Nvidia Shield pro the best streaming device

Anyone that knows anything about streaming knows the Shield is the box of choice for watching all that good content. Apple or anyone else else can’t touch this device.

Almost the best. But still lacking features.

So, if you want to get the most out of gaming on Android, particularly emulators, without using a much more expensive phone and tethering it to your TV. This is for you. If you want to get the most out of TV entertainment this should give you pause. Sadly. First, nvidia still hasn't officially released proper Atmos support. A format, at first blush, I figured to be fair pointless. Well, it's really not. It truly is the best surround sound format to date. Truly immersive. And this can't do it. Yet. But I still think the wait as we have it now is fairly telling of what kind of support you can expect when it doesn't launch with something that it should have. There have also been a host of Dolby Vision problems and updates to address. They're not entirely Nvidia's problem but paying this much to stream tv and it should just always work or be patched much faster. The second, real big death knell, is that this uses Android TV. Which is basically Google Play with severe limitations, hurdles and headaches for a poorly crafted UI and system that doesn't work pain free like the entire point of making Android TV, in the first place. This isn't Nvidia's problem but Googles. But they chose to use it all the same. So, while some google purchases will transfer just fine you'll be in an interesting situation where some don't. Spectrum TV is a Samsung and Apple TV program only. That's a greedy cable company for you but their regular app won't work, either. Therefore, you have to use your phone to cast to this to technically use this to use a major Cable Provider's app. This highlights the limitations, not freedom, of Android TV. No doubt you'll experience headaches of your very own. I hate Apple TV 4k. I hate its UI. I hate its store. I hate, like REALLY, hate its remote. It's a true PITA to operate and enjoy. I also don't want to give a selfish company like Apple even more ungodly amounts of money. However, it also just works. No Dolby Vision problems. No Dolby Atmos problems. At least none that weren't worked out within a week. There are some headaches with it but most critically every format that you expect to work with it, does and while it's fairly pointless for gaming and they're not doing nearly enough Apple Arcade on it, if you just want to watch the best of the best streaming can provide, it's the ONLY one available so far. So, TL;DR this is good for gaming. Bad for streaming. It's basically 3rd place or fighting for second with Roku. Roku doesn't have Dolby Vision but allows Atmos pass through. This has Dolby Vision (finally) but Atmos is current a hotfix only solution and for m,any even that isn't working. Deal. Breaker. It trades blows with the Roku but the Roku has more apps, works better even if lacking features and costs A LOT LESS. So, by at least losing Dolby Vision (which is ridiculous at this point Roku, PAY THEM ALREADY!) you are still paying a lot less and get a better experience for what should work does work. Nvidia is very vocal in its community forums and very clear with plans and ETAs. However, they are still VERY far behind and they don't patch nearly fast enough. So, if you're willing to wait months to finally get what you paid for, and probably wait months later after they break something (either on them or an update from your TV/Receiver company) then I am sure Nvidia will deliver. Definitely more than Apple on the smaller issues affecting fewer customers. But for the big things, they're taking way, way, way too long. This doesn't work as promised. Apple TV 4k, sadly does.

    Overrated and disappointed.

Extremely Overrated. The only redeeming qualities are how fast menu navigation feels, and AI upscaling. They removed local gamestreaming which basically knocked this down to a media only device. Of which there are plenty of cheaper options. I have constant issues with apps crashing. I tried to download an app and it took me three attempts before I even made it far enough to finish typing in the search box, because every time it would crash back to the home screen and I’d have to reopen the play store. I have it connected to a 5GHz channel, but it constantly disconnects and is extremely slow. The 2.4GHz works better, but not great. I also have bad latency and disconnect issues with bluetooth on my xbox series gamepads, my dualsense, my ds4, and my nintendo pro gamepad. I’ve come to believe the wireless card as a whole is just garbage in this thing. It’s a shame a media box with such good speed and potential is limited to broken software and mediocrity. Save your money and buy a roku or fire stick 4k or something. There’s nothing exceptional here.

Only device that supports Dolby TrueHD Atmos

I was shocked to discover that even though Apple TV 4K claims Dolby Atmos support it can’t decode the Atmos track on Bluray rips (a lot of people rip their Blurays to their NAS servers). This is because the Atmos track is embedded as part of Dolby TrueHD and Apple only supports Atmos from streamibg sources such as Netflix and Apple TV+. These are compressed tracks that are not nearly as good as uncompressed bluray audio. Get the pro version of the Shield to avoid buffering issues.

Have 3 of these in my house that have replaced Rokus, Google Chromecast and Amazon Fire sticks. They are responsive, have a lot of features, and are quite powerful for a set top box. Nvidia maintains the software and adds additional features. Highly recommend if you want a strong set top box!

Outstanding device. We have two of them, bought them both from Best Buy a couple of years apart. Makes bringing all of our media files together in one place making it easy to access any movie, music, pictures or streaming apps at any time. Great quality output.
