I've switch from the FireTv to the shield. It is very responsive, updates are current. Able to sideload if needed. The unit is really small and Blessings to be hidden if you didn't want it to show. Only downfall is the loss of the micro SD for expandable storage. However a USB will work just fine but if you connect to USB them the connection is a little tight on the back. For games you need an account. He's are fast.

    Best Streaming Box to Date

The Nvidia Shield has been the best streaming box for several years. Although it was first released several years ago, it still receives frequent updates. The performance still keeps up to this day. Game streaming works well. Highly recommend.

Ditched cable and snagged this with my first months savings. I have had this for over a year and I am still amazed. I can play retro games up to current pic titles. Streaming apps galore and also use it to view and record my security cameras. By far the best investment in home entertainment I have ever made. Only down is the small remote is buggy and always lost.

If you want something simple to play YouTube or Netflix this isn't for.there's a lot of cheaper options for that but if you want a media streamer of the future in your home this is for you nothing at this price range comes close to half the capabilities of this little box NOTHING!do you have the casual games movies Kodi and the power of the PC when you need it (games wise)

Good product ruined by horrible remote

The shield itself is pretty good. Has a good selection of apps and complements a 4k tv pretty well. the UI is mediocre but not too terrible. My main issue is with the remote. My experience has been completely ruined by the included remote. The lag is unreasonable. It goes into some sleep mode or something and ignores all the button presses for like 5 seconds before registering all of them at once. The mic on the remote is also atrocious. It fails to pick up any of commands. The update to Shield experience 6.0 has also been useless. The remote can't register a single command correctly. It's beyond frustrating. I'll mostly sell the shield and move to apple tv if this isn't fixed soon.

NVIDIA Support will let you down !

I purchased the NVIDIA PRO version (i.e. with internal 500Gb instead of 16Gb) of this product about 5 months ago. It is indeed a very powerful streaming/gaming device and everything will go well till you get your first mandatory software (called shield-experience) update. My device was working properly till Shield-Experience (SE) update 7.2, that was released 2 weeks ago. The update is full of bugs affecting thousands shield owners world-wide (just check the GeForce forums). I'm one the victims: my Nvidia Shield PRO does not boot any more, it is broken after the update 7.2. I contacted Nvidia support to solve the problem. In the beginning they instruct me on how to factory-reset the device (and erase all my data !) but it didn't work. My device was totally bricked !!! Next step they offered to replace the broken Nvidia SATv by a new one, and in principle I was happy with that solution: What a disappointment: instead of sending a brand-new replacement device, I got a shabby refurbished Nvidia SATv full of scratches and clearly misused by the previous owner. I bought the most expensive edition of the Nvidia SATv PRO device, and kept it in pristine conditions. The device is broken because of Nvidia's careless software-release methodology. Please send me a brand-new device. It is just not fair that I get stuck with a refurbished subpar device I'm very disappointed with Nvidia Support.

Powers on quick, has all the features to support my Vizio 4k 120Hz Television. Google should bring all android apps to the Andriod TV as well. Only few limited apps available from the store.

    Adoptable storage woes

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This Shield TV is a nice product overall. I do have the occasional remote hiccup and I'm unable to format any USB drive for adoptable storage. Not sure if it's a software issue or hardware problem. I'll most likely return this unit for a pro model. This way, I won't have to worry about running out of storage. I have a ticket in with Nvidia, but so far, they haven't been helpful. As long as my issue is an isolated incident, I can recommend this product.

Fatal flaw for expensive device = returned

I've been a Roku owner a long time, and was an early adopter of the Boxee box years ago, and I am no stranger to tech, including Android. I bought the Nvidia Shield hoping for an awesome Android TV experience. Instead I was severely disappointed. The selection of "apps" is extremely limited, missing a number of what you might call second-tier things like "The CW". The screen layout is very poor for browsing through installed apps. But worst of all, the remote is practically unusable - I think it uses a Bluetooth implementation that is very buggy. It lags so hard you will think the box has frozen, and then suddenly catches up and executes your last 5 or 10 button presses. Google it, you'll find a ton of people having this issue, it isn't just me and it isn't fixed (yes I performed all available updates to the device and remote). A few hours into it I decided - $200 is too much to spend on something that doesn't work well out of the box

    Better than Fire TV

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Just replaced the first gen Amazon Fire TV with the NVIDIA Shield. I wish I had done this sooner! Easy setup and works great with Prime, You Tube, Pandora and Spotify. Both my TIVO Premiere XL and the Fire TV have buffering and connection challenges with Prime movies. I have not experienced buffering issues so far. I love the auto-off and the Dolby pass through. I can only hope my initial impression is a good indicator of future performance. Buying via Best Buy online and picking it up at the store was a breeze.

    Best companion for tv

I've been using this non-stop since it came out years ago. Nvidia still releases updates for it. I use it to watch netflix, ps vue, prime video, and YouTube. I have various emulators and roms, allowing me to play many classic games. I also use the game streaming capabilities, which work great if on a 5ghz wireless or hard wired. It outputs 4k and hdr, and the funny thing was that it didn't do either at release. Both were from software updates from Nvidia! My newer TV I bought a few years ago also had integrated Android TV, and I tried that version for a few months before switching back to the Shield because it was a better experience. The TV just needs to display picture, let the other hardware worry about everything else. Highly recommend this.

    Hard to Figure Out

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I cannot comment on how well this performs yet, as I only opened it a couple hours ago, and I am still trying to figure it out. I am a college graduate w/ reasonable tech skills, but this is way different than anything I have used. Be prepared for a lengthy learning process. Mine comes w/ 2 remotes, neither of which has a keyboard. The remotes do not contain elementary buttons found on most others, likely b/c you are supposed to use voice. Voice works, but it doesn't come w/ a list of the commands, so be prepared for lengthy trial and error of guessing what commands might work. I had a Fire Stick before, and had zero problems operating out of the box in minutes. This darn thing keeps playing music I hate and I can't get it to exit, just pause (and then keeps starting up again). This should not be that hard to operate the basic menu. Oh, don't expect instructions either. Just a diagram on hooking it up, which is self-evident. So far, I hate this box. I love technology, and am surprised that this did not have cautions about difficulty to operate. DO NOT buy this if you are not a tech genius, or have the patience to spend hours figuring it out. Maybe my opinion will improve, and the hardware may be great, but the interface is the worst thing I have ever encountered.

    Disappointing for Plex

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this specifically to use as a Plex client since I read that it supports so many video codecs and would allow for direct playing my movies. While it does that, the user interface for the Plex app (including the Plex for Kodi add-on) is sorely lacking compared to the Plex app on my Sharp Roku TV. So I'm returning the Shield and will continue to use the Plex app on my Roku TV (and thankfully have a fast enough processor on my Plex Media Server to handle the transcoding so far). I'm definitely not a gamer, so see all the other reviews for that. I'm guessing folks who like the Shield for Plex have not used the Roku app--I find it SO much cleaner and user-friendly compared to the Shield. Very disappointing.

Its Android and u can setup Kodi which gives u access to lot of content. The game play is good when u compared to other devices such as XBox or PlayStation at the price and u have access to google play store so u have a lot of choices. I think the price can be reduced further to compete with other devices such as Amazon Fire UHD TV.

No Dolby Digital when connected to Samsung TV

Much like Nvidia video cards for computers, this device will only output DD or DTS when hooked directly to a compatible reciever. It does do a great job at what is designed to do otherwise. Built in Chromecast works great for true (non-upscaled) 4k content. Make sure you have a spare HDMI cable, as they don't include one.
