A Quieter Norton 360: Good Not Great

I am a member of the Best Buy Tech Insider Network & through this program I am offered a lot of different opportunities to test various equipment & software. I recently was offered a laptop that came with a year of a competing anti-virus/internet security suite that allowed for unlimited devices. However, I am a long time user of the various Norton offered products. I remember in the early 2000s working for a local PC repair shop & Norton was the software that I would recommend as well as sell on a daily basis as well as what I was using on my home systems. Anyone that remembers using anti-virus (AV) or internet security (IS) software from around that timeframe knows that they would annoy you with pop-ups, ads, and reminders multiple times daily about how many days you have left, how many days since your last scan, how awesome they are or even how you should upgrade to their more expensive software and that "you can so no right now for only $49.99!". Oh, the days of the super annoying AV & IS solutions, almost as annoying as the adware & malware it was supposed to block from installing and remove if already installed! Or I'm about to start a Counter-Strike 1.6 (or was it Source at the time? it was one of the two) gaming session with my buddies, we are loading it and boom the AV starts to do it's regularly scheduled scan. You have got to be getting me! Abort! Abort! It is game time AV/IS software! Just LEAVE ME ALONE PLEASE! I am happy to report that those days are a thing of the past! In getting the invite about the Norton 360 for Gamers I immediately noticed the word Gamer and thought "Hey! That's me!" so I was willing to give it a shot...but I had a competitors suite of products already installed on all my machines because I had gotten a year of their product when I got the laptop I reviewed recently, so should I? Yes! I have a history with Norton & it was time to return...and so I did! Install was a breeze, I had to install the competitors software and reboot, then I installed the Norton 360 for Gamers. It was super easy. I previously had a Norton subscription pre-LifeLock being offered with a Norton product. So, I logged into my Norton account & I was greeted with a Dark Web Monitoring report that I needed to review....oh joy. Luckily, it was one I already knew about due to a legit, reputable, popular site that allows you to track your email against known hacks for free. Back on the Norton side of things with the LifeLock report I closed the report & was offered the ability to add more of my info for them to track, so I did. I added my Gamertags (exclusive feature for the Norton 360 for Gamers edition of Norton 360) as well as a lot of other details for them to keep an eye on. Keep in mind that other version of Norton 360 might offer additional/different items to monitor for compared to some of those offered by Norton 360 for Gamers. I have yet to be notified about any additional Dark Web Monitoring reports even though I know for a fact that of ALL the information I entered there is some that is or has been sold or offered for sale (mostly email addresses I entered). How do I know? A doctor I visited was hacked & we were offered 1 year of a monitoring service & so I know exactly what has been released, when, etc. I have yet to definitively find if Norton 360 for Gamers only offers a one time scan or if it will do it periodically. I believe I saw somewhere that it was a 1x thing but now can't find that again. The fact that I, who works with and in technology every single day, can not easily find this information is rather telling as well as frustrating. With the Norton 360 for Gamers AV software the real test comes down to: 1. Does it catch viruses, malware & all the other infectious software that is mean to corrupt or disrupt your system? 2. Does it hurt the performance of your gaming machine? 3. Does it annoy me with dings, pop-up windows, or other such things? I can happily say that the answers to those questions are a yes for question 1 and a definitive no for questions 2 & 3. I could not see or tell any performance hit when using my gaming desktop that is running two Nvidia 1080 Tis in SLI or my gaming laptop that is running a GeForce GTX 1060 Max-Q. I was very pleasantly surprised & extremely happy to see this. Also, the software was almost silent. I was visiting a family member with my laptop & that family member lives out in the middle of nowhere so they have a pretty basic (8 character) password but no need to really change it. There was an instance where the Norton software notified me that the Wi-Fi password was weak. Needed? Yes, for most it probably is; but for that family member no, it is not right now (yes, we could debate this but they are content). However, I will say it didn't notify me after that initial one even though I was there for an extended period of time. No bad at all. Included with Norton 360 for Gamers is also cloud storage & VPN access. I texted both & they performed well. However, I already have a very reliable VPN service that I use as well as lots of cloud services that I use. My mentality is that if 1 backup is good for redundancy then 4 is even better. Thus far I have never been let down nor have I ever lost a file even after I had a HDD completely die recently. So while I appreciate that they included this, I currently have much better options that offer for space (cloud storage) and faster speeds (VPN service). I do commend them for including these 2 as I think more users need to experience both the cloud storage & VPN so that they are more secure with their browsing and their files both. In closing, I want to say that for all the nice things that Norton 360 for Gamers does well, there are more than a few that it does not do so well. I am truly saddened by that. For instance: 1. Gamers version versus the Deluxe version is Deluxe being the same or even Deluxe being just a tad cheaper for 5 devices covered vs. the 3 devices covered as offered on Gamers version-now if we compare Gamers version vs. Premium we see again, about the same cost, maybe Premium is just a tad more than Gamers but we are then offered over 3x the amount of devices covered where Premium allows for 10 device coverage vs. the gamers 3 devices covered. Definitely do some comparing to see which version best fits your needs. 2. The cloud storage is a rather small amount in this day & age but if you have none at all currently it could be a good thing. 3. During my testing the VPN was about 1/4 to 1/3 the speed of my current service that I use. Again, if you do not have any VPN its probably good but not something I'd be willing to do. All in all, I am pretty happy and will keep it installed for the entire license (1 year)

    Excellent Security Software for Gamers

I have been a Norton 360 Deluxe user for about a year now. It has provided effective security and has protected all of devices that it has been installed on from getting any viruses or malware. Norton 360 for Gamers includes all of the features of Norton 360 Deluxe along with the added benefits of gamer tag dark web monitoring and notification optimization to prevent game interruptions. Once that I uninstalled Norton 360 Deluxe and installed Norton 360 for Gamers, I did not notice much of a difference. The interface is identical and the excellent security performance remained the same. There is no slowdown of my computer and PC startup to Windows is fast. I have not noticed any popups or notifications while gaming. It seems to be working properly and performing well. It is considered one of best antivirus products for Windows users. Highly recommended!!

