Programming challenges

Double-Decker Air Fryer
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Over the past 2 years, we've really gotten into using an air fryer to help prepare meals. Since we've had one, we've made everything from wings, to fries, to nuggets, and anything else that you'd normally think you'd need a traditional fryer to make. My wife has been wanting one that had 2 distinct bins, so we could make different things at the same time. If I want my 4-alarm buffalo chicken wings, and the kids want some taquitos, no worries now. We had one that was side-by-side, but it was massive and took up a lot of space in the cabinet and on the countertop, so my wife wanted to try this one out and so far, she's been really happy with it. She likes the fact that it's vertical. She said it feels like it takes up less space on the counter top and in the cabinet. It's actually a little smaller than the older, side-by-side model one we had. The over all look and feel is clean and simple. The control panel is not super intuitive, but after a couple of times using it, she's comfortable. She did note that the guide that came with it makes mention that if you're using both bins at the same time, that you'll need to add some extra time when cooking, which makes sense. She likes the fact that it cooks and cleans up well and easy. After use, the cooling down does make some noise, but there's not a lot of heat that comes off, which means it can safely be stored in the cabinet.

Another Ninja win with some small caveats
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Well, you can't go wrong with a Ninja product and this is no different. I already have the single drawer one and wanted something to cook all my stuff at once. Well, this does do that and more. Here are my good points and bad points on this item. Good: 1. about same size as single drawer, so the foot print does not take up much counter space 2. has 2 drawers and 2 racks in the kit. So I can cook 4 items at 2 different temps at the same time. Each drawer has it only set of settings to use as well. 3. cooks a lot more evenly then my older one, and does not require pre-heating 4. each basket is big enough for at least 2 servers of food with room to spare 5. heating exhaust is not very much, so I am able to keep it closer to the wall that my other one and still feel like I am not going to melt anything while cooking 6. lower tray can use a included thermometer that can tell you outside temp and internal temp (dual zone spots on prong) 7. the trays are so easy to clean and they seemed to be coated in Teflon and are very light. you can put them in the dishwasher with no worries. 8. after cooking the handles are not even warm, so no concern about burning hands. 9. trays are light, so even with food inside, they are really easy to handle. Bad: 1. unlike my older one, it does not remember your last setting. So each morning I have select my mode all over again. 2. controls are confusing at first. it seems like the order of the buttons should be in steps, not randomly on the face. I would like to go from top to bottom in a certain order, but you have to jump around to get it set 3. power button, start/stop button are easy to see. but even in my well lit kitchen, all the rest of the keys are shiny silver on black background making it hard to see. They should have back lit them like the others I have. 4. Not 100% why, but when I cook something with a recommended time, it seems a little over cooked. so it is very efficient, but you will need to play with the times a little The bad parts are mostly personal items and do not reflect your use case. The whole system operates perfectly. Just some small tweaks to make it truly epic.

Great Product, unless you lose the thermometer
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was very happy with my Ninja Double Stack Air Fryer SL451. Highly functional and works exactly as designed. But the smart thermometer feature that was the main reason I bought it. Unfortunately, I lost the thermometer. And this is a problem with no solution. Ninja does not sell a replacement thermometer for this model. And no other replacement thermometers that the do sell work on this product, according to customer service. That means if you lose it (or it stops working), the feature becomes useless, and you’re stuck with a pricey air fryer that no longer does what it promised. Given other Ninja products offer replacement thermometers, it’s suprising that this one doesn’t. Buyers should know in advance. The product works great otherwise, but without the thermometer, it loses one of its core selling points. At this price, that shouldn’t happen.

