Customers are saying
Customers have good things to say about the Smart DoubleStack XL Air Fryer's ease of use, large capacity, and space-saving design. Many appreciate its cooking performance and the included thermometer's accuracy in achieving desired doneness. While some find the controls could be more intuitive and the noise level a bit high during operation, the positive feedback on its size and cooking capabilities outweighs these concerns. The Smart Finish feature, allowing for simultaneous cooking of different items, is also a highlight for many users.

Small Compromise for a Better Design
|Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overall a good air fryer, the baskets definitely need to be shaken more often for even crisping. Traditionally designed air fryers can crisp throughout a bit more evenly, but definitely worth the compromise for the space saving design.

Space saving is great, but there's a drawback.
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Concept is perfect but performance is not the best. Time has to double if you're using both baskets at the same time.

Programming challenges
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Work well. Lack of presets is problematic. Settings are complicated and more akin to programming than cooking. The probe does well once you figure out how to program it.

Double-Decker Air Fryer
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Over the past 2 years, we've really gotten into using an air fryer to help prepare meals. Since we've had one, we've made everything from wings, to fries, to nuggets, and anything else that you'd normally think you'd need a traditional fryer to make. My wife has been wanting one that had 2 distinct bins, so we could make different things at the same time. If I want my 4-alarm buffalo chicken wings, and the kids want some taquitos, no worries now. We had one that was side-by-side, but it was massive and took up a lot of space in the cabinet and on the countertop, so my wife wanted to try this one out and so far, she's been really happy with it. She likes the fact that it's vertical. She said it feels like it takes up less space on the counter top and in the cabinet. It's actually a little smaller than the older, side-by-side model one we had. The over all look and feel is clean and simple. The control panel is not super intuitive, but after a couple of times using it, she's comfortable. She did note that the guide that came with it makes mention that if you're using both bins at the same time, that you'll need to add some extra time when cooking, which makes sense. She likes the fact that it cooks and cleans up well and easy. After use, the cooling down does make some noise, but there's not a lot of heat that comes off, which means it can safely be stored in the cabinet.

Great Product, unless you lose the thermometer
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was very happy with my Ninja Double Stack Air Fryer SL451. Highly functional and works exactly as designed. But the smart thermometer feature that was the main reason I bought it. Unfortunately, I lost the thermometer. And this is a problem with no solution. Ninja does not sell a replacement thermometer for this model. And no other replacement thermometers that the do sell work on this product, according to customer service. That means if you lose it (or it stops working), the feature becomes useless, and you’re stuck with a pricey air fryer that no longer does what it promised. Given other Ninja products offer replacement thermometers, it’s suprising that this one doesn’t. Buyers should know in advance. The product works great otherwise, but without the thermometer, it loses one of its core selling points. At this price, that shouldn’t happen.

Another Ninja win with some small caveats
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Well, you can't go wrong with a Ninja product and this is no different. I already have the single drawer one and wanted something to cook all my stuff at once. Well, this does do that and more. Here are my good points and bad points on this item. Good: 1. about same size as single drawer, so the foot print does not take up much counter space 2. has 2 drawers and 2 racks in the kit. So I can cook 4 items at 2 different temps at the same time. Each drawer has it only set of settings to use as well. 3. cooks a lot more evenly then my older one, and does not require pre-heating 4. each basket is big enough for at least 2 servers of food with room to spare 5. heating exhaust is not very much, so I am able to keep it closer to the wall that my other one and still feel like I am not going to melt anything while cooking 6. lower tray can use a included thermometer that can tell you outside temp and internal temp (dual zone spots on prong) 7. the trays are so easy to clean and they seemed to be coated in Teflon and are very light. you can put them in the dishwasher with no worries. 8. after cooking the handles are not even warm, so no concern about burning hands. 9. trays are light, so even with food inside, they are really easy to handle. Bad: 1. unlike my older one, it does not remember your last setting. So each morning I have select my mode all over again. 2. controls are confusing at first. it seems like the order of the buttons should be in steps, not randomly on the face. I would like to go from top to bottom in a certain order, but you have to jump around to get it set 3. power button, start/stop button are easy to see. but even in my well lit kitchen, all the rest of the keys are shiny silver on black background making it hard to see. They should have back lit them like the others I have. 4. Not 100% why, but when I cook something with a recommended time, it seems a little over cooked. so it is very efficient, but you will need to play with the times a little The bad parts are mostly personal items and do not reflect your use case. The whole system operates perfectly. Just some small tweaks to make it truly epic.