I love to play online games, and really wanted to love this software. I can say i like it, do not love it The download is easy. the setup starts easy. I had to uninstall my malware bytes. The on screen prompts try to get your credit card for year 2 auto renewal (just press the escape key). You can do sooo many things with this antivirus, malware (i think they will remote fix some things), dark web and privacy monitoring, VPN. password manager, cloud backup. Do you REALLY need more cloud backup or another password manager, that you have to pay for? You probably have this for free already. Privacy monitor and dark web monitoring. dark web monitoring i think is good, you can add in your gamer tags, address etc and see if Norton can find you on the dark web. If you are over 25 you probably have had your information compromised and your info is out there, but good to see if its being traded. the privacy monitor will tell you your info is out there, you have to pay to see what it is though. for me these next 2 are the big ones. antivirus and VPN. Norton has one of the best (the best?) antivirus software. The gaming engine keeps the software from eating resources when you are active. take some time and go thru all the settings, its a lot. the VPN. I love running a VPN. I have one running when I boot up my computer and use Nord now. How does Norton compare to Nord? I ran a few tests and used a couple of testing sites and this is the average: speedof.me (download/upload latency) nothing 395.95/52.12 la 16 nordvpn 195.74/17.05 ls 28 norton 225.1/4.22 ls 68 speedtest (download/upload latency) nothing 362.66/191.23 ls 49 nord 334.75/236.18 ls 40 norton 330.36/21.65 ls 49 as you can see there are some big changes from nothing to VPN and between the VPNs. for lag and upload speed Norton is for sure far behind Nord. Take away? use another VPN, accept what Norton does or run without a VPN for some of your games.

I can honestly say that I am now spoiled after having used Norton 360 with Lifelock. The features it has are top tier and of the highest quality. It has your typical virus scan, LifeLock Dark Web Monitoring, Secure VPN, 50GB of cloud backup, a password manager, and a few more. The password manager has gotten me spoiled where I don't need to remember passwords on my PC anymore. This will be one of the reasons I will likely renew the subscription when it expires. The setup was very easy as you download it and run the install. It asks you to uninstall any previous versions if you choose (except Windows Defender). It comes with 3 licenses which is perfect as I have 3 PCs. They are all running the software and are secured. I really enjoy this software and it makes me feel safe and secure on my PCs.

Internet security has never been more important. We rely on our computers/laptops for pretty much everything in life now, so why sacrifice safety? The Norton 360 for Gamers offers SO MUCH protection for my devices. I am happy that I went with Norton 360 for Gamers. One of the most valuable features in the software is the webcam takeover protection. Most of us rely on the little green light on our computer to known when out cameras are being used, but what if that light doesn't come on? The Norton 360 for Gamers webcam takerover immediately informs you when something, or someone, is attempting to access your device's camera. The setup was extremely easy. I just downloaded the software, enter my product code, and everything loaded up quickly and easy. You have the option to setup the protection that you want once it is all uploaded. There is so much protection built into the device. I am confident that Norton 360 for Gamers offers the level of protection that I need. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

We Mac users are used to never getting a virus. This software does more than that for us. it can also monitor the dark web for sensitive data, provide enhanced security and doesn't interfere with any gaming (yes Macs can play quite a few). Highly recommended. Installed on two M1 Macs no issue

I'll be honest up front, I am a fan of these products. They are easy to use and do a great job keeping your system safe. I like that this is billed for gamers and as such only had licenses for a few machines but also works for your tablet or phone. Some people in the past were concerned about performance to your system and having this installed on multiple gaming systems, I can tell you I had no slowness perceived or realized. I would remind folks that this comes with little to no LifeLock functionality other than monitoring of resources in the dark web. This is budget friendly and functional necessity that we all deserve and need at minimum.

i have always enjoyed using norton 360. this is no difference. i just wished they would allow 5 computers and not just limited to 3. i am not sure why its for gamers? seems similar to past norton 360 that i have used. the only issue i had was after i installed. just using the my norton app, it said i had 1 day left for my trial and to click to verify/subscribe etc. i would click that and i kept getting a can not connect to norton server. i had to click on the device security which brought up another app and at the bottom of that had a renew subscription button that i was then able to click that and get my subscription updated to the full version. other then that, works great and as expected.

If you've ever been in an action game and the antivirus suddenly decides to start a scan which drops your frame rate down to nothing, you'll appreciate this product. It's the same good Norton protection, but with an additional feature that senses when you're gaming and refuses to start a scan. The installation was trivial (I was upgrading from another Norton product) and the interface is familiar. If you have ever cursed your antivirus for scanning at the wrong time, this is the product for you!
