Digital code is nearly worthless to me

When it finally went on sale (down to $10) I decided to purchase since it came with digital code. The digital code is only redeemable through Apple. How is a Sony film being sold with a digital code that only works with Apple? For many of you this won't be an issue but for those of you considering purchasing be aware of the limitation.