Not so compact but great for full meal creation
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Ninja Double Stack XL Air Fryer is essentially two vertically stacked air fryers in one. It aims to allow you to prepare full meals while minimizing the counter top space used. It can air fry, air broil, bake, and roast. In addition to the double stack, you get two grills that you slot in each of the air fryer compartments effectively doubling again the number of different things that you’re able to cook. As you can only set one cooking mode for each stack, this only works if both items are being cooked in the same manner and that their physical size is small enough that the food itself can be stacked. Physically, for a device that’s designed to be space saving, it seems that it still consumes some unnecessary space. For example the handles for the air fryer doors are pretty big, much larger than needed to handle the weight of the door or effectively open and close them. Most of the device bulk is sized to the air fryer compartments, so barely wider but the control panel/display sticks off to the side. So while the physical footprint that it sits in is essentially the width of one of the stacks, the Double Stack XL will consume or block additioinal space with the display. It feels like this could have been better handled or integrated. This is perhaps a case where having a minimal set of buttons and having an app to control a kitcheb applilance actually makes sense. Usage is pretty straightforward. You select the zone you’re using, one or two, then cooking mode, and make any additional customizations. The top stack is zone one, bottom stack zone two. A feature this is is a smart thermometer. Essentially, it’s a wired thermometer that you plug into the air fryer (can only be used on the lower zone) and into food where you just want to cook to a specific internal temperature. One isn’t necessarily directly controlling the final temperature, while you do configure a cook temp, you’d actually configure a doneness (rare, medium, medium well, and well) for a give protein (which you’d select first). This enables a pretty complex set of cooking direction and I’m sure with better understanding of how the different settings interact, I could make better use of it. For now, I’m sticking to following Ninja’s recipe guides to better figure it out - that said, it does work. Right now, I don’t really do too much air frying so just needing to cook two things at once satisfies my requirements. But for the purposes of this review, I did experiment with using the grill to air fry some veggies and chicken wings in the same stack. The first thing of note, and perhaps this is really obvious, is that the grill can only really be used with foods big enough to to fall through the gaps. So, were I air frying carrot strips or string beans, the grill would work for that, otherwise, you’ll want the smaller things to sit on the crisper. The second is that while I’m sure having two different foods cooking in one stack has an impact, I noticed that chicken fried on the grill came out less. . . grilled, than when I’d just fried it by itself sitting on the crisper. The instructions say to always use the crisper plates because they help distribute air around the food. Apparently, they do a bit more than that despite the heat and air flow coming from the back of the device. While the air fryer is relatively easy to use, even with the two zones (in part because it defaults to zone 1) so you can always quickly set up frying in just a single stack the same as you would a an air fryer with just one basket, there are a few annoyances. The first is the obnoxious beep from the air fryer. It’s surprisingly loud in a way I didn’t quite get used to over a week and I’ve not found a way to reduce the volume or even turn it off. Forget steathily getting some food going while your baby sleeps nearby in the living room. Second, if that wasn’t enough, when in operation, the air fryer is particularly loud running the fan. To be fair, that seems to be a common issue for this type of appliance. The third has to do with evenness. There seems to be a gradient front to back. Reading through some of the recipe guides, a few suggest doing something like flipping chicken or shaking up fries. At first, I interpreted the flipping to mean turning over but this could also be a suggestion to adjust the horizontal positioning to more evenly cook. I guess even the crisper can’t completely solve the fact that air flow is moving from the back to the front - though maybe over a longer period of time things even out - I’m guessing this is perhaps not really an issue when baking. In all, I think the double stack XL is still pretty useful and while there’s some compromises on calling it truly compact, if your use case is that you regularly want to air fry a bunch of stuff at once, then whether or not its saving you counter space, this is really effifient versus your alternative. You don’t seem to give up any ability to get up to temperature with having the double stack and heat doesn’t seem to transfer much from the lower to the upper one, so there’s no real impact cooking a couple things vertically versus two air fryers sitting side by side. I think there’s some usability issues which make my rating a firm 4, but likely nothing one can’t eventually get used to dealing with or working around - unless the volume/noise is just a deal breaker.

Excellent Upgrade to Any Other Air Fryer
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This fryer saves so much time because I can make everything in one shot. I use my air fryer to make a lot of different things year round, but the biggest problem I always had was the size of it. Everything had to be cooked in batches if I was cooking for more people than just myself. Even when I was making some fries to go along with the burgers I was grilling, I would have to make multiple batches. This fryer solves that problem. My fries came out crispy and nice. I was able to make the whole bag at once which is a time saver. I also noticed there was different cooking options besides Air Fry such as Roast, Bake, Reheat and Dehydrate. The other method I used was Reheat to reheat some fried chicken and it came out great. I will figure out other dishes I can make to utilize the other cooking options. I guess I will look at the book that comes with it and try some of those recipes. I also made a 16 ounce steak, which is something I was did with my previous air fryer. I cooked a NY Strip in this and it did not disappoint. I also want to mention that this fryer is a lot quieter than my previous one. This is a big plus for when I make late night snacks. In addition, I also made pork chops, salmon and baby potatoes in this and they all came out excellent. Cleanup is a breeze since everything is dishwasher safe. Considering the amount of things you can cook at the same time using the stackable rack, this appliance did not take up too much space on my counter top. I give this air fryer five stars and would recommend to everyone.

