Overall Great, Nice Value, But A Couple "Buts..."
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The NIU KQI 300X (“300X”) is a solid 25–37-mile range scooter choice for short commutes on a bike path or quick travel around a college or business campus. Overall, it’s a nice package but it does have a few downsides in my mind, such as the throttle style and behavior, required app to unlock most features, and awkward cornering, which I why I gave it four stars. I’ll discuss in the sections below. ASSEMBLY AND BUILD QUALITY Assembly is a minor, uncomplicated affair. Just mate two cable ends together and secure the 6 supplied screws to the handlebar and frame. Assembled the scooter has a handsome and rugged stance thanks to chunky 10.5” x 2.5” wheels, front hydraulic suspension, and a 6.5” wide footrest/deck. The frame is aluminum with a toughened plastic deck. It’s quite sturdy but with the battery weight, quite heavy at around 50lb. The handlebars can fold and lock down to the frame to be carried but I would not want to be hauling it up and down stairs. Overall, the build quality is terrific, for a “budget” scooter. I feel like it would take a lot of effort and potholes to destroy it. A simple display lays in the center of the cockpit and presents speed, remaining battery, mode and other minor indicators. On the sunniest days I wish the screen was brighter but it’s still usable. The screen is viewable when wearing polarized sunglasses. On the right handle is a thumb operated turn-signal switch and the left side a mechanical bell. A turn signal light is on each side of the handlebar. I’m unimpressed with these because they are small and easily blocked by the user’s body or clothing. The signal’s activation switch is awkwardly placed, especially if you have short thumbs. And if you are wearing padded gloves, there isn’t much tactile feel to them either. The throttle is a half-bar twist type located on the inside of the right grip. I’ll detail my impression of these later, but I’m not a fan. Front and Rear brake levers are fitted in front of the handlebars, left for rear, right for front. The 300x has other safety features. First and foremost, it’s UL listed, something I find reassuring with such a large battery onboard. Grippy disc brakes are on both wheels. No fear going down a 20% grade hill. The rear brakes are regenerative too. Reflectors are on every angle of the frame, and a dual LED light is on the front; a bright outer “daytime running light” and a brighter inner light for night riding. This is one of the few features than does not require the app to engage unless you want to “permanently” disable the daytime light. An always-on illuminating red light is at the rear and becomes brighter when the brakes are engaged. I wish it blinked too. The 300X has a robust IP55 water resistance rating. The battery compartment especially looks well sealed to me. I have no worries if it starts raining or can’t avoid a shallow puddle. This is not to say the 300X should be intentionally ridden in the rain or through a puddle. It’s solid, but it’s not built for those activities and I’m confident the tires could evacuate water of a hard rain. INITIAL THOUGHTS I classify myself as a novice scooter driver. All my experiences are with rentals – Lime, Bird, etc., so that is my perspective in this review. Compared to those I give the edge to the 300X on road feel but to the rentals on stability and maneuverability, perhaps because they are smaller, or I’m not a big person, or maybe I’m use to smaller scooters. An adjustable height handlebar stem would have been nice here. I’m also more comfortable with the thumb-engaged throttle on rentals compared to the half-twist on the 300x. To me the 300X’s throttle is imprecise and lacks a tactile or intuitive feeling to gauge acceleration. Additionally, the handlebars and throttle are very grippy and a few times I accidentally sped up leaning into a curve because my hand was “stuck” to the throttle. User mistake or inexperience, sure, but regardless, that doesn’t happen with a thumb throttle. Most of the 300X’s settings must be configured via the app (iOS-or-Android) rather than on the 300X itself. Personally, I find this a major drawback from both a convenience and safety perspective, and to some extent privacy too. Broadly I’m wary of products where its apps are the only way to access key settings. I have so many now gimped or “bricked” e-waste products because either the manufacturer stopped supporting the app. You can use the 300X in limited fashion without pairing to app, so I tested the 300X both unpaired and paired to the app to experience both situations. The 300x also has no physical ignition key or card, a disappointment to me, and a downside to it. It can be electronically unlocked via the app, something I’m not a fan of for a few reasons. A couple of examples: 1) electronically lock it, say a park 10 miles from home, and in the interim your phone’s battery dies. Now you have no access to your scooter until you either charge your phone or find a willing donor to let you install the NIU app on their phone for this purpose. 