Shield

I returned this back to the store
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really don't know why this NVidia player gets so many good reviews. I have 4 Apple TVs, 2 Chromecast, 2 FireTVs and 1 Roku connected to many TVs in our home. I purchased this nVidia streamer only because it came with a Plex server. I was trying Plex for the first time, and it fell way short on my expectations. First problem is that the nVidia streamer requires your local LAN IP address to be in the 192.168.x.x range. Otherwise it does not work for several purposes. I had to dig through onboard forums to understand why Plex was not connecting to my NAS drives. This is a silly requirement, when everything else in our home works great. I reset my LAN to use the 192.168.x.x IP addresses, and hit the second problem of the Plex server on this being glacially slow. I had to sit through several minutes watching a spinning wheel on my TV while Plex was loading a small video file. When the video did come up, the usability is just abysmal, almost impossible to fast forward to specific parts of a video using the nVidia remote. I don't think anyone tested this properly at nVidia. To compare, I have Infuse app on my Apple TVs that works really well with our videos stored on a NAS drive. Infuse is just a joy to experience, even with the comically useless Apple TV remote. Ultimately, I was really happy to just return this lousy nVidia Shield unit back to the store and get my money back.

Don't buy if you dislike ads
||Posted . Owned for 10 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Added ads to the home screen that were not there when I purchased the device. Would not have bought it if I knew they were going to add them.

Nice Device but...
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Heard for years on forums how good this device is and decided to try it out. Seems everything works as a streaming device except for live tv from my plex servers. Tried to get a tv guide and channels set up, but there is nothing in the software to do that. I could watch live tv on HDHomeRun units but that isn't what I bought this for. Had to return.

HDMI CEC does not work, avoid if you need this
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Plagued by CEC issues. Search Google for “Nvidia Shield wakes up randomly”. Make a long story short, Nvidia has a weird way of implementing HDMI CEC that makes it think other devices are waking it up when in fact they are not. This causes the shield to randomly power on all devices throughout the day and night. Nvidia is aware of the problem but refuses to fix it and instead pushes the responsibility onto the TV and AVR manufacturers. Problem is, those guys sell a ton more units than Nvidia does and could care less about Nvidia’s wacky implementation of CEC. Nvidia digs their heels in saying they are doing right and Sony, Samsung, Yamaha, Denon, (insert your major brand) are all doing it wrong and nothing gets fixed. It’s literally a comedy show reading the forums on this issue. Long story short, do not buy if you need HDMI CEC. It just doesn’t work and Nvidia is too concerned about who is doing it right to care about the customer experience.

Update equals ads taking over homescreen
||Posted . Owned for 6 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Android tv update unfortunately crept its way in to this device. Large ads on home screen when there used to be no ads at all. No longer a true premium device. Buyer beware.

Ads kill near perfect device
||Posted . Owned for 6 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ads were recently added to the home page. I spent too much time and money on this solution only for half screen ads to be added.

Poor upscaling, 24fps judder, prime video broken
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The shield doesn't automatically change refresh rate for judder free 24fps playback, though it has a beta feature you can use to match refresh to video framerate it doesn't work in a lot of apps. If your TV doesn't take care of the judder on its own then you're gonna have a bad time. The AI upscaling is completely unnoticeable unless you increase the detail level to max and then it just looks like noise. It's completely useless. The prime video app loses sync between video and audio and the Shield also doesn't support HDR10+ even though Android has already implemented support for it. Also doesn't come with a controller like the previous model.

Sorry I went with NVIDIA
||Posted . Owned for 10 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This used to be the best streaming box available, then came the google update that blasts the home screen with adds. I paid a premium for this box so I wouldn't have to see adds, DO NOT BUY one of these! I would give 0 stars if possible.

Poor Service By Best Buy
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased Home theatre services from Magnolia, a service provided at Best Buy. It has been more than a month. I paid all the money upfront, and I am still waiting on my projector to be installed. I do not understand how Best Buy does business, there is no communication on when this will be installed. This is absurd that you have to wait for so long after the fact that all the payment was taken upfront, Poor service by a company as big as Best Buy not at all happy.

Slow, buggy, and Pulled Features Galore
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Do not but this thing, it’s pretty clear that NVIDIA has no intention of supporting it long term. I brought this primarily for the ability to stream my PC to it via GameStream, only to discover after purchase that the feature had been pulled some months before my purchase. This despite the fact that the feature is still advertised on NVIDIA’s product page. It is also extremely slow, with poor download speeds and video quality. Avoid this product.

Problems with connecting and staying connected
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this unit in June. Two weeks ago, it refused to connect to the internet. It connected to my router but not to the internet. I have two laptops, 2 ipads and a Fire TV, all of which are working fine without any problems. After trying over and over again, I decided to reboot and reinstall from the beginning as a new device. That took care of the problem, but two nights ago the same problem again. Guess what, I have to start over again as a new device to get it resolve again. I am giving it one more chance, if this occur again, I am calling customer service.
