on what button to press and when, but with the instructions and a minute in front of the coffee maker you will be able to get the setting you want. The decanter has a mixing tube built in so the brewed coffee is fully mixed as it enters the decanter. This feature is missing on just about all other coffee makers. The water reservoir is just a little cheap, or at least it feels that way. It’s thin and hard to hold because the grip in the middle is from the finger slots to the outside edge. It’s also hard to clean without a cleaning brush. It was impossible for me to get my hand in it more than halfway. There are water level markers on the reservoir but there are not any on the decanter. It does a very good job of covering the coffee grounds in heated water with the large water drip head. The top of the reservoir has a built-in scoop, not so easy to remove, but also stays in place while adding water. It has 2 brew cycles, “Classic” and “Rich”. On classic it takes about 12 minutes to brew a full 14 cups with a final water temperature of 184°. On Rich it takes about 16 minutes for a full 14 cups and a final temperature of 189°. Like the stated names, classic brews a lighter tasting pot while rich is just a bit bolder. Cleaning of scale in the system is as easy as can be with a simple “Clean” button. It has the normal delay start that you would expect as well as a timer button that allows you to see the clock, or how long the coffee has been setting after the brewing cycle has finished. The top of the decanter is a twist lock type, no flip top lid. The complete unit is the same height and width of my old machine but is smaller in depth. This makes it a better fit on our small countertop space. The permanent filter screen is about the same as all others. I find that I still need to use a paper insert in order to not get grounds in my coffee. This is caused by the type of coffee I like, the grind is very fine. Overall this is a very good coffee maker, and with the added features it brings should be right at home in any kitchen.

    It Makes Really Good Coffee

There are so many coffee makers that have all kinds of bells and whistles and can be purchased for all price ranges. I have bought some very expensive coffee makers thinking they would be better than the cheaper priced makers. After using this coffee maker for a week I feel like this one is the perfect mix of options and great brewing capability, and at a good price point. The number one thing I look for in coffee is that it is hot. If you've ever used the single brew pod makers you know what I'm talking about. They are never hot enough for me. Also, I've tried the stay fresh stainless steel carafes but found that they seem to cool the coffee down when it enters the carafe. I think this machine makes hot coffee because not only does it heat the water well, but it doesn't lose much temperature because of the warming plate. The second most important thing I look for in a coffee maker is the coffee flavor. Some machines just do not extract much flavor. This machine does. It has a shower-type water dispenser over the coffee beans so that all the grounds are used rather than the water just passing through the same beans. It also has a setting for rich coffee. I thought I liked my coffee pretty strong but using the recommended scoops (1 scoop for 2 cups) and the rich brew made the coffee much stronger than your local coffee shop, and way too strong for me. My sweet spot is to use about 1/2 to 2/3 of the recommended scoops and the regular brew. The coffee is still very flavorful and rich. There are a few other cool designs on this maker. The detachable water reservoir is really handy. Also, the locking lid on the pot keeps it from lifting up when you pour the coffee into your cup. And the rounded shape where it pours out of keeps it from dribbling down the pot when you pour. Other perks: programmable timer, auto shut off, clock for how long it was made, beeping when brew finishes; reusable metal filter. Overall, I am impressed with this coffee maker and would recommend it.

I have a Ninja coffee brewer already for the house, but I wanted one for my office and thought this Ninja - Programmable XL 14-Cup Coffee Maker PRO would be perfect for that and I wasn’t wrong. This review will be pretty simple and concise, because this unit literally just makes coffee and nothing else. I think you’ll notice right off the bat that the glass carafe holds 14 cups and that’s about 2 more cups than most regular carafes out there. This may not seem like a big deal, but when you drink lots of coffee, trust me, it is. The coffee maker I have at home is a 10 cup system and that’s just not enough sometimes, but I drink most of my coffee at work anyway. After situating this in my office and adjusting the settings, I realized a few cool things. The warmer has 3 settings so that you don’t scorch your coffee and the system has a pause function, for when you really need that first cup of coffee. Oh, it comes with a permanent coffee filter if you like to be eco-friendly, but I prefer using regular paper cone filters as I can just toss them out at the office. You want a removable reservoir for your water? You got it! This is awesome as you can bring the tank to the water and not vice versa. To me, this is super convenient and essential for a modern coffee maker. There are a couple of different coffee settings, but you’re probably going to stick to brewing a full pot on the “Classic” mode, but maybe you’ll be wild and brew only 4 cups on “Rich” mode and drink that dark deliciousness right up. However you like to roll with your coffee, this coffee maker has your back. Remember, you’re not going to be making frothy lattes with this unit or frappes, but what you will make is delicious coffee time after time.

So, after trying two different pod-based coffee systems and found the perk and flavor to be lacking, I longed to return to a simple coffee maker where I can control the level of grounds and water used. I can say this maker is up to the task. It can make as low as two full cups or a full carafe. I truly feel this design is the best of both worlds. The separable, detachable water reservoir makes clean up much easier and clear fill lines give me just the exact amount of beverage I want every time. While it's a few more steps than pod system I hardly lament the few extra steps or time taken to truly get a richer tasting cup of coffee. It's a quick three step process. Simply fill with desired amount of water, likewise with the grounds, and push the brew button and you're set. If you haven't the time for even that small amount of time the delay timer is easy to set. I love that I can turn on and off the heating base. The lid slides to lock firmly in place, preventing any spills or splashes. I struggle to find any downside to this maker. Clean-up is easy, the reusable filter is great, and the measuring scoop is great at getting deep into the bag, scrapping every last bit of grounds. This maker doesn't try and bombard you with lots of options and buttons that you'll probably never use. The options and attachments are great and all you need to get great tasting coffee. This is now my machine when I need rich bold coffee, fully replacing both popular pod systems.