2) There is no “share” option in the app similar to what smart locks and smart garages offer where use limitations for a 3rd party can be made without compromising your account. Without either a physical key to give someone or a “share” option you have to really trust someone you are loaning it too. USE AND RIDE EXPERIENCE I took a few spins with 300x before pairing it to experience the scooter’s “no app” capabilities. It’s quite usable this way, but not at its best. Out-of-the-box the 300X is limited to E-Save mode, around 9 mph. Drive it for about 1/10 mile and standard mode becomes available with about 15 mph top speed. This is the approximate max speed available without pairing to the app. I live in a high traffic, narrow sidewalk, limited bike lane & path, urban area, so going faster isn’t practical for me so I’m fine this speed restriction, but I’m sure others will want to unleash full 24 mph only available via the app. App-free start-up goes like this – tap the power button, push off with a foot to get rolling and twist the throttle to accelerate. Launching in E-Save mode is peppy but gentle. It’s for max battery preservation but it’s also serves as a “training wheels” mode too. Start-up from standard mode is more appreciably more aggressive, mimicking a rocket ship, going 0 to 10 almost instantly. Some may appreciate this immediate acceleration, but it was too much for me. I need a few moments after “launch” to get settled before going all-in. I prefer the calm start up E-Save mode offers. This is where the app is required because, unfortunately, that is the only way to configure a relaxed “chill mode” start-up without limiting top available speed. Acceleration is sprightly uphill. A street in my neighborhood has an approximate 20% grade climbing up +/- 500 ft. – quite steep. The 300x never flinched, going 15 mph the entire time. It has a strong motor and ample torque; definitely no wimp and one of its high points. Road feel and handling is good overall. Riding on poor condition asphalt, while noticeable, was not distracting. On well paved streets it was as smooth as I imagine a budget scooter can offer. There is road feel, it’s not a Lexus. I have on issue with the feel as I like some road “connection”. Maneuvering corners, however, felt imbalanced and imprecise compared to my experience with rental scooters. Maybe the 300x’s taller stature or fatter deck vs a rental scooter plays a role here, maybe I just need more practice. I can’t say for sure yet, but it was not a “natural” feel regardless. THE APP: NIU asks for name and email during registration, I thought it would be more. The app collects GPS data, but I don’t know if has access to other personal information tied to my phone. NIU says you can turn off GPS, but I couldn’t locate the switch in my app as shown in either NIU’s online instructions or in my own browsing of the app. It’s possible I overlooked it, and turning off location services via my phone’s settings is an option. All of the 300x’s core functionality is exclusive to the NIU app. Key app offerings: 1. Ride data – routes taken including hill grade % 2. Remaining battery charge 3. Option to require physically pushing off to start the motor and the initial speed (choose between approximately 2mph and 4mph). 4. Adjusting regenerative braking from weak to strong. This affects both the amount of power recaptured and strength of the rear brakes. 5. Adjusting acceleration and speed limits 6. Unlocking the electronic lock – the user can electronically lock the scooter by long pressing the button on the LCD screen. 7. Auto Cruise Control. Most of these are self-explanatory and I’ve discussed a few already. Most important to understand is the app is essential to getting the most satisfying ride out of the 300X, even if not officially required for use. This includes setting start up and max speed, braking power, and enabling theft prevention. Auto cruise control works like this - maintain a constant speed for a few feet and the 300X will lock to it until you either squeeze the brakes or engage the throttle. It’s better than not having cruise control, but I’d prefer a hard button. First, just because one is going at a constant speed doesn’t mean it’s a good time for cruise control. Imagine if your car did this. But, also, because the throttle is finnicky it’s hard to stay at a single speed for long, so engaging auto cruise control is not simple like with a push of a button. BOTTOM LINE The 300X is well built and feature packed for its price tier. The ideal user is probably someone who finds rental scooters too small for comfort, needs good range, and also is accepting that an app is effectively required to get the most out of this model.