Not so compact but great for full meal creation
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Ninja Double Stack XL Air Fryer is essentially two vertically stacked air fryers in one. It aims to allow you to prepare full meals while minimizing the counter top space used. It can air fry, air broil, bake, and roast. In addition to the double stack, you get two grills that you slot in each of the air fryer compartments effectively doubling again the number of different things that you’re able to cook. As you can only set one cooking mode for each stack, this only works if both items are being cooked in the same manner and that their physical size is small enough that the food itself can be stacked. Physically, for a device that’s designed to be space saving, it seems that it still consumes some unnecessary space. For example the handles for the air fryer doors are pretty big, much larger than needed to handle the weight of the door or effectively open and close them. Most of the device bulk is sized to the air fryer compartments, so barely wider but the control panel/display sticks off to the side. So while the physical footprint that it sits in is essentially the width of one of the stacks, the Double Stack XL will consume or block additioinal space with the display. It feels like this could have been better handled or integrated. This is perhaps a case where having a minimal set of buttons and having an app to control a kitcheb applilance actually makes sense. Usage is pretty straightforward. You select the zone you’re using, one or two, then cooking mode, and make any additional customizations. The top stack is zone one, bottom stack zone two. A feature this is is a smart thermometer. Essentially, it’s a wired thermometer that you plug into the air fryer (can only be used on the lower zone) and into food where you just want to cook to a specific internal temperature. One isn’t necessarily directly controlling the final temperature, while you do configure a cook temp, you’d actually configure a doneness (rare, medium, medium well, and well) for a give protein (which you’d select first). This enables a pretty complex set of cooking direction and I’m sure with better understanding of how the different settings interact, I could make better use of it. For now, I’m sticking to following Ninja’s recipe guides to better figure it out - that said, it does work. Right now, I don’t really do too much air frying so just needing to cook two things at once satisfies my requirements. But for the purposes of this review, I did experiment with using the grill to air fry some veggies and chicken wings in the same stack. The first thing of note, and perhaps this is really obvious, is that the grill can only really be used with foods big enough to to fall through the gaps. So, were I air frying carrot strips or string beans, the grill would work for that, otherwise, you’ll want the smaller things to sit on the crisper. The second is that while I’m sure having two different foods cooking in one stack has an impact, I noticed that chicken fried on the grill came out less. . . grilled, than when I’d just fried it by itself sitting on the crisper. The instructions say to always use the crisper plates because they help distribute air around the food. Apparently, they do a bit more than that despite the heat and air flow coming from the back of the device. While the air fryer is relatively easy to use, even with the two zones (in part because it defaults to zone 1) so you can always quickly set up frying in just a single stack the same as you would a an air fryer with just one basket, there are a few annoyances. The first is the obnoxious beep from the air fryer. It’s surprisingly loud in a way I didn’t quite get used to over a week and I’ve not found a way to reduce the volume or even turn it off. Forget steathily getting some food going while your baby sleeps nearby in the living room. Second, if that wasn’t enough, when in operation, the air fryer is particularly loud running the fan. To be fair, that seems to be a common issue for this type of appliance. The third has to do with evenness. There seems to be a gradient front to back. Reading through some of the recipe guides, a few suggest doing something like flipping chicken or shaking up fries. At first, I interpreted the flipping to mean turning over but this could also be a suggestion to adjust the horizontal positioning to more evenly cook. I guess even the crisper can’t completely solve the fact that air flow is moving from the back to the front - though maybe over a longer period of time things even out - I’m guessing this is perhaps not really an issue when baking. In all, I think the double stack XL is still pretty useful and while there’s some compromises on calling it truly compact, if your use case is that you regularly want to air fry a bunch of stuff at once, then whether or not its saving you counter space, this is really effifient versus your alternative. You don’t seem to give up any ability to get up to temperature with having the double stack and heat doesn’t seem to transfer much from the lower to the upper one, so there’s no real impact cooking a couple things vertically versus two air fryers sitting side by side. I think there’s some usability issues which make my rating a firm 4, but likely nothing one can’t eventually get used to dealing with or working around - unless the volume/noise is just a deal breaker.