Very Good Air Fryer
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Ninja Double Stack XL air fryer is a great air fryer which elegantly solves one of the biggest problems I've had with all of my previous fryers. Air frying has become a regular cooking method in my household, used easily two to three times per week. One of our biggest problems with all air fryers we've had up until now is that they were all just a bit too small. Other double air fryers have been tempting, but always take up so much counter space. Ninja has solved that problem by stacking the two fryer baskets, essentially taking up no more counter space than our single air fryer. At first, the height of the DoubleStack XL was a bit intimidating, and we weren't sure it would fit under the cabinets, but it fit perfectly. If your cabinets are lower than the standard height most cabinets are, you might have some trouble, so definitely measure your space before purchasing. Now that we've had it there for a little bit, we have gotten used to it and it really doesn't take up any more space than our old air fryer. Functionally, it works beautifully. At first, it was a little confusing using the two different baskets and setting the temps and times. The controls could be a little more intuitive. But after about a week of using it we are getting the hang of it. We definitely paused the wrong zone a couple of times when taking the baskets out to do a mid cook shake up. Which brings me to one of my only real issues with the unit. It does not automatically pause or anything when you take a basket out. In other words, when I took a basket out and paused the wrong one on accident, I could feel the hot air blowing out. It was very strange and caught me off guard, because all of the air fryers I've had up until now all stop heat and air when you remove the basket. Moving on to actual performance, I got exactly what I was expecting with the Ninja brand. I have owned a couple of different Ninja Air Fryers and a few other Ninja products as well, and I have come to expect high quality from this brand, and the DoubleStack XL did not disappoint. Lastly, the DoubleStack XL does also include a smart thermometer function which can be used to automatically control cooking time and temperature. I used this feature to test it out, and it did work as advertised. However, I have owned a few different products with similar functions in the past, and I find that I just really don't use it very often, if at all. I imagine if you are like me and are used to cooking without a thermometer, then you probably won't use it either. However, if you already use something similar, or track the temperature of your meat regularly, then this will definitely add some value. In conclusion, the Ninja DoubleStack XL is a wonderful air fryer which solves one of my biggest problems with other air fryers by adding a second basket, effectively doubling my cooking capacity. It does so without taking up any more counterspace. While the controls take a bit to get used to, they aren't overly confusing. And most importantly, cooking performance is outstanding. I would easily recommend to anyone who is looking for a good high-capacity air fryer that doesn't take up any more counterspace than most other single air fryers.

Works well, large enough for a family, loud
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was very drawn to the Ninja DoubleStack XL Smart air fryer and it works well, with a few minor drawbacks that keep it from getting 5 stars. First the good. The two biggest reasons I wanted the Ninja air fryer is because of the large size but in a vertical, two drawer configuration. Cooking for a family of 4 with a standard small air fryer isn't practical and the Ninja DoubleStack fits the bill nicely. I also appreciated that the baskets were stacked vertically, as I have limited countertop space. The footprint isn't that large for an air fryer of this size. I have now made three meals with the air fryer. Cooking seems to be consistent with other air fryers. One nice feature is that each basket has a removable wire rack, so it's possible to cook four different foods at the same time. This is where the "smart" feature and temperature probe come in. The two baskets can be set up in such a way so that once the first basket (say with meat) reaches a certain temperature/cook time, the second basket will turn on and cook for the appropriate time so that both baskets finish at the same time. Now for the drawbacks. This air fryer is loud. If you have a small kitchen, don't expect to have a long conversation in the same room. I found the instructions and controls to be confusing. What Ninja should have done is make two sets of complete controls for each basket. Instead Ninja combined certain controls that are common to both baskets, but it's not convenient and confusing to switch back and forth between baskets. This confusion is especially true when it comes to using the smart cooking and thermometer. Finally, if using both baskets at the same time, the cook time is much longer for each. It is still much faster than traditional cooking, but instead of cooking two chicken breasts for 14min in one basket, you can cook four chicken breasts in two baskets for about 25min. It almost doubles the cook time even thought the temperature is the same.

I love this air fryer!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the perfect air fryer. Two drawers means i can cook a whole meal just in this one air fryer. I can cook wings in the bottom drawer and vegetables and potatoes in the top one thanks to the shelf. It also has a space saving design and fits perfectly on my counter tops in a corner. I don't feel the need to find a place to store it after every use because of its slim profile. The Match Cook feature is also a game changer, at least for me, since I can have both the main course and the sides finish at the same time without any juggling and minimal time calculating cook times. Its 8 quart capacity means I can easily feed a family of four and still have leftovers. Its also really easy to clean - I can take the crisper plates out and put them in the dishwasher which is also a huge timesaver. Overall, this has been a huge positive addition to my kitchen, makes it really easy to cook meals for my family, and also clean up fast at the end. Its also fairly light and easy to move, making it easy to put away if I do need to or travel with it.

Tall, dark and handsome
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.WE LOVE THE Ninja Double Stack XL air fryer. This Air fryer is one of the best things we have added to our kitchen in ages. The best part is it does SO much more than just Airfying, it can bake and dehydrate as well. PROS: * TWO baskets you can at different temperatures and different times lengths * the temperature prob is SO easy to use, and will cook your meat to the appropriate doneness. t he sheer size of each basket is magnificent. I can usually heat up 2 pieces of pizza with extra room. * VERY easy to clean * heats up in seconds, no need to pre-heat! Cons: * It's tall, so it wouldn't have fit under my cabinets before we re-did my kitchen. but now it is perfect. * I wish there was a memory feature...I heat a lot of the same things and it would be nice to hit memory and start it automatically. * you have to read the instructions to learn how to use it, for me that is OK, my husband thought it was a con that it wasn't self explanatory straight from the box We highly recommend!