Fast, Stable, and Well Built
||Posted . Owned for 5 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The NIU KQi 300X is a solid electric scooter with great performance. It feels very well built, rides smooth, and has plenty of power. The acceleration is strong, and reaching close to the advertised top speed feels easy on flat roads. The long range is a big plus—I don’t have to worry about charging it constantly. I really like the stability and braking. It feels safe and controlled, even at higher speeds, and folding it up is quick and convenient. The design looks clean and premium, and the app integration is a nice bonus. Cons: It’s a bit on the heavier side, so carrying it for long periods isn’t ideal. Also, real-world range depends a lot on speed and rider weight, so don’t always expect the full advertised miles. Overall: A powerful, comfortable, and reliable scooter that’s great for commuting or longer rides. Not the lightest, but the performance and build quality make up for it.

Great Scooter with Some Software Quirks
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’m recommending this scooter, but with a big asterisk: I owned the KQi3 Max before and loved that scooter except for the lack of suspension. I was excited when I saw that this new version looked like a successor with suspension added. Scooter feels great overall. Sturdy, solid, and the suspension helps smooth out the bumps that the KQi3 Max couldn’t. The stem folds really quickly, making it easy to move around and carry up and down stairs. The disc brakes are good (almost too good). For a single motor scooter, this thing packs some power. Maybe a bit much, which leads me to the issues I had with this scooter. The twist throttle is new. Older versions had a thumb throttle, and while they had their issues, I do prefer them over the twist throttle. This is especially troublesome with the high acceleration this scooter has. I ride motorcycles so I’m no stranger to twist throttles, but I still had a problem with holding this throttle at anything other than max. The result? A lot of getting thrown around at mid speed, very scary stuff, even from someone that’s ridden other scooters before. There is a solution to this: By updating the firmware, you can adjust the acceleration in the app for dynamic mode. This is great except it took me connecting to the scooter a dozen times over several days before it randomly finally allowed me to adjust the acceleration as advertised. With the scooter now adjusted to my liking, it’s great! Still not the biggest fan of the twist throttle but I can live with it now that the acceleration is toned down. So that’s it, great scooter, and you get a lot for your money, but you will need to adjust it to suit you with the app, and that is where you might have trouble. If they can fix the app/software issues then I would give this 5 stars and would wholeheartedly recommend this as a mid-tier scooter.

