I think the nvidia shield tv pro is by far the best streaming device out there. I own this and apple tv 4k plus a roku ultra. All are great but the nvidia is so much faster.

Best media player on the market

If you are looking for the best media player on the market, then look no further than the Nvidia Shield Pro. This media player pretty much checks every box from hardware to software. Two usb 3.0 ports that supported additional storage and several game controllers I had at my disposal and a gigabit ethernet cable which ran at the highest speed my connection allowed is already off to a good start but it doesn't stop there. The shield supports all the major streaming apps(netflix, hulu, and amazon) but this is not why you want an Nvidia shield so let's move on to the personal media. Using Kodi, a media player app, I was able to run DVD iso with the mpeg 2 codec and there were no visible loading times present. Next up, I tested Blu-ray rips with the mkv format using the H264 codec and the vc-1 codec and both ran with no issues. Of course the big test was 4K Ultra HD's using mkv format with H265(HEVC) and..you guessed it, playback is not an issue. Tie that into both DTS and Dolby support and top that off with a 4K ai upscaler that does an amazing job and you have the media player of your dreams. Even gaming is quite phenomenal on this hardware. The nvidia shield can emulate up to the 7th generation of games though you will find that performance struggles in games of the later generations. With that being said the shield still does a better job the any other media player I've tested. They also have the Geforce now streaming service which will let you play current gen games at 1080p 60fps depending on your internet connection. Though there were some frame timing issues and pretty noticeable lag the experience was far better than I expected. Overall the Nvidia shield is an amazing piece of hardware and no other media player I've tested has come close to what it offers. It may take years before we see another media player really contend with the shields accessibility so if you have the money to pick one up I suggest you do.

If you are serious about your entertainment center, this is the #1 choice currently. I am using this with a BenqTK800M projector and I am very happy with it. The AI up-scaling still shocks me every time I watch a lower quality film. There is not a single file this shield cannot direct play over my network. They also hit a home run with the remote. Feels great in your hand with gentle backlighting when it senses movement. Really feels premium. This is the one to buy, if it's not sold out.

The actual device's functionality is strong. It can stream basically anything. It can also act as a limited Android gaming platform. The UI is a bit lackluster and can be difficult to navigate.

FIRST: BE SURE to accept the update to 8.1.1 if it's offered. It solves the color space switching problems in 8.1.0. Drove me crazy until I figured it out. Works well. Fast, responsive UI (a surprise considering it's the sluggish Android TV system). Not a lot of preloaded garbage, and it can be removed from the Home page because it allows for customization of the Home page. Supports all known video and audio formats currently being streamed, up to and including DolbyVision and Atmos audio if the streaming service is sending it. Just started playing with the built-in Plex Server, a nice bonus. Unlike the AppleTV4K, handles Netflix's 24.0 frame movies correctly. I own both the ATV4K and this. The remote could use a few more buttons - a few programmable buttons would be great. And it does have that weird 'rounded' Toblerone Chocolate shape - you have to hold it, you can't normally just lay it on a surface and push the buttons because there is no 'top' side. All the apps for it come from the Google Play Store. The CBS All Access app will only do stereo audio, and demonstrates the Android TV "one-size-fits-all" sloppy app model's weakness. The CBS AA app on the ATV4K does 5.1 DD audio. Besides CBS AA, I run Netflix, Amazon, Disney+ on it, and they all work really, really well. The audio output level is somewhat lower than my other sources. I really wanted to give this 4.5 stars, but that wasn't available, so I went with 5. So far, I'm pleased with it.

An excellent product, but for the price it should have more memory and the latest processor. This is the best implementation of Android TV out there and it should be for the price! This unit isn't cheap, and I don't know if it outshines the budget minded units out there that are typically half the price. The biggest plus is Nvidia is the company backing it up. The budget models are built by companies you have never heard of, and can't find when you need support!! So I guess in the end, the quality comes at a cost.

Reviewing this after 9 months of daily use. We have a 4k projector for a TV (Optoma UHD30), so using this for the upscalling on a 120" screen was the big selling point. 4k upscaling likely doesnt matter as much on a smaller panel TV under 70" but in large format you can tell the difference. Interface is top notch, remote feels good, and Nvidia seems to keep ontop of the update game. If you have a projector, its a no brainer, just do it.

The NVIDIA Shield Pro is the best streaming device you can get right now. Not only does it support all the popular streaming apps but it is the best Plex media player as well. I am able to encode my media content in the highest quality available (H.265, 4K, Dolby Vision/HDR, Dolby Atmos, and Subtitles) and it plays it with no issues whatsoever. I tired to use many other streaming devices such as Xbox Series X, Playstation 5, Amazon Fire TV 4K, Chromecast with Google TV and none of them were able to play my content without either transcoding the content to a compatible format with that device or down scaling the original source so that it was compatible with the specs of that specific hardware. I wish NVIDIA would release a new model though as the current model released in 2019 and definitely needs a refresh. There are newer codecs available now such as H.266 (VCC) and AV1 which are the successors to H.265 and VP9 video codecs. These formats are designed for ultra-high-resolution video content, including 4K, 8K, HDR, and 360-degree video material. If NVIDIA were to add these codecs, it would top itself and cement its lead in the streaming device category.

I was looking for something with the functionality of my old school media center PC that I built back in the day, in that it gave upload options with onboard storage and flexible application options and this fit the bill! Just about every popular streaming option available, the AI Upscaling is impressive and the firmware (OS) gave me lots of customization options to tweak the settings to my liking. Its an investment but its also something that will provide a lot of bang for the buck!