A Massive time saver!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We've had the Ninja Foodi air fryer for years and loved it. However, it was always a pain with a family of four. Even just doing fries, we had to do two batches to have enough. The DoubleStack XL solves that problem! The DoubleStack XL is smaller width wise than our Foodi, which is nice. It is of course a lot taller. As such, we just leave it on the counter as there's no cabinet space big enough to store it. We use it often enough that we just leave it out. Something to note is that the air vents on it are on the right side at the rear. You'll want to have a clear area next to it to not overheat anything. There is a learning curve with this thing. It's not just the simple set a time and temperature like the Foodi, but you can do so much more with it. It's not bad, just different. First, there are obviously two baskets for two different cooking zones. Each basket also has a stack rack, one for each basket to elevate food. This gives you the option to cook four different foods at once (assuming that two and two cook at the same time/temp.). There are six functions with this air fryer. Air fry, air broil, bake, roast, reheat and dehydrate. There is a thermometer which can be used with the bottom basket. Perfect for steak, pork chops or fish to get your perfect doneness. A couple of really great features are Smart Finish and Match Cook. Smart Finish allows you to cook two different things which may have different cook times/temperatures or functions (air fry vs roast for example) at the same time. You set the time, temperature and function of zone one, then zone two. When you press start, the zone with the longest cook time will start. The other zone will hold and wait to start until the end times will match. You could have something in the top basket that takes 30 minutes to cook and something in the bottom basket that takes 15 minutes to cook and they will both finish at the same time. You don't have to try to remember and time it properly, it does it for you. Match Cook allows you to cook more of the same food in both baskets. This is great for us, since we do a lot of fries at once. Now we no longer have to do two batches back to back like we did before. One thing that I haven't figured out is why it takes longer to cook in the DoubleStack than it did in the Foodi. For example, we used to make one pound of fries at 375 degrees for 18 minutes. The double stack is 400 degrees and takes 20-25 minutes for one pound or 35-40 minutes when using both baskets (two pounds). If you do two pounds in both baskets the cooking time is over an hour for fries! The booklet that comes with it has a ton of foods on the air fry cooking chart along with several recipes in the back. Cleanup is simple, you can put the baskets and crisper plates in the dishwasher. Note that they say to extend the life of them they recommend hand washing. It took some getting used to, but overall we love this thing! It makes dinner time so much simpler. Whether you've had an air fryer before, or this is your first one, I highly recommend getting the DoubleStack XL.

All the air fryer goodness, but more of it!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Air fryers are amazing - you can cook nearly anything (well, maybe not soup, but all things solid it seems) in a smaller space and with less energy than a traditional oven. So how do you improve upon that? You fit more air fryer in (about) the same about of space! And that's exactly what this DoubleStack XL air fryer from Ninja does. Each drawer is basically it's own 5 QT air fryer (which is in and of itself LARGE and spacious to hold things like a chicken which is quite popular in all the promo photos) - and within each drawer, you have the ability to put in just one item (on a normal air fryer tray at the bottom) or to "stack" two different items, one on the tray and one on a rack that sits higher up the drawer. Each draw is easily operated independently meaning you can cook up to 4 foods at a give time in this fryer with different settings, times and whatnot per drawer. The food comes out just like you'd expect, the right amount of crispy and juicy without requiring a lot of extra oil and fat! (Well, at least once you figure out the settings, which have taken me a few tries, but it's pretty easy and consistent once you get the hang of it.) But the real magic here is what happens when you can work the two drawers in unison. Of course, you can always use the two drawers independently, and the bottom one has a thermometer to ensure you get to the right temperature, every time (you can automate the cook easily based on the temperature). You can also use the quick "Match Cook" feature to quickly cook double the food (or two meals) in the exact same way - this can also work in conjunction with the thermometer and since the air fryers are VERY consistent, you can put two proteins, one in each drawer, and use the temperature of the bottom item to control both. Even better though is the Smart Finish where the air fryer can be set up to time both drawers to FINISH at the same time so your main course and sides (for example) are ready together. Brilliant! The settings are very easy to use (even for this novice air fryer user) and the whole thing is large, but not over powering even for limited counter spaces. It seems to be well built like it will last a long time and it's also easy to clean - and I would expect nothing less from Ninja, who's been a name in kitchen appliances for a number of years now. So all that said, if you like to cook - or you don't like to cook but you still like to eat - this is the thing to have in your kitchen. It just gives so many fast, great meal options you owe it to yourself to give it a try today!