Excellent Multipurpose Scooter
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my first real foray into a modern electric scooter. I used to have a "mid level" design in the early 2000's, but this one is a complete step-up in regards to top speed (24mph), range (up to 37 miles), charging speed (5-6 hours), as well as modern technology integrated into the whole package. The entire experience has been pretty much straight forward, but its not without quirks. ASSEMBLY: Assembly of the scooter is straight forward. I'd say it comes 95% assembled, but you'll have to align the handle bar and torque down the 6 hex screws after removing it from the large box. The scooter itself weighs around 50 pounds, so you may want an extra person to help you lift it upon initial setup. After the handle bar is torqued down via 6 screws on 3 sides, you're going to want to charge it as it comes with about 10-20% of initial charge. I waited around 4-6 hours before really diving into it. FIRST RIDE: After having everything charged and ready to go, I took it outside and really started to get acquainted to the 300x. The Scooter itself comes with a default kick start of around 3 km/h (1.8mph) so you're not going to exactly be able to just twist the throttle and go. This is possible, but it requires customization on the phone app which I'll go into later. Default mode for the scooter is "E-SAVE" which seems to have an 8-9mph limit. This is where my first struggle came to be since the instructions and "changing modes" aren't exactly explained well, but I was able to eventually figure it out after installing the phone app. SECOND RIDE: After installing the phone app, you can get out of E-SAVE mode just by tapping the power center button once.. Not too bad.. Was able to cruise up to its rated top speed of 24mph which surprised me because I gained a little bit of weight and hover around 190 pounds at 6 foot. Breaking was a little scratchy, but the rotors are new and likely need to be broken in. Not too bad. ISSUES: If I have to complain about anything, it's how fast the torque/speed curve is by default. YOU REALLY NEED TO BE CAREFULL AND UNDERSTAND THE LIMITS OF THIS SCOOTER. Again.. I'm not super light, but this will pull you and catch you off guard. IE: The wheel will literally fly up if you crank the throttle a little too much without your full weight on top. I assume this is due to the shift from a thumb to twist design from previous version. Maybe an OTA update can smooth out the curve, but I'm sure this will be the biggest general complaint of the 300X when more reviews start to barrel in. The acceleration can be customized via the app in "Dynamic mode", but your top speed may not reach 24MPH. I personally leave my scooter in default mode and switch between E-SAVE and "unlocked". Scooter defaults to E-SAVE (9MPH limit) upon starting from "off". The second issue I have is that the front turning radius feels a bit narrow, but I'll give NIU the benefit of the doubt as I haven't really rode an e-scooter in years! OTHER FEATURES/APP: There's a pedestrian mode which limits the speed further from E-SAVE. This will govern the scooter to around 3-6MPH. I'll be honest.. I never really used this, but it is a feature. (5 taps on power) -The front light can also be configured to turn on and off from the power button via app (2 taps on power) -Turn signals and break light are straight forward.. No need to configure. double tap to turn off. -The Phone app is pretty typical.. I can't really fault it as everything works for me on iOS side of things. Was able to update the first OTA update before driving the Scooter. -Customization is possible as I mentioned earlier, but it bottlenecks the scooter in other ways. Only thing useful here would be turning off "kick to start".. Which allows the scooter to send power to the wheels without a "push". Not sure if this sucks more battery though.. that's something I need to test long term. OVERALL: I'd say this is a solid "mid" range offering. There are scooters that are much faster, but they're in a completely different ballpark in regards to price and practicality. I generally like what NIU has done here with the 300x, especially since the larger battery allows it to outclass other competitive scooters in pure range purposes. There are quirks, but it also gives the scooter character. Hopefully future OTA updates improve the acceleration/torque curve. Solid 4/5 from me.

Pretty good
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It works well overall and has a ton of power for heavier people, I replaced an older version because I weigh 230lbs and the older version wouldn’t pull me up hills, this one does it with ease. My biggest complaint is the throttle is super touchy, it has Bluetooth settings where you can change that but everytime I do that it defaults back to its factory settings everytime I use it, seems to be a software issue

Noticeably more powerful than my KQi2
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I picked up the NIU KQi 300X mainly for fun and casual riding, and it has been an impressive step up from my NIU KQi2. The acceleration is noticeably quicker, making it feel more responsive and exciting to ride, especially when taking off from a stop. Build quality is another big improvement. The frame feels significantly more solid and stable, which adds a lot of confidence at higher speeds and on rougher pavement. The suspension and larger tires make rides smoother and more comfortable even on uneven surfaces. Battery life has been great for recreational use, and I never feel limited during longer rides. The display is clear, the controls are intuitive, and folding it up for storage is quick and easy. Overall, the KQi 300X feels like a more powerful and refined scooter while still offering excellent value. If you want a fun, well-built scooter that clearly outperforms the KQi2 and similar entry-level models, this is a great choice.

Powerful high end commuter
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great evolution from the KQI3 max I owned prior. Suspension rides nicely and the extra wattage is noticable on hills. That being said the twist throttle is a bit jerky and difficult to modulate smoothly.

First time kick electric scooter
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After riding it a couple of times I’ve fallen in love! Have to ride it a certain way to unlock top speed. When top speed kicks in better hold on! However. Learned from 1rst test drive a full face helmet is a must! Ended up doing a nose dive first time while learning how to ride it. Bicycle half hemet protected my head but not my nose which is healing now from the scars. Realized gloves & knee & elbow pads are essential too since i scarred them up too. Gloves too! Have upgraded my safety gear since then. Now ride without any worries! This thing is so fun!
